6th Round: Dan Herron

OVERVIEW

The man they call "Boom" has been a productive and powerful starting back for Ohio State over the years. He is an extremely physical runner for his size and hits the hole hard. He has production and NFL qualities, but not quite starting potential. He started on and off for three years and was implicated in Ohio State's recent NCAA troubles and forced to sit out the first five games of his senior year. He is an effective slasher-type with third- or fourth-round value. He would need to play special teams to make a 53-man roster and has displayed the physicality to do so.

STRENGTHS

Herron is quick out of his stance to get the ball and make a decision whether to hit the whole, or sink his hips and ignite his explosive lateral step to get outside. He has good vision once through the hole, but is better running outside than through the tackles. He can quickly get to top speed and will accelerate throughout the play; he has deceptive top end speed. He is secure with the football and a good receiving option out of the backfield. Boom is tough and will stick his face in front of rushing linebackers effectively.

WEAKNESSES

Herron has decent ability to run between the tackles. He hasn't run many NFL-type routes out of the backfield in college, where he was used more as a safety outlet. Herron can neutralize blitzes but can get overpowered by men simply bigger than him.

I can't believe they preferred Herron to Polk.

Whatever. Herron isn't a bad pick for the 6th round... it just baffles me that they had him graded higher than Polk.

It's not just the Bengals. Every other team in the league has also passed on Polk multiple times, I would suggest to you that the grades were wrong. Clearly there's an issue with Polk -- I have no idea what -- that has removed him from everyone's board.

Polk is said to have a degenerative condition. I think that really scared everyone off...

Ah, I hadn't heard anything that specific. The shoulder?

Well, it's the shoulder that has scared everyone off. And it's silly, because Dr. James Andrews cleared him.

I remember another player whose injury history scared everyone off. Arian Foster.

Polk is a superior RB to Herron. He just is. Whether the scouts are right to be scared off by his injuries remains to be seen... but I'm betting he signs as an undrafted free agent and makes everyone look silly - just like Foster did.

Could happen. Hell, everyone passed on Dillon because he had small kneecaps. Doh.

All I'm saying is that it isn't just the Bengals who have Herron rated higher. It's the whole league. Time will tell who was right.

DAN HERRON - RB - OHIO STATE (No. 177 Overall)

STRENGTHS: A short, squat runner with strong legs and a good build to take on tackles, Herron can sneak through the line of scrimmage and make plays in space. He’s a solid receiver who could be an early player on third downs.

WEAKNESSES: Herron missed time in 2011 due to suspension, limiting his senior production. He lacks the speed to run away from the defense and can be limited in space.

OVERALL: A good running back who doesn’t do any one thing great, Herron is a solid option as a No. 2 back but should not be looked at as a starter quality player at this time.

Herron might be an upgrade over Scott in the pass catching department... but it's certainly not a guarantee that he makes the team either.

I'm not a huge fan of the pick... but it's the 6th round. It'll do I suppose.

Look at it this way: Scott is in the last year of his deal, so we just drafted his replacement in 2013, assuming he doesn't beat Scott out this year. If Herron flames out, it's a 6th round pick. BFD.

I'd be surprised if he sticks on the roster. Doesn't he have to sit out the first five games?

Completely underwhelming back in college. I didn't even know he was projected in the draft, thought he'd be a FA at best.

Why would he? He did last year I don't think it counts in the NFL

Some writer stated that in his draft profile on NFL.com, I take it that's false info. I know Tressel was suspended in the NFL for about as many games, but that was a team decision I believe.

Still not sure he makes the roster.

At this point concerned about this team's Rb's and LB's as units. They're sub-par overall.

I never thought much of Herron.

The only positive I can think of: Watching the Buckeyes sorry run game last year when Herron was out made me want to barf. Then when Herron came back, they suddenly got a lot better. In no way and in no particular facet of the game does Herron look great. But even while looking very average, he made that running game surprisingly effective. Maybe he's just an Emmitt Smith type who does nothing noticable, just doesn't do anything wrong.

Don't drop the ball? I like that in a RB.
