HoosierCat
And awaaaaay we go! Quote If the Bengals decide to give him a franchise tag, the two sides will have until July to reach a long-term agreement before the tag turns into a one-year deal. Green said that if Cincinnati uses the tag, he will not participate in offseason workouts. "I understand the business part of this," Green said. "I understand, if they franchise tag me, I can't put myself in that situation to be there." While Green said he wants to remain in Cincinnati, he is mindful of the business aspect for both sides. The receiver referenced the Colts' decision to release quarterback Peyton Manning while noting that anybody is replaceable. "They can franchise me and I can be here for another year, or we get a deal done, or we don't get a deal done," Green said. "I'm prepared for anything." https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/28328270/as-franchise-tag-hovers-aj-green-fears-lack-commitment-bengals

AMPHAR
Unfortunately for AJ. The tag is what is best for the Bengals. So you are going to sit out when you can’t even practice? What’s the difference? Hope he isn’t getting bad advice that cost him more money. Shouldn’t be talking when he just had to see a foot specialist and hasn’t played since November 2018. ShulaSteakhouse
Time to move on from AJ. They probably won't, because they're the Bengals, but he's an injury waiting to happen at this point in his career, isn't worth the long-term investment at this point, and they need to restock/rebuild, not tie-up a bunch of cap space on a 30+ yr old WR who's missing an increasing amount of games as time goes on. Add WR to the list of positions they desperately need to upgrade/add quality depth to.

I don't know why he expects anyone to give him a long term deal right now. Tagging him would be the only thing I'd do if I were the Bengals, until he can show he can get through a season without the foot/ankle issues cropping-up again. Otherwise I'd let him walk and move on.
COB
Holy shit. Now we’re getting somewhere. AJ is looking out for himself, can hardly blame him. Give me a long term deal or let me walk. Best scenario, we do a sign and trade. Also, best scenario, Kathryn Webb McCarron comes over to my house and volunteers to be my new girlfriend. That trade deadline the front office ignored is starting to loom large. The impact they could have made on next year’s roster was frittered away, but it could have been significant. AJ visited the foot specialist on his own, then announced he wasn’t going to be well enough to play. Then in a few days he announces I won’t be happy, and I won’t be participating in OTAs if you tag me. There is an implied threat there. That foot specialist is a sword and a shield. He might not play much under the tag, the FO better understand that. AJ doesn’t have it in him to be confrontational and demanding. He’s a low key, subtle, dude. He’s conveying a message as best he can. The Brown Family is probably too stupid, or too stubborn, to listen.
Passepartout
Yeah as really A.J. is pretty low key but does not complain out loud. In an organization gone haywire!

He admitted he had a set back when he was cleared to practice by rushing it. He wouldn’t have passed another team’s physical or workouts. AJ has 0 leverage. volcom69
Who know who, or what to believe anymore. All I know is this org is such a mess, and it’s even worse now since they hired new coaches. At this point I don’t even care anymore no matter what happens it won’t be right. AMPHAR
I don't get the drama on this. Tag him and move on. You could also do a 2/3 year deal by beating the first year Tag payment and in return get the 2nd/3rd years at the lower rate. Either way. You don't let AJ walk into the market unrestricted. If he sits out mandatory stuff then that's only hurting his value and I hope he isn't getting bad advice because if he's passing on $18m in the up and coming year he's never going to recoup that at his age and sitting out missing effectively 2 years. membengal
If he doesn't participate in OTAs...so what? If he skips training camp...good. I don't see any of that as being bad, frankly. If he is tagged and plays week 1 next year, fine. I really don't see the drama. If he is tagged and holds out...fine? They went 1-15 or 2-14 (or god forbid 3-13) this year without him, so it's not like his holding out will threaten them with bad things. We are already suffering those bad things without him. I just don't see the drama here.

It’s just interesting to me that he came out and said it. To me that’s a signal that they aren’t close to any deal. The biggest questions I have are, one do they use the franchise tag? They haven’t used it since 2013 despite ample opportunity to do so. And if not do they use the transition tag? They get one of each next year since it’s the final year of the CBA. As far as resigning him long term...might as well. They have $50 million+ in cap space and that’s before trading or releasing Dalton. If they don’t they’ll just end up spending the money on three or four guys who have no chance of making a difference.
COB
I would need some convincing evidence regarding that foot before I’d give him 4 years, which is the minimum he’s going to want.

ShulaSteakhouse
He's played in like 9 of the last 32 games, is 32 years old. I wouldl let him walk if there's legit fear of a chronic issue. I don't care about any drama, I just don't understand why he thinks he's entitled to another long-term deal at this point?
COB
TJ and Stripes: Gutters are designed to collect rainwater from the roof and carry it away from the foundation of the home through downspouts. ... COB
Mike is a complete idiot. He’s fucked this franchise up for decades. That won’t change. He very likely envisions AJ being inducted into the HOF as a Bengal. My prediction - they sign him, he’s still great when healthy, but misses as many games as he plays over a 4 year mega deal. The right move? As Hokie said, tag him and trade him. Sounds like a lot of work though.

membengal
I mean , maybe? They already pay a fuckton to Julio on the new contract - could that tie up $50 million of their cap next year in WR? if green makes it to free agency - he’s gonna be somewhere other than Atlanta.
