ZIMMER UPDATE

The latest rumor on Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has him going to the Redskins to be Mike Shanahan’s coordinator. Which is news to Zimmer.

“I’d prefer they talk about me as a head coaching candidate,” Zimmer said. “But I haven’t talked to anybody.”

I think that answers the question of what Zimmer wants.

I really, really want Zimmer back. Cmon Bnegals, get it done please. Dont want another coach to use cincy as a stepping stone.

btw - Bratkowski has been the OC since 2001. wow - that seems like a long time. you would think you would get a head coaching job by now with a tenure like that.

1st down, opponents 40. Run a reverse Brat. Odds say that it should work one of these times. If not its 2nd and 15. brilliant.

I think Brat got one interview after the 2005 season. I wouldn't want him as a head coach. Could you imagine a team leading the league in false starts AND offsides penalties? That would be a Bratkowski team. Predictable and presnap penalties galore. Can you run a reverse on defense? I'm sure Brat will try to find a way.

Hopefully he's a Bad Interviewer like Norm Chow :>

From Bengals.com

SLANTS AND SCREENS

Safety Tom Nelson approached Zimmer on Wednesday and said if he’s in the starting lineup again, when he gets on screen to introduce himself on NBC he’s thinking of saying, “From Mike Zimmer’s alma mater, Illinois State.”

"Just say Illinois State,” Zimmer said.

I'd say that's rocking the boat

Promote Marvin to Cincinnati's first GM not named Brown, and move Zimmer up to HC! :P

Well to sway probably would have be GM/Football guru decision maker I'd be cool with it,I think Zimmer would be a good coach for this team because all the players love him and him & Marvin work well together....I just wish you could Franchise tag coaches lol

I don't believe Zimmer will leave for another D-Coordinator job. If he leaves it will be for a HC job. The Bengals will do what they need to do to keep him, and Marvin will play a big part in that. They've been good to Zim, especially with what he went through with his wife's passing. That'll play a role. If he does end up leaving however, I think I would be fine with giving Jeff Fitzgerald a shot at DC. He's done a good job with the LB's the past 2 seasons, and I'm sure he will keep the Defensive scheme similar to that of Zimmers'. I just don't know about his in-game adjustments....

From Lance's Blog:

Bengals news

From Charley Casserly, CBS NFL Today

"I expect Mike Zimmer to be Mike Shanahan's defensive coordinator in Washington."

"I expect the Cincinnati Bengals to offer Marvin Lewis a contract extension."

I don't get the connection with Shanny? Or does Zim want to go back to the NFC for some reason? I'd find it hard to believe he would take a lateral move but who knows?

Zim is just the hot D-coordinator right now, plus he's not under contract after this season so the Bengals can't block a move. As for why take the lateral move, its a bigger-market team, he gets more exposure and, of course, Danny Snyderbrenner can offer him a paycheck 10 times the size he'd get from Mikey.

I read somewhere that Zimmer dosnt want an extention, that he dosnt want to be with the Bengals org. anymore. I find that hard to believe, but he would leave here and become a D-cord. somewhere else that would just p*ss me off. I dont understand why not go to him now and see if he will sign and what he will sign for. I know Mike is hearing all of these rumors about him and the Redskins, so why not see what he will sign for. I dont get it, but then again im not in football operations.

I gotta feeling that they already talked to him and he said no or let's wait.

I doubt that. If you read that somewhere, maybe you could dig it up, as it would be some serious news.

I think they approached him and, knowing he had a good D, let it ride so he could up his value. I also think all of this took place before the tragic turn with his wife.

Keep him in the "Family". Take care of him, SoP. be a man.

I was on Bengals.com and reading there forum stuff, and it was on there that some radio station had it on, i dont know what the station was called. Like i said i dont know if its true, and i really cant believe it myself, but in these days you never know. I agree somehow someway get him resigned ASAP.

We can't keep Zimmer if someone wants him as a head coach.

But we need to guard against a lateral move to be closer to his children, which would be an understandable motivation since he lost his wife.

The answer is give him a big contract, and hire his son away from New Orleans to be an assistant coach for us.

Good news with Texans not having a Head Coaching position available...Though maybe they want a New Defensive Coordinator who can work with all the talent they have on their Defense...

Again, I don't get the connection with Shanahan at all. So maybe the guy is just speculating. The coaches aren't allowed to talk to anyone until after their season is over, correct?

No Connection to Shananhan but Redskins like to spend money and Zimmer will be top Defensive COordinator Available...People say Zimmer won't want to leave his "players" but how do they know he doesn't want to make as much money to be able leave his children with something? or Simply wants to be closer to them after they loss their mother.

Zimmer is most definitely gone. Minus the fiasco in Atlanta, has track record is very impressive, and he's done one of the best jobs in NFL history in transforming this defense over the last two seasons. He'll cost 3 million or more to keep as a DC, and he'll probably also ask to be promoted to Assistant HC, which I believe is already Anderson's or Alexander's role on this team.

The good news is that Fitz is a more than apt replacement as the DC next year, as a Marvin disciple and a coach who's due a shot in running a defense.

I mentioned Del Rio in another post. I wonder if he survives this season. Especially if they are trying to sell/move the team to LA.

Jack would most likely not come here. I think the one name that hasn't been mentioned as a HC candidate is Brian Billick, who would almost have to have Jack on his staff, with the Minny ties and all. If not, Lovie could come calling, if he in fact leaves Chicago. All of these scenarios do bode well for Cincinnati in keeping Zim, albeit at a hefty pay increase.

FWIW, Del Rio would be the same as Les Frazier on this team, as guys who can actually coach D, and are not afraid to bump heads with Marvin.

I don't believe it's a good fit. I'm thinking more Shanahan or Cowher, if they get a job. It would be similar to Denver or New Orleans, in how they got Mike Nolan/Gregg Williams to turn the defense around. If you look at the current landscape of the NFL, it's much easier to turn a defense around, as opposed to an offense.
