Offensive Line Draft Talk Thread

Had  the pleasure of re-watching game number 2 of 2020.   Bengals @ Browns.   Thursday Night Football.

Man,  they need players everywhere.   After watching Fred get dominated at RG probably at least 10 snaps could have been career altering for Burrow.    I think I'm moving off Pitts/Chase.    I would love those players but its just pure incompetence on that line.

That said, Burrow went down and scored what should have been the game winning TD with less than two minutes and our d allowed Cleveland to March right down the field and win the game, if memory serves.

That was at home.    This was in Cleveland.  Fred was targeted by the Cleveland DL.  They moved their DL over him and then it seemed everyone lined up over him made a highlight play.

Now Xavier, Spain and of course Rief weren't with the Bengals in this game.   Just a lot of faith put on those dudes to stay healthy.

They need multiple WRs and OL in this draft and I hope at pick 38 there are guys at that position they feel good about.

But after getting reminded about the OL incompetence last night and how dangerously thin they are; I'll be on pins and needles until pick 38 comes up with some OL starting competition.   Then probably pick 69 too.

Poll:

Suppose Atlanta takes Chase at #4. Nobody is biting if/when the Bengals try to trade down. What is your preference?

1) Sewell

2) Pitts

3) Someone else

Pitts if no trade down... but someone will over a trade deal to them. Smart money trades down.

Slater is a perfect fix for RG for this year.  Then bump out to RT.

Wouldn’t touch him at 5 if he’s full time guard.

Sure, but you still don't *need* Slater at 5 to do that. There will be a guy at 38 who can do the same thing and there will be solid starter prospects for a plain old RG as late as the fourth. Maybe even the fifth.

I'm not really directing these comments at you, but more at a general, almost hysterical, trend I see on twitter, and hear on sports talk radio and podcasts. As just one example, you had Tim McGee going apeshit yesterday and declaring that if the Bengals don't take a lineman at five Burrow should demand a trade. This is the ugly underbelly of#TeamSewell (and please note I am NOT saying all of the Sewell fans are like this, most aren't but some of the most vocal are).

hilarious because the ONLY way the Bengals take Chase is if Burrow campaigns for him...  I am 100% certain of this.

God, how good would it be to take Chase at #5, Dickerson at #38 and Alex Leatherwood at #69

Got to go Edge with either 2 or 3rd pick.

I'm solidly team Chase, then OL, edge

Eff EDGE. Just sign Kerrigan or Houston still out there in FA as a one-year stopgap. Since o-line is this deep in this particular draft, just hammer line. Address it once and for all.

Matt Miller is releasing individual scouting reports to his subscribers. I am not going to put them all here, but he did release his report on Chase today, so I will paste that. I don't think he has done any for o-line yet, but when he does I will put Sewell's up here too.

Name: Ja’Marr Chase

Position: WR

College: LSU

Height: 6’0 3/8"

Weight: 201 lbs (pro day)

Overall Rank: No. 2 overall

Position Rank: WR1

Strengths: Chase is the ideal combination of body control, strength, physicality, speed and overall athleticism. Despite not having elite height, he’s a monster in traffic because he’s strong enough to out-position defenders and has elite vertical jump skills. Against SEC defenders in 2019, before he opted out of the 2020 season, Chase showed the speed to separate over the top of defenses (see Florida and Alabama games) when facing man coverage. He’s a WR1 from Day 1 on an NFL team. In 2019, as a 19-year-old, Chase scored 20 touchdowns and won the Fred Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s best receiver. He is scheme-proof and can fit into any role playing outside and inside receiver.

Weaknesses: There isn’t much to write here. Chase isn’t amazing in terms of open-field quickness and elusiveness. That might be it.

What I Love: Few wide receiver prospects combine Chase’s physicality, aggressiveness and athleticism. He’s super-aggressive and competitive but also has the speed to blow past defenders. He’s rare.

NFL Comparison: Amari Cooper

Grade: 97/100

Position Specific Traits:

Agility: ++
Big Plays: +++

Jumping: +++

The more you watch the 2020 offensive line play, the more you’ll think that adding multiple players to that group is the way to go.  Tobin will take a trade down if he can do that.  Get a Slater or  Darrisaw.  Don’t hang up on the hype of a 15 game player.  You’ve got decent WR prospects this year too through the rounds.  Think more Darney Scott than Craig Yeast.

Understood and I agree the takes like McGee's are crap.  However the Bengals are trying to walk a fine line IF they go Chase/Pitts at 5.

They will have to hope for no run on OL in first/early 2nd.  Hope there is OL THEY grade as starter as rookie over any other position.   Then most importantly have that player work out.

I mean if we are being honest we've talked about OL in the 2nd for multiple years on this board and a lot of the names thrown around aren't solutions today and much less their rookie years.

Slater hands down fixes RG this year.   Worse case he's a Zietler type guard.  I know that's not ideal with the 5th pick.    Medium case he's dominant guard like Nelson.   Best case he's high level tackle starter in the mode of Whitworth.

Houshmanzadeh also says to take a lineman at 5.  He backed off of saying it had to be Sewell, as he doesnt want to fight about whether Sewell is the best OL in the draft

I love Chase and Pitts, wouldnt be unhappy with either, but would also be happy with back to back linemen at 5 and at 38

Still prefer a tradedown over all other options.....too damn many holes to fill

I really, really, really want Creed Humphrey.  Probably lost if not taken at 38, and might not even be available then.

I think we just disagree on how fine the line is. I think it’s pretty thick this season and it just doesn’t worry me. Anyhow, here’s a good thread on Wyatt Davis.

I love him as a third round option, not so much in the second, where he is likely to go, just not alot of game tape and what is there is against DIII

I haven’t seen bench pressing that good since Russel Bodine.
