Walrus
Good read. I'm a bigger Maualuga fan today than I was this time last year after seeing him face his demons head-on.
Trevor
he seems to be in great shape but dont you need to be a bit bulkier so he can take the punishment on his body?..Edit: My bad i thought he lost 15 lbs making him 235...
derekshank
Florio is gushing over Maualuga's character.I myself was impressed when I read this quote from Maualuga's mouth;"Some people sat there and said they could have got me the best lawyers to get out of it or to push off the court date and see if we can fight it or appeal it and win. [but] what's all that going to prove?" Maualuga said. "I'm going to get a slap on the wrist, pay a ticket and not get a DUI charge? It's not going to prove anything. I'm going to keep doing the same BS stuff and not taking care of my body and partying. I'm glad it happened. I got to learn some things and dig deep inside and listen to and find out about the people who cared who Rey Maualuga is."I'm used to hearing athletes make excuses and downplay their mistakes... you know, like children. Maualuga has stepped up as a real man here.Florio was also impressed:Wow. We all love a story of redemption, and Maualuga has written the early chapters of a saga that could be one of the best we've seen in recent years. NJ29
I'm extremely happy for him, not only as a football player, but as a man.He did look pretty thick last season, and if he's sharper, quicker, and fresher throughout the game, as well as more dedicated to film study, we could have a scary linebacker on our hands. HairOnFire
"Tuesday morning, he took the field weighing 250 pounds -- 15 fewer than when he went into rehab -- and with his first semblance of six-pack abs." ---Steve Wyche An unfortunate choice of words? The scuttlebutt heard around USC circles a few years ago spoke of Keith Rivers and Brian Cushing competing head to head for the title of hardest working Trojans, with an honorable mention going to the overacheiving Matthews. As for Maulauga, it was often said just getting by was always good enough for a player with his instincts and striking power. In fact, most observers got their first look of Rey without pads at his combine, and even a plinker like myself noted at the time how soft and puffy he appeared. Fingers crossed. DC_Bengals_Fan
The comments section at PFT (and most comments sections frankly) make me sad.Usually from Pissburgers. The funny part is the fierce competition between them and Raider fans to see whose fan base is least functionally literate. As for Rey's quote, it really was impressive. Doubly so because it sounds as if it wasn't written by a lawyer or PR hack - Worthlessburger could take some notes there.
Tommy
Congrats Rey, keep on keeping on, let's just hope you can make it a year and then you pretty much have, first 3 months are always the hardest, lets just hope he was being honest and didn't just say it to say it. I also thought this guy was a monster and wanted us to draft him, ya'll got a monster lb'er.
derekshank
BumpMaualuga continues to impress Florio. We noted in today's one-liners that Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga says he stopped drinking. It's also worth noting that when Maualuga orders a beverage now, he emulates teammate Chad Ochocinco."Nothing. No alcoholic beverages," Maualuga told Bengals.com. "I go out. But not as much. Sometimes I go to dinner with my family or hang out with the guys. I've been in situations. I have cranberry and Red Bull. Ochocinco's drink."Maualuga was arrested for DUI in January, and in February he pleaded guilty and entered an alcohol treatment facility. Now he says he's committed to working with young people, as he did this week at an NFL-sponsored event for at-risk children in Eureka, California."To be able to come back, to get my image back to what they thought of me being this not a superhero, but this guy everybody can watch," Maualuga said. "I think when I got in trouble, it was like, 'This kid thinks he had it made and now everything is going down the drain.' When I took up this event, I said, 'OK, this is my opportunity.' " It's nice to see him continue to give the Bengals positive headlines... Especially when so many Bengal headlines tend to be about Chad's s**t and negative spin on Mike Brown's redemption projects. Jesus dudes, Ocho has never broken the law as a member of this team.Dear God! Let's notmmake this another Chad thread. The most recent headlines about Chad was about him not showing up to OTAs and how Palmer didn't like it. That's negative. And in general, when Chad is making news, it's about his twitter account where he constantly talks s**t. It's very hard to deny that Chad brings plenty of negative feelings toward the Bengals via the media. This thread is supposed to be the positive change that Maualuga has undergone, and the praise he's receiving in the media. Almost the only praise the media has found fit to give the Bengals regarding character issues.
BengalszoneBilly
I don't want this to be a Chad thread... Then you shouldn't bring him up to begin with.
derekshank
I don't want this to be a Chad thread... Then you shouldn't bring him up to begin with.Fair enough. But I was simply pointing out the contrast between this awesome story and the constant drama and negative attention Chad brings. Whether you're pro-Chad or Anti-Chad, it's not hard to see the difference in the way these two players are currently portrayed in the media. ArmyBengal
I will still be wearing my #58 jersey this year and loving it !!!I think this may be one of those situations where him getting caught may have been the best thing for him.Learn the lesson early and move on in a positive direction. Let it be the fuel for this coming season and beyond.

His initial negative news has now faded away into him just being a regular guy doing his job, and getting ready for the season to start. I'm happy with that.
