derekshank
Who cares what his salary is? With the Bengals salary cap situation, it's completely irrelevant.No. It is relevant, when you talk about giving up draft picks to get him.But you weren't talking about draft picks. You were talking about his salary... because you made a specific mention to the rookie wage scale. But his yearly salary is still rather insignificant compared to the cap room the Bengals have. Irrelevant. In some ways, MB is one of the few remaining capitalists.no, he is a socialist dressed as a capitalist. The NFL's revenue sharing plan has erased any true capitalism from the NFL as an enterprise. It goes all the way down to jersey sales.Mike Brown is very good at gaming the system the NFL has in place. The NFL does not have a business model where "winning" on the field = "winning" at the bank. SoP has executed perfectly the plan to operate his business in the most profitable method wihtin the NFL system. But don't confuse it or him for capitalism.Well, we're talking about two different things here. On the one hand, we're talking about Mike Brown, the employer. And I was merely noting that he feels no compulsion to spend money because anyone else thinks he should. He only spends money when he feels someone has earned it. And that's a very capitalistic way of thinking. On the other hand, you're talking about Mike Brown the entrepreneur. Mike Brown has shown the ability to turn a bigger profit than most despite being in a smaller market than most. Many claim he is exploiting the system. If so... what's more capitalistic than that? Kazkal
It does seem like a no-brainer, and in this division I think he will flourish. He can cover the TE's and come up in run support. Perfect."In this division" is the key. In this division you have to go helmet to helmet with the likes of Peyton Hillis, Rashard Mendenhall, Hines Ward, Antwan Boldin and co. These aren't shifty, speedy guys but are guys who'll bloody your nose and run you over. How many guys will willingly take on Hillis one on one? If Hillis is comin' downhill at my defense, I want Taylor Mays on my side. Now Ray Rice may give him trouble. That's up to Zimmer to scheme upRay Rice may be fast but With how our team has been playing the Run with Rey the Angry Samoan finilly in the middle.I'd like to see what we could do vs a guy like Rice. DC_Bengals_Fan
Same. And the decision will be based, not on some imagined need to spend money... but almost entirely on the performance of the player in question. And if he can't even acquire players worth spending money on, even when spreading one year's cap over multiple years...isn't that the greatest indictment on his role as GM? In some ways, MB is one of the few remaining capitalists. You mean except the fact that he's only profitable due to a fairly communist income structure (TV contracts, revenue sharing) in an anti-trust environment that actively thwarts the free market? I about drove off the road. I hadn't even had a sip of anything at that point, honest.Lap's usually dead on with these things, but if he's right then I'd say cheap MB won this one. Even if Mays only plays STs, he won this one
Sea Ray
I'm not the only one who was shocked to hear 7th rd for Mays. HoosierCat
It wouldn't surprise me if the Bengals ended up filling in their unused cap space with extension for guys like Hall, Whitworth and perhaps Simpson and/or Caldwell. But it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't, either.Same. And the decision will be based, not on some imagined need to spend money... but almost entirely on the performance of the player in question.Just to pick back up on this point, LaCanfora reported last night that the Bengals were in talks with both Hall and Whit on new deals.I think a new deal for Whitworth happens at some point. He won't be a free agent under his current contract until after 2013 and he'd be 33 then. So this is probably his last, best chance for a big payday.Hall...we'll see. If you believe the rumor mill, the Bengals are going after him very aggressively, so they might just make a rich enough offer to take him out of free agency next March. He said something like, "He was a good player when he was younger in college, we'll see if we can get him back to being good again." It was not exactly a ringing endorsement. If anything, it was Zimmer honestly assessing the guy and lowering expectations.

ArmyBengal
Wow, a 7th rounder in 2013 ?? That's not a trade, that's giving him away.Even if Mays is nothing more than depth and a ST tackle dummy, he's worth a 7th rounder.Call the Bengals stupid for dumpster diving all you want, but really ?? A 7th rounder ??If I were a San Fran fan, I would be pissed we just gave away a 2nd round pick for a 7th round pick two years from now. My expectations were already lowered, but I still liked the deal even when rumors claimed the trade compensation was a 2012 conditional 4th round pick. You can probably guess how I feel now that the compensation is said to be a 2013 7th rounder. Can I get a fist bump? And again, I'm guessing the Bengals will use Mays in the same manner that Nelson was used immediately after his trade. In short, lots of special teams duty and a handful of snaps a game until further notice. Or if you prefer, I'm guessing this years plans will be limited to Taylor Mays being asked to play the role of Kyries Hebert instead of a younger Roy Williams. Considering how Zimmer handled Nelson, and how good he's looked this preseason... it's hard to temper expectations that Mays could be a stud by next season. As far as we're concerned, on this team he's a 7th rounder looking for a job.

It had the same effect on mine. I'm glad to be able to report some good Bengal news. That's not always easy. If Lap's right, it also goes to show we're better off listening to the local folks as opposed to the ESPN and Peter King type guys. Wasn't it King that said the Bengals would be drafting T Pryor last week?
