2023 Free Agency Thread

Sounds like Bates' situation.
Had an offer and thought he was worth more.
Difference obviously being that Bates wasn't a free agent.

We could have gotten in on that one year deal, but if we weren't paying Bates that kind of coin, we aren't paying someone else outside the organization that coin either.

God-El gets in on the action.

Roger Goodell and NFL owners are expected to finalize a multi-year contract extension for the commissioner at next week's owners meetings in Phoenix, league sources told ESPN.

The NFL's compensation committee is slated to present the proposed extension to team owners during a special privileged session Tuesday afternoon. Only one member from each team is permitted in that meeting.

Goodell's extension has been in the works since last season, when the compensation committee was granted permission by the full membership to get an extension done, according to sources. The sides have discussed a three-year extension, according to sources, but no length of time has been agreed to yet.

The NFL has declined to comment.

The economic framework of Goodell's new deal is not known but is expected to be incentive-laden and, considering the league's financial success, the most lucrative deal ever given to any commissioner in any sport.

Moreau is supposedly on his 2nd visit to the Nati.    Hopefully something gets done.    He had a nice TD catch over Wilson the last time they played in Vegas.   Didn't have any catches in the Wild Card game.

I would have rather had Hurst but I could see him making plays on this team.    I don't think it would close the door on other TEs either.

Would like it more if it is multi year deal.

Post Free Agent period power rankings still have Bengals checking in at 3.   Below Chiefs and Eagles and above the Bills.

Personally,  I think the Chiefs have not had a kind off season.   Don't expect them to fall of the map but in terms of No. 1 seed the Broncos have gotten better on paper.   The Chiefs have had some key pieces leave.    Hopefully they won't have the cake walk in the division.

Buffalo seems parked in neutral.   Jets, Miami, Pats have all made up ground.

The competition level in the North is tied up in Lamar Jackson drama.  I think the Browns will be the media fun 2nd choice to surprise to win the North.

The South - I'm not sure any team in that spot can compete for the No. 1 seed.  Maybe a second team sneaks up into the WC.

Well when looking at both Hurst's and Moreau's stats from last season, they are fairly close.

Hurst- 52 catches on 68 targets, 414 yards and 2 TD's, 26 first down catches, 8 yards per catch

Moreau- 33 catches on 54 targets, 420 yards and 2 TD's, 24 first down catches, 13 yards per catch

Looking at that alone, it's not hard to see Moreau have the same impact that Hurst had in 2022.
However, and this is big, he was the worst blocking TE in the league last year.

My bad, I didn't give the perspective from run blocking vs. pass blocking.
Duh, that's kind of important.  Last in run blocking...

Here, read for yourself:

Quote

Moreau endured a miserable season as a run blocker, with his 40.8 run-blocking grade placing dead last out of 23 tight ends who had at least 300 run-blocking snaps in 2022. His 2.8% positive run-block rate ranked last, and his 22.1% negative run-block rate was the second worst among his peers.

That being said, he finished last season ranked 12th at the position with a 69.7 receiving grade and was the only tight end to log at least 40 pass-blocking snaps (63) and not surrender a single pressure. Moreau ranked first by converting 70.6% of his catches into either a first down or a touchdown, and 35.3% of his catches were explosive plays that went for at least 15 yards, the third-best rate among tight ends in 2022.

That’s because he was a massive bust. Here’s a recap of his time in Buffalo. He makes Carmen look like a good choice.

I guess we will see if a change of scenery and OL schemes is good for him or not.

The contract makes it a zero risk proposition - no dead money if he gets cut

My best guess is that Pollack must have seen something he liked

I didn't watch the video, but is his off-field baggage anywhere near as bad as Carman's?  I think his main issue was (or is)  staying healthy.

Army: I decided not to make a joke linking "Jenny" with Carman.  Not going there.

I'd refer a TE that can block, but would still welcome Moreau gladly. The importance of receiver capacity well outweighs the importance of blocking at that position anymore. Scheme it up, boys.

Yeah, I give zero shits about run blocking at TE. Pass protection, yes, and it appears he is fine there. I just want someone signed before the draft so they have options.

Haven't heard anything about his asking price.  Maybe that is the hang up ??

The TE market is utterly dead (I mean Schultz ended up taking a one year deal with Houston, I believe) so I’m sure that’s part of the problem.

So…if the reports of Lamar wanting a fully guaranteed deal were ever true, they apparently are not any more. From CBS:

Quote

Jackson is not hellbent on receiving a fully guaranteed contract, according to the report, but he is pursuing a highly lucrative multiyear deal that would be in the neighborhood of at least $200 million.

Also, a (checks calendar) week after FA opened, Lamar has decided it’s time to begin:

contacting teams in an effort to create a possible landing spot

Fast off the mark, I see. Also also, it’s not Lamar himself reaching out but a “representative.” So he doesn’t have an agent except maybe he sort of does now? The pft story linked says he’s now repped by someone “not certified by the NFLPA.” Also that the $200m number may be his guarantee demand, with more unguaranteed coin beyond. Anyhow, maybe we will see some movement here, our maybe not, who knows.
