Andre Smith Sidelined

GEORGETOWN, Ky. _ The Bengals took the field Thursday morning and opened training camp at Georgetown College with right tackle Andre Smith still on the sidelines.

Smith, who missed all of the last camp in a rookie holdout, was one of what appeared to be five players not suited up. The Bengals had hoped the foot surgery that knocked Smith out of all of the spring workouts would be healed enough for him to line up in the first practice.

Under hazy skies with a touch of a breeze, head coach Marvin Lewis commenced his eighth Bengals' camp in helmets and shorts. They aren't expected to go full pads until one of Saturday's two practices.

Also not working were cornerback Leon Hall, left guard Evan Mathis, SAM linebacker Rashad Jeanty, and safety Tom Nelson. Hall apparently tweaked his back in a workout a few days ago and is expected to be out only briefly and could be back as soon as the weekend. Jeanty (leg) and Mathis (foot) are coming off surgeries.

If wide receiver Terrell Owens is going to get No. 81 when he signs later Thursday, it hasn't happened yet. Wide receiver Antonio Bryant took the field with it.

That's alot of weight to put on them tender feet. I'm starting to officially doubt.

Per a series of tweets just now, no contact for Smith for 2-3 weeks and they are considering him a candidate for the PUP list that matters, the one that would sideline him for the first six weeks of the season.

Jeebus.

Greg, NOW you can start your "BUST?" thread. Frustrating.

It's times like this that make me wish this site didn't have an obscenity filter.

See, you have to get creative with intentional misspellings. Like, "fokk you, Alvin Keels!". Seriously though, this whole thing is getting annoying.

Has a top-10 pick never played a snap before? He really does have a chance to go out as the biggest bust in draft history. Which is good, since he had the biggest bust at the combine. You're damn right I'm bringing that joke back.

Nope...not gonna do it. I said all along I hoped I was wrong...I still maintain that hope. If I wasn't wrong, I will never rub that against my brothers who have held out greater hope than I.

I hope the big guy can do it.

Nothing more frustrating than injuries. Particularly foot injuries on big people. Ask Bill Walton.

I went to find Reedy's positional preview on the OL to remind myself the depth at T (and couldn't find it at the Enquirer). It's Whit and Roland starting with Collins at back-up, and... who else? If Smith can't go, who else there?

Just found this thread and perused it:

I don't know the next two candidates. I would hate to be beholden to Gabriel Manns and/or Andrew Mitchell at any point this year, I think...

Not sure what was in the previously mentioned twats but after watching Marvin's press conference it seems more like a matter of conditioning rather than the injury itself.

FWIW, I couldn't hear many of the questions, only Marvin's answers, but at one point he spoke about a player being fully recovered, but eight weeks behind everyone else in regards to conditioning. Might have been Reggie Kelly though as his name, amongst others, was mentioned in the same sequence.

Marvin also claimed Antonio Bryant was healthy, but needed to change the way he practiced and played. In short, he picked up some bad habits from "playing on one leg" and now needs to adjust by playing lower and making sharper cuts.

I think this team struck out by not taking a mid-round T this last draft. Only having Whit, Roland, Collins and Smith, with Smith being a HUGE question mark seems a bit of a "Doh!" moment.

Mitchell and Manns are interesting projects but nowhere near ready for NFL primetime.

I guess Mathis could swing to LT, as he has the footwork and hands to make it work in case of utter disaster should Whit have to go to RT.

Big Willie now spends his most of his free time sleeping in the hallway outside of Mike Brown's office.

Nat Geo channel has a pretty good documentary about the Beachmaster, the dominant male Elephant Seal that rolls around the beach, tusking upstart rivals, and servicing his harem. Don't know why I just thought of that.
