Round 1 (18): Amarius Mims, OT, Georgia

Recommended Posts

Bottomline is this.    Bengals since Alexander have been dreadful in developing their drafted linemen.

The retention of Ford and drafting of Mims probably leads to the departure of 2 drafted OL.  Smith and Carman.

So what?

Jonah Williams - 5 star, 1 rated tackle out of highschool.  Micheal Jordan 4 star top 10 offensive tackle out of highschool. Billy Price - started a freshman (red shirt) on a national champ team.  Jackson Carman 5 stars, rated no. 2 tackle in his class over Sewell.

The overall point is these guys are going to hit top shelf in every t-shirt and underwear measurement.   Since Alexander the Bengals can't get any of them to start aside from Jonah Williams.

Mims another 5 star, 2nd rated highschool tackle.  I hate to sit here 2 years from now calling him a "bitch" because some dumbass coach can't figure out a way to get bona fide studs to be productive.

That is just a line of failure.   How many former 5 star players does Pollack need to draft in order to keep from giving up 35 sacks on a season?

Yes Army.

Love the measurables that were taken

but thats about all he has going for him, imo, but also please note the most important OL measurements were not taken at all....short area quicks

related aside: I'd like to them stop recording 40 times for OL.  I mean, long runs by OLs are virtually nonexistent.  I want to know how long it takes for the OL to get to the other side of the telephone booth, not the other side of the field

He didn’t do them because he tweaked a hammy running the 40. He had a private workout for teams to make them up a couple weeks ago. We may not have them but the Bengals do.

Another reason I shared the RAS on Mims, after I saw it, was the fact that not only have the Bengals not developed OT's throughout their history, they have not specifically drafted very athletic OT's either.

When looking, the highest RAS score for a drafted OT was 9.15, with an average of 6.34. That's shit.
Mims now represents the most athletically gifted OT ever drafted by the Bengals in the history of the team.

People can compare him to Ogbuehi, but that's not a fair comparison either.  Ogbuehi wasn't nearly the athlete Mims is and was a much older prospect when the Bengals drafted him.  Mims is a MUCH better prospect by a long shot.

I get the injury aspect and the lack of experience, but people also forget that Munoz only had 5 more starts, only playing 1 full season at USC in 4 and literally had 3 different season ending ACL injuries (2 in the right and 1 in the left).  Am I suggesting Mims is going to be the next Munoz?  Of course not.

The Bengals have already noted they had him ranked higher than other defensive players and OT's that were still on the board.  Fans don't have to like that fact, but the coaches have earned the benefit of the doubt.

There, that was more trying to convince.  LOL...

some Georgia bulldog fans seem to be in agreement Mims kinda took himself out of the SEC Championship game instead of it truly being injured.

they are saying Kirby post game said he was cleared to play but he didn't feel like he could continue.   some think he was dodging the issue.

The only person I saw comment about Mims "Taking himself out of the game" was Nick Sabin.
Not sure why he would be commenting on that, seeing as how he was not his coach, but ok.
I think that's a bit overblown on his part, but he's an ANALyst now, so whatever get clicks and people listening.

I think the fanbase is largely traumatized by the Ogbuehi/Fisher incident (and even Jonah's rookie injury).

At the very least, Mims is a better athlete than anyone the Bengals have drafted on the OL in recent memory. Ogbuehi had decent athleticism too, but he still wasn't in Mims' zip code. Mims is a body composition freak.

I like the Mims pick my only concern is the health issue. If he stays healthy I really think they have a shot at a franchise tackle. For me only two things are concerning his health of course, and second can Pollack get the most out of him. I don’t have much faith in Pollack, but I think Mims will be just fine.

Cedric had a 4th round grade by some people coming out in the draft that year, Mims some are saying could be the best tackle taken. So it’s a wait and see if you ask me, I’m not going to crown him anything or will I put him down before he steps on the field.

Same.  I am thrilled with the risk/reward ratio with this kid.  True, he could bust.  He could also be another Whit.  I love this pick and no matter how much you, TJ, try to rain on my parade, I refuse to be swayed.  Putting on all my Up With People records right now.

I get that if Oogie had not had his health issues - health issues that in turn left him highly inexperienced, since he missed a lot of game snaps due to injury - he'd probably have gone in the top 10

Believe me, I get it

However, I cant turn away from the lack of experience and lack of durability.

I just can't

its there.  Its real.

Same as with the original Oogie a decade or so ago, I still hope and pray he is a good player.  I'd like to see the ORT spot nailed down for 10 years or more

It could indeed happen

but

I think the opposite is much more likely to be the actual outcome

also -- if they wanted a highly talented and athletic OT with durability issues, they had that guy here for a FA visit and sent him on his way.

The funny thing is that the “injury issue” is mostly an illusion. Mims hurt his ankle, had tightrope surgery to fix it and then a hammy pull at the combine. But if you look at other players who had the same treatment, pulling a hammy within a few months after this type of procedure is common. Zach Moss is just one example. Mims will be fine.

IN YOUR FACE TJ!!! You can read it right there in black and white, Mims will be fine.  Go enjoy a 740 calorie Half Pound Beef & Cheddar at your local Arby’s drive through but don’t be surprised if the teenagers that work there taunt you for your hatred of Amarius Mims.

I am not sure my local Arbys (which is also Army's local Arby's, btw) has a half pound anything

Is this a new offering of theirs?

Can I get potato cakes with it?  and a cherry turnover?

Ive been trying to make it clear that I hope Mims becomes a superstar.  I absolutely desire (much) better protection for New Guy.

Dude, the half pound beef and cheddar is like eleven bucks at the Heath Arby’s drive thru.  Served by zit covered teenagers who truly cannot hide their disdain for me, if they’re even trying to do so.

Unless Trent Brown shows up completely out of shape, injured, or disinterested I don't see him being cut.   His Patriots days have him a lock down pass protector and that's something Burrow has never had with any starting tackle.

Still give this pick a C.   I hate seeing Boom or Bust next to a 1st rounder of the Bengals.
