HoosierCat
And welcome to the final game of the preseason, aka the Scrub Bowl. I don't anticipate much interest, but here's a thread anyhow.
ArmyBengal
I’m headed down to watch the backups and enjoy and evening hanging out at the stadium. Should be a nice night for football. Hoping for nothing more than no injuries. Go Bengals !!
Stripes
I'm hearing we might see starting candidates at corner tonight, which makes sense (at least for a final resolution of Dax vs. Turner).
AMPHAR
I believe Colts are playing starters. The best match up and I hope I can see it is Latu vs. Kirkland. Latu has a ton of hype. Kirkland probably is the 4th tackle on the roster. It'd be nice for him to win that battle.
ArmyBengal
Yeah I want to see how our backups fare against their starters. Certainly worth checking out the game for that reason. Hoping to see the alphabet linebacker, Njongmeta get more snaps tonight.
volcom69
Turned it on to see battle get a pick 6 so that was cool.
volcom69
So curious I’m guessing Zach Moss is practicing correct? The first preseason game he was sick and then I have heard nothing from him. So guess he is good to go?
volcom69
Eric All looking nice out there.
HoosierCat
Your guess is as good as mine.
volcom69
Lol guess you have not heard much about Moss then either. Man I worry about this run game, and we hear nothing about it ugh!
volcom69
Ok Burton needs to play and play a lot that guy can play
COB
Burton just needs to get in his playbook, per Burrow.
volcom69
Burton with yet another TD this preseason, ok I really hope he has done enough to play a ton this season.
ArmyBengal
Score aside, I thought the backups did better than I thought they would against the Colts starters. Anthony Richardson looked like crap for them. Outside of that, I still enjoy seeing the young players getting snaps. Burton is going to play a part in this offense. If not this season, certainly in the coming years. Very vanilla offense and defense which is what you expect in preseason game 3. Not much to hang your hat on and not much to get upset about. It was perfect football weather and we had a good time hanging out at the stadium for the evening. Armybengal Jr. is a senior this year and the high school has their first game tomorrow night. Next Saturday we wilL be up in Columbus for the Buckeyes season opener against Mother Mary of the Blind I believe…
AMPHAR
I do not see a big role for Burton in the first half of the season as a pass catcher without injury. If he can get active on game day due to returning that would help his cause.
volcom69
Well then that’s just stupid, the guy can make crazy catches and looks good catching passes down field. I’m hoping he gets to at least play some really think he could surprise.
ArmyBengal
Chase, Higgins, Yoshi, Sizzle, Irwin and Burton are your 1-6 WR corps. I can't see them carrying 7 when looking at the drop off in talent. While I agree that Burton's production may be limited, I took a look at the 1-6 WR's from last year. Chase, Higgins, TB, Irwin, Yoshi, and Sizzle. Jones only played in 11 games and Higgins only 12. Of course Burrow didn't play the whole season either. That being said, Yoshi was the surprise last year in a season most thought he was a fringe player. While he only had 15 catches for 116 yards on the season, his 4 TD's were good for 3rd on the team behind only Chase and Higgins. 11 of his 15 catches went for a first down as well and only Higgins had a better 1st down conversion rate. While that may not be anything to write home about, it was more production that I thought we were going to get from him. I'm not saying Burton is going to set the NFL on fire here, just saying he will have a role in this offense. With the focus on having Moss and Brown catching passes out of the backfield this season, along with a plethora of TE receiving talent, a smaller role won't surprise me in the least. However there is no denying his talent.
Stripes
This is as deep a skill group as I can remember. It might not be quite as strong at the top as peak Chase-Higgins-Boyd-Mixon or perhaps Green-Jones-Sanu-Bernard-Eifert, but just about every player has something to offer beyond just being a guy. Chase - elite Higgins - very good Irwin - usually shows up when he is needed Iosivas and Burton - upside Gesicki - established Hudson - showed up last season All and McLachlan - upside Moss and Brown - upside Maybe Charlie Jones has shown less than these others, but he has had good moments in the return game. That leaves you 3 fighting for the remaining snaps. They will have a RB on the field 99% of the time That's 2 spots 1. Sample or some other form of blocking TE will be 45% of snaps. 2. So that's Gesicki (2 TE looks/Slot), Iosivas, Jones, Irwin, Chase Brown (2 back looks), Hudson and Burton fighting for 55% Who are you taking off the field for Burton? Every single one of the players listed before Burton have gotten the majority of practice snaps with Burrow and have been pretty much been left on the bench during preseason games. Unless there are drastic injuries Burton will not be a big factor on offense the first half of the season and maybe not at all. His best hope is being a return factor that would at least get him active on game days. Even before Burton IF the Bengals are not snapping the ball 70 times a game there will be some whipping boy from the fan base because they aren't producing. TJJackson
I just cant fathom Chase skipping the KC game, which is game 2 this year I think he signs and practices soon. Very soon. Practice has to start soon to get him ready for KC. If he misses the KC game, he just isnt the player I had thought he was, character-wise

Here would be my only counter point to that. In your numbers above you only give Chase and Higgins as a part of those numbers. However, when looking at the Bengals offense, they ran more 3 WR sets than any team in the league last year. Along with that, they were #5 in the league running 4 and 5 WR sets, while passing the ball more than all but 3 teams in the league. There should be opportunities if that trend continues, but I think there are more mouths to feed this year than last. I don't disagree with you though, just maybe a different perspective as to why. Additionally, should Burton earn more of those opportunities, I don't think he disappoints, which would lead to more. I would say 2025 looks to be a year he could "break out". TJJackson
If I had good money to bet, and I don't, I'd put a large sum on the Bengals plucking a NT and/or a DE off Tuesday's waivers The former being more likely than the latter a RB is a minor possibility as well. If Perine is released, it will be very tempting Or perhaps a P.....its like no one wants this job.
AMPHAR
In 3 WR sets its going to be Irvwin, Iosivas. I'm guessing they'll run a lot more 2 and 3 TE sets in name only. Sample is really the only one that truly functions as a in-line TE. Gesicki will function more like a 3rd WR most of the time. Last year they seemed to like to run Hudson on top of some stack formations out wide, I imagine that will continue a little whether it be Hudson or another TE. They'll probably work a few 2 back looks as well. Its a crowded group of skill guys. I'd hate to see Burton catch the "bust" label. If Zac/Burrow can't convert 1sts downs and get the snap counts up into the 70s there will be some guys catching heat. Really the snap count thing greatly falls on the line to eliminate negative plays and when they call their run game on 1st down they need to be way more effective than what they've done recently. That’s the reality of this dude.
