What "coach"? The so-called team source was never identified as a coach. I would like to know what coach from the Bengals supposedly trashed Matt Jones to a 3rd rate internet writer after the Bengals offered him a contract.Just asking.

One that's seriously fed up with Mike Brown making decisions that look better on paper than real life.

What's your counterargument, that Jason Cole made it up? Thanks to how the Brown organization runs the team, we have relatively few suspects. I'm guessing it's not Pumpkin or any of the rest of the Brown family. It's not scouts since they have none. So it's either the GM or the coaches.

Personally I'm hoping the GM called out the owner.

The Bengals have a GM? But yes this reeks of the Redeemer making yet another offensive personnel decision.

Add another numbskull to the roster, can only hope he does something worthwhile, but more likely Redeemer fell in love with his measurables, or Alexander thinks he can make him into a receiving TE.

He's still a downgrade to TJ and a mediocre WR at best. Again I don't care about this much, ultimately, just hope it doesn't prevent them from getting someone in the draft they should take.

Apparently Matt Jones has Tab Perry skills.

Matt Jones to play tight end?

The Bengals plan to use their newest addition — wide receiver Matt Jones — not as a wideout, but as a tight end, according to in-house NFL guru Carlos “Big C” Holmes.

Sources tell Big C that the Bengals like Jones’ size (6-6, 220), even though he comes in about 30 pounds lighter than your average tight end. Former Bengal tight end Ben Utecht was considered a pass-catching tight end and appeared small despite his 6-6, 245-pound frame.

i can kinda not see why they did this move....and i kinda can. i dont think it pans out as either a WR or TE tho. I personally would rather have T.O, but i dont think mike brown would do that to Carson

So, in other words, you're hoping that Mikey called himself out through Jason Cole?

Precisely. ;)

Obviously I was kidding, but that's why you can probably pin the report on a coach if it's accurate - Mikey just doesn't employ many non-family members in non coaching roles.

Though if it turned out that Katie was dogging him behind his back, how messed up would that be?

Why is it they try to convert all these different position players to TE. If he wanted a TE why did he sign a WR? This is a bad idea...

Well, I'm just guessing here, but prior to the position being gutted by injury last season Brat had claimed the playbook was being reworked around the TE position. And THAT plan was apparently going to feature the two most recent additions to the TE corp, Utecht and Coffman, the former well known for being a horrible blocker and the latter somehow considered even worse. So, ignoring for a moment how completely last seasons plan blew up...one thing seems certain enough. That being, there's a spot here for a puffed up WR like Jones or Perry or a flyweight TE like Coffamn or Utecht.

Unless Jones puts on some weight, I don't see this as even being plausible. He weighs 218. That kind of weight isn't going to make him an effective blocker against LB's that weigh 20 to 30 pounds more than him and it's definitely a disadvantage against 270+ lineman. I don't see this working out. I hope this is just speculation on Chick's part.

I'm not sure I disagree. All I'm doing is playing devils advocate...looking for clues to what they may be thinking. But again, they've dabbled in this sort of thing for years and they've had sporadic success. Before being injured Tab Perry did almost all of his damage from the TE spot. And neither of the two players added to the TE spot most recently, Utecht or Coffman, can block worth a lick. In fact, both players have been described as little more than puffed up WR's, right?

Besides, if the Bengals need a TE who can block they've now got a half dozen offensive lineman with plenty of experience in that role.

:lmao:

I guess....

It would be nice to have a 4-down TE though. Having to substitute in and out like that will tell the defense what we're likely to do and Brat's already predictable enough as it is.

From today's Dispatch. Anonymous team sources dissing Jones to the nth degree. WTF?

After the Cincinnati Bengals worked out and signed free-agent receiver Matt Jones, James Cole of Yahoo Sports quoted one team source as saying "it was one of the worst workouts I have ever seen" and another as saying that "he's really not the solution to what we need."

Could this be another case where team president Mike Brown and coach Marvin Lewis aren't on the same page? Or do the two sources simply have it in for Jones? It will be interesting to see who is right.

Then again, maybe the Bengals simply have Jones ticketed to replace 2008 second-round draft pick Jerome Simpson. Simpson has just one catch for 2 yards over two seasons.

i already said it in another thread, but i'll say it here, too...matt jones is doo doo. he was doo doo when he ran his 4.3 forty, and he's doo doo now. dude should be back to FA by week 1, even with our corps of WRs.

here's a fun take on the jones brothers workouts: http://www.faniq.com/article/Pacman-Jones-and-Matt-Jones-have-terrible-workout-with-Bengals-1990622

Funny thing is that, toward the end of last season, I was wondering if Roland could catch.

Hell, he couldn't be any worse at it than Coats, right?
