glasgowbengal
done a decent job, for a guy off the street and we'll miss his leadership and smarts but right time to go.Where does that leave us on the back end, though?
UK Bengal
Well they must think sands an mays are ready unless there about to sign Newman and slot him at safety.People were crying out for this guess the bengals listened.I would like to wish Chris all the best and thank him for what he's done over the last few years for us. HoosierCat
Not unexpected. But yeah, he did some good in his time here and I wish him the best. The move frees up a bit over $1.9 million in cap space. Not that the Bengals need it, of course... Kazkal
Though i wanted you cut ty for your time as a bengal you were great but we needed youth and speed at that position. HELLO Taylor Mays
volcom69
Yea I have a feeling Newman will be coming in or not, and I wonder if they use him at safety! Good luck to Chris. Hope Mays is ready not sure how this will work out
redsbengalsbucks
I would have rather kept him for backup depth, but Zim must think the youngsters are ready.
ArmyBengal
To start, I wish good luck to Crocker. There were times where he looked to be the only person with any intensity on the field. To bad we didn't see much of that last season. That playoff game doomed him.I'm left with questions...I wonder if that moves the safety position up in their thinking of the draft ??I wonder if they are just that sold on Taylor Mays taking the spot ??I wonder if the talk of Newman really was in regards to thinking Crocker would be gone ??I always thought they would go safety in the draft, but was thinking a FS not SS. Using a first on a safety wasn't really what I was thinking either, especially if the thought is having Taylor Mays starting. I wasn't really a fan of Newman coming in at the CB spot, but if Zimmer thinks he would be good taking Crocker's spot, I would trust his knowledge of him.Either way, I was hoping this would happen, but wish him luck. COB
Crocker immediately added toughness and attitude when he got here. It wasn't that long ago that our defense was known for being soft. Crocker helped change that.He knocked Santonio Holmes into the middle of next week, then stared at the Steelers bench. Easily one of my favorite plays of all time.
ArmyBengal
He knocked Santonio Holmes into the middle of next week, then stared at the Steelers bench. I remember that as well and was all pumped up. To bad his intensity at that time didn't rub off on others. Then things just seemed to fall apart and then that playoff game of his that was just embarrassing. Walrus
I would call Crocker's tenure in the Bengals' secondary a pleasant surprise, overall. I agree he brought needed toughness and leadership to a defense sorely lacking in both. We'll need someone else to step up with some of those intangibles we're losing with Crocker. Strange that they're just now releasing him, tho... Hope he can catch on elsewhere.
HoosierCat
Per the story on the .com, there is a chance they bring him back later on if he doesn't catch on elsewhere.
ArmyBengal
Per the story on the .com, there is a chance they bring him back later on if he doesn't catch on elsewhere. After they see if they can get someone better through the draft or off the waiverwire ??That would be my guess, but I say just leave it and move on.While Mays may have his issues, Zimmer got Roy Williams to produce here with his flaws.I'd like to see what he could do with a younger version of the same. Scottishbengal
After they see if they can get someone better through the draft ..........Barron possibly ????I can't wait to see what Sands and Mays bring to the team so perhaps Barron may be too high a pick to fill that spot.If Crocker returns to add some depth and mentor the young guns I'm happy with that, if he gets an opportunity eleswhere then good luck and thanks. HoosierCat
Per the story on the .com, there is a chance they bring him back later on if he doesn't catch on elsewhere. After they see if they can get someone better through the draft or off the waiverwire ??My impression was that it was more along the lines of an "in case of injury" type thing.I think they are pretty much set at safety. Mays (SS) and Nelson (FS) will be the starters, Sands and Miles the backups. They may add a mid to late round prospect or UDFA who will end up on the PS, and they'll need some camp fodder at the position, but I think you can cross safety off the list for the first 3-4 rounds of the draft, if not longer.CB is where it gets interesting. Right now I have Leon Hall, Jason Allen and Nate Clements as locks, and Pacman as practically a lock. So we're up to 8 DBs. Last year they kept 10. Right now we also have Rico Murray and Brandon Ghee, which gives us 10 DBs currently. And there is still the Newman chatter. Now, obviously Ghee hasn't done anything and Murray has been on and off the roster, so either of those could open a spot up for a Kirkpatrick, Gilmore or Jenkins. And practically every mock on the planet is giving the Bengals one of those guys. But where does [insert your favorite here] fit?Clements is due more that $4 million in salary. They aren't going to pay him that to sit on the bench, and if they cut him they would have to eat half the $6 million guaranteed they game him last year.Hall is making big bucks. As long as he's healthy he plays.Allen signed a 2 year, $8 million deal. I haven't heard if any of it's guaranteed but if he were cut it would be a shocker. And he isn't going to sit on the bench while collecting that kind of coin either. And of course they just re-signed Pacman. Short-term though.I think a case can be made that the Bengals think Hall will be back, that they can eke 1 more season out of Clements and that Allen can take over in 2013. If so, they will shock everyone by not drafting a CB in the first.
ArmyBengal
Hall will be PUP'd. I just don't see him playing to start the season.Murray ?? Ghee ?? Whatever. Any 1st rounder makes then a non-issue.
TJJackson
Ghee hasn't done anythingNow come on, be fair here - he has collected his paychecks, become an expert in the use of crutches, and is best buds with all the trainersThats something, right? If so could the Bengals be looking at an instatnt upgrade at the roster spots with an eye to a longer term for replacement of Clements? Are the draftee's subject to a League minimum salary as rookies? - If so there may not be a catastrophic effect on the cap and current contracts. membengal
No. Based on free agency, no chance they take two CBs in first round.
HoosierCat
(but I'd prefer to steer clear of Jenkins and his baggage issues) Agreed. Hopefully they've already taken him off their board. No more head cases in the locker room, please.

TJJackson
I dont like Barron because he is a one way safety - a SS - and I want all the safeties to play both waysI don't want Janoris Jenkins unless he is still available when we pick in the 5th round. Some other team wants him before then, they are welcome to him and his baggage.I like Gilmore a LOT -----except----- he is much more of a zone corner while we need a man/bump-n-run corner. I would not hate the pick at 21.

kingwilly
Jenkins intrigues me.With professionals like Clements, Hall and Allen, they could be a tight group to bring Jenkins into. Pacman is the perfect example of "how not to act", and Jenkins can learn by seeing the outcome up close and from Mr. Jones himself. If he is there at 21, take him. Someone may take him even earlier. At 17, you've got to have more of a sure thing. Jenkins as our second r1 pick is fine by me.It's all about
cHaD711Johnson
And the more he gets brought up, the more I keep getting feelings of a Barron/Jenkins first round...I think that's one of the more unlikely scenarios.. I don't see Jenkins going in the 1st at all and I think the Bengals are ready to go with Mays.
