HoosierCat Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 Five weeks in and we hit the bye week already. Really a blessing as it will let Ja’marr and Tee heal up. Hopefully Risner too. But the biggest question imo is whether what passes for the brain trust in Cincy can figure out how to run the ball on offense and stop the run on defense. I’m betting no but maybe they’ll surprise me. Quote
volcom69 Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 They have done it before on offense that is. Last year they took there run game from one of the worst, to one of the best halfway through the season. I was excited about that this season about Chase Brown and running, but it’s like they just through all of that out. Hopefully they can figure something out. Defense yea who knows with them, not sure if they will find a fix or not. They are so up and down, when they are up and guys are tackling flying to the ball, getting to the QB it’s so awesome to watch, then the next drive they go back to last years defense. Not sure how you fix that. Quote
volcom69 Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 Well Al Golden signed his other love child in LB Jack Kiser from Jax practice squad. Golden love this kid, as he played under him at Notre Dame. He said his defense only came together after Kiser started playing and really wanted him in the draft. Now I wonder if he will see the field other than special teams. Can he tackle better. Golden said Kiser can really read defenses. Quote
COB Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 Golden must see something no one else sees. 4th rounder, then gets cut. Ok we’ll give him a chance, could be tailor made for a Golden-designed defense. Quote
HoosierCat Posted October 13 Author Report Posted October 13 Shrug. They had a spot to fill with Bozeman going on IR and Kiser is as good a choice as any to take those teams snaps. Quote
HoosierCat Posted October 13 Author Report Posted October 13 Looking around the league after five weeks, things I did not see coming: Browns at 3-2 Texans at 1-4 Giants at 3-1 Vikings at 5-0 Rams at 2-3 Quote
ArmyBengal Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 Well we are sitting at 3-2 heading into the bye week. Despite many thinking this is about where we would be when considering the teams we had on the schedule, it doesn't feel good. I didn't expect us to win 3 games playing the way they have. I didn't expect the defense to look so lost yet again. I didn't expect being close to leading the league in penalties through the first 5 weeks. I didn't expect feeling like despite being 3-2, that they really haven't done much. They need to figure out who they are going to be during the bye week. The thing is, Zac is very meh after the bye week. He has gone 3-3 during his time as coach here. All three of his losses after the bye have come against divisional opponents. Who do they play week 7 you ask? The Ravens. I made the comment in another thread that they have the ability to go on a win streak including the Dolphins game. The schedule is not really all that tough and they fix some small areas, they could be a really fun team to root for. Penalties, lack of tackling and poor coaching has killed the team and made them look bad even in wins. If Zac isn't on the hot seat as a coach, they should really look at how that term is defined and used. Just give Pitcher the play calling responsibilities already. Jesus help this team. 1 Quote
ArmyBengal Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 Lets look at some guys through the first 5 weeks of the season: Burrow: 5th in the league in passing yards with 1361. 4th in completion percentage at 71.4%. 4th with 11 TD's. He's thrown 3 INT's and has been sacked 9 times. Chase: 22nd in the league in receiving yards with 289. Tied for 12th with 27 receptions. Tied for 4th with 4 TD's. Higgins: 7th in the league in receiving yards with 423. Tied for 12th with 27 receptions. Tied way down the line with 1 TD. Brown: 22nd in the league with 246 rushing yards. 35th with a 3.5 average per carry Tied way down the line with 1 rushing TD. Giesicki actually has 4 receiving TD's to this point, tied for 4th in the league and tied for 1st among TE's. The run game simply has to be better to support this offense and it's not all on Brown. They rank 28th in the league with only 114 attempts. That's play calling from the coaches and Burrow changing plays. I'll look more at the defense in a little bit. Quote

HoosierCat Posted October 13 Author Report Posted October 13 On the plus side that should get Endries off the weekly inactive list. Quote
ArmyBengal Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 I really like Endries and think he will make some plays for sure. He simply came into a deep TE room. Quote
HoosierCat Posted October 13 Author Report Posted October 13 CBS lists Mafe as No. 4 on its top 10 list of FA signings through week 5: Quote 4. Bengals EDGE Boye Mafe Contract: Three years, $60 million with $19 million guaranteed It has long felt like the Cincinnati Bengalswere a few pieces on defense away from getting back to the postseason with Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higginsleading their high-flying offense. That's why the Bengals went on a spending spree defensively this past offseason, trading the 10th overall pick in the draft for defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and then signing both edge rusher Boye Mafe and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen in free agency. Mafe has been one of the biggest game changers in football this season. His 3.0 sacks through five games are great, but he's also making a consistent impact as a pass rusher on a regular basis. Mafe's 25 quarterback pressures rank as the sixth most in the entire NFL, just ahead of Danielle Hunter's 23 and just behind Greg Rousseau's 29. He is playing like one of the NFL's best pass rushers through five weeks. That's money well spent. https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/best-nfl-free-agent-acquisitions-kenneth-walker-mike-evans/ Meanwhile, the guy he took over for has 1 sack in 3 games. Quote
HoosierCat Posted October 13 Author Report Posted October 13 Ja’marr won his appeal over the fines for the elbow thing during the Houston game. Good. I thought it was a dumb celebration but it clearly wasn’t offensive. Quote
COB Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 Boye Mafe has been a good to great signing. Trey Hendrickson has that one sack, and he missed the last two games with an injury. Is there any truth to the rumor that after recording that one sack , Hendrickson ran off the field, got on the phone with Ravens’ management, and demanded an extension? It’s hard to say. It’s just what I’ve heard (voices in my head). But let’s face it, he and his wife can’t even start a family when he’s playing on his current 4 year, 112 million dollar contract. You can barely even praise Jesus enough when that’s all you’re making. And when you discover that only 60 million is guaranteed, well, a guy can barely even avoid going on Pat McAfee’s show every week to explain how central the lord is to everything you do, and that 100 million should be guaranteed immediately plus another signing bonus paid out so you and your wife can start a family. 1 2 Quote

HoosierCat Posted October 15 Author Report Posted October 15 Mel’s first big board for 2027 is out. https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2027/story/_/id/50182998/2027-nfl-draft-rankings-kiper-big-board-top-prospects He’s got 5 QBs in the top 10 and 7 in the top 25, which is ideal for the bengals no matter where they end up picking. Similarly he has 3 WRs in the top 13, another position the bengals shouldn’t need to address early. No safeties in the top 25 but he does list 4 corners, and that could be a need depending on how FA goes. Just 1 LB, Cole from Georgia, and 1 RB (Baugh). Finally, 3 LTs, so potentially a successor to OBj could be found here. Quote
Saintsfan1 Posted October 16 Report Posted October 16 Lamar is out a few weeks? Opportunity. Not that I wasn't expecting the road teams to win again. Quote
