2024 Offseason News Thread

Yeah great points again by both of you Hoosier and AMPHAR.
It's easy to forget how tough it was to replace Houshmanzadah.
Also agree with knowing Burrow, Chase and Higgins are massive together.

They have young, developing players at all levels of the defense the way I see it.
I remain hopeful, but skeptical at best.

Something tells me WR may be a position getting addressed early in the draft in 2025.

Some thoughts from cbs' "agent's take" column.

Quote

The biggest obstacle to a new deal, whether in 2024 or 2025, could be structure. Typically, the Bengals are in the dark ages when it comes to structuring contracts for veteran players. The only guaranteed money in Cincinnati veteran contracts is a signing bonus and/or a roster bonus payable within a few days of signing. The bigger deals contain an unsecured third or fifth day of the league year roster bonus in the second and third years. The roster bonuses are supposed to be substitutes for additional contract guarantees. The overall guarantees in Cincinnati contracts are less than comparable deals on other teams.

The only exception has been quarterback Joe Burrow, the league's highest-paid player at $55 million per year. He signed a five-year, $275 million extension with $219.01 million of salary guarantees in which $146.51 million was fully guaranteed at signing last September in the days leading up to the start of the 2023 regular season.

The Green Bay Packers structure contracts the same way as the Bengals. Future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been the lone exception. His 2013, 2018 and 2022 deals had traditional salary guarantees.

Cincinnati refusing to make another exception for Chase from this longstanding structural convention might require shattering the record for a signing bonus with a non-quarterback and outrageous cash flow to consummate a deal. The $50 million signing bonus Bosa received from the 49ers is the most ever for a non-quarterback. The signing bonus would be Chase's only true guaranteed money.

The Bengals have started doing more deals with an option bonus over the last couple of years. Option bonuses are prorated over the life of a contract (up to a maximum of five years), including the option years, beginning in the league year when the option is exercised. From a salary cap standpoint, the presumption is option years will be picked up. It remains to be seen whether a massive signing bonus and a significant option bonus in the second year could placate Chase structurally.

Yeah, given that the Bengals don't seem to be in any hurry to spend down the circa $22 million in cap space they have left for this year (though I think $5-6 million of that will got toward extending McMoney, he's the only 2025 FA that jumps out at me as a "must" candidate to extend now) and Chase is already set to count $21 million against next year's cap, the "giant SB plus outrageous cash flow" approach seems most likely.  Imagine Chase getting something like four years and $140 million with like $70 million in year one between the SB and salary and $100 million through year two. Maybe they toss a void year on the end of the deal and convert the year two salary into a bonus to spread out the hit more, I dunno.

If you haven't been watching Lapham's podcasts, you are missing out.
Today's had WR coach Troy Walters and they discussed what's been going on with that group and the approach.
Pretty cool to hear the coach talk about the players and what they are doing at this point and moving forward.

Tomlin is always going to have them playing hard and prepared to be a thorn in the side of any AFC North contending team.     How ever he will always prevent them from choking and screwing their draft position and will he ever rally the team far enough to get back to a Superbowl?

It’s a one year extension. Dunno the money.

Karras said it was basically 2 years, $12 million. I assume he meant 2024 and 2025. He was scheduled to make $5.8 million this season, so I assume 2025 will be something like $6.2 million.

Tee isn’t stupid. The more prepared he is to have a massive season and get in sync with Burrow, the more it pays off for him in free agency next year.

I never thought for one second he wasn’t going to collect that nearly $22 million for the season.

The only way he doesn’t finish 2024 with the Bengals is if something catastrophic happens and then they trade him before the trade deadline. Minus that, I’m ready for what I believe will be a really good year for him.

TEEEEEEEEEEEE !!!

IMO, tagging Tee was the first and best move that could be made to having a great off season.   The summer extensions always get lost in the March FA period too.

Next March Karras and hopefully a couple other Bengals won't be hitting anyone's top 50 FA lists.

I watched the interview that Dan Hoard did recently with Houshmanzadah and our new WR Burton.
It was a pretty good interview and listening to them speak was worth the time of the video IMO.

Couple of notes...
You can hear the youth in Burton because he sounds like my 17 year old, who always says "Bro".
TJ made a comment that made me think about the Bengals, in that he said when people think of the Bengals, they think of Chad first and then him.  I found that interesting and think it depends of how old the person is or at least depends on which era of Bengals are we talking about.

Personally, I don't think of Houshmanzadah all that much when the Bengals come to mind, at least not at the top.
Going back to the 70's and 80's most of the time for me, I think of Kenny Anderson when I think of the Bengals.
I remember my dad ALWAYS talking about Anthony Munoz, so he is another name that come to my mind quickly.
Esiason, Dillion, Curtis, Collinsworth, Riley, Parrish, Krumrie, Lapham, Fulcher, Palmer, Brooks, Atkins, Green and more.

If i'm thinking about the resurgence of the Bengals, it's definitely Chad, but MY personal #1 I think about is Kenny Anderson.
Guess it's because I'm older and my first real recollections as a young boy are of Kenny Anderson playing QB.
The new uniforms, the freezer bowl, the Bengals first Super Bowl appearance.  All of that IS Kenny Anderson.
Not to mention he really should be in the Hall of Fame.

So what person comes to your mind first when you think of the Bengals?

I don't think I could identify 1 person only for the Bengals.   Mostly eras of Bengal teams.  The 1988 squad is still probably my favorite and when you look up team offensive stats from that era.   Its still hard to believe no offensive unit has approached the Boomer/Wyche era since.    Amazing really considering the 88 offense was running game and play action and all the offensive favoring rule changes and the Bengals since have never produce a unit that can approach season long averages of that team.
