The Bengals Reportedly Also Made Vick an Offer

Watching Dan Patrick show, and he is about to have Jay Glazer on from foxsports.com, and Patrick is saying that Glazer is reporting that Vick had another contract offer out there, and that it was for more money than what he took to go with the Eagles.

It was reportedly from our Cincinnati Bengals.

Mike Brown, he's a weird, complicated, dour man.

I cannot imagine the hailstorm of media and what that would have meant for camp with Hard Knocks already there if Vick had made his NFL re-entry with Cincy...

Carry on.

Well, as I just suggested this morning that Vick would be better than any QB on our roster not named Carson, it appears the Bengals were well aware of that as well. I just didn't think they would be willing to take on the sh*t storm that would have surely followed Vick's signing here.

We reported last night that one other team had made an offer to quarterback Mike Vick, and that another team was ready to do so.

Per Jay Glazer or FOX, the team that made an offer was the Bengals.

Glazer reports via Twitter that the Bengals offered a two-year deal, worth $2.3 million.

Owner Mike Brown said on July 28 that the Bengals weren't interested. "Quarterbacks are like queen bees," Brown sais. "Carson is the guy."

Maybe they ultimately realized, as we suggested, that Vick could help permanently solve the pigeon problem at Paul Brown Stadium.

Mike Brown just can't help himself. Mike Brown = Father Flanagan. It this is true, the Hard Knocks guys at HBO must be dying over it. Imagine the ratings on that show if Vick came into camp, then all the protesters show up and chant and march or whatever animal rights protesters do. Would have been huge ratings, probably would have exceeded the ratings I anticipate for TDL.

Discouraging... I had actually gotten pretty optimistic in the light of this offseason's solid FA signings and a seemingly miraculous draft that the Front Office was finally getting out of its own way and steering the team in a positive direction.

Then in one week I'm hurtled back to grim reality through a uniformly embarassing FO peformance on Hard Knocks and now this news. I guess he is who I thought he was (and I let him off the hook!). The Redeemer is still in charge.

At least this time he threw himself under the bus by contradicting his own public denial that he would sign Vick (as opposed to when he overruled Marvin's similar public statement about Henry last summer). The guy does one interview/year and it's not worth the paper (or kilobits) it's written on.

It's one of those ideas that "in theory" made sense. Vick is probably an upgrade at back-up qb, and would have given them some wildcat options. On paper, that's good. The reality is, though, that kind of thing (all that Vick brings with him) probably can't work on a Bengals team as fragile as this one likely is. Not near enough stability to make that kind of gamble work.

I can picture them in the classroom again

Katie Pumpkin raises her hand like Horshack..."Ooo, Ooo, Ooo." Can we sign Vick? Can We? Can We?

Mikey Boy, "Marvin whaddayah think."

Marvin, facepalm, "UGGHHH!"

Mikey, "Pumpkin do it."

:sure: nice.

vick in this offense (as a starter) wouldn't have been much better than fitzy last year.

what the hell was brat going to do with vick anyways? he can't even run our bland-assed offense without my 8-year old niece correctly calling out each play before the snap.

anyhow, i'm glad vick dissed us (that's messed up in itself). the hate for this franchise would never end.

He's getting $1.5 million this year from Philly, that was more than Cincy's offer. It's only more money if you take into account both years of Cincy's offer, but Vick is, quite reasonably, betting that if he keeps his nose clean and contributes in some fashion $1.5 million this season plus a new contract from someone next year will be far more than Cincy's two years for $2.3 million total.

He didn't turn the Bengals down for less money, that's just not true.

PR aside, Vick would be better than Fitz. Better arm, better legs. Running a possible spread offense wit guys like Coles, Chad, Cheech, Caldwell, Benson, DeDe...those are some nice weapons for a guy to target or force defenses to cover so he can pull down and run.

The claim that Cincy DID make an offer tells me it is more a redeemer decision than a football one. The team is in a fragile state and I think the Vick circus and HBO would have had a further negative effect on the team.

Don't get me wrong, I think the signing would have been very difficult on this team as a whole, but I still think Vick (2 years out of football) is better than what we currently have behind Carson. If Carson goes down for the season again we already know we are finished. Vick could have at least made it a little more interesting.

That being said, has anyone seen the backlash in Philly from the animal rights people ?? Funny and HBO surely missed out...

Vick went to Phily because he has a better chance of playing there. We all remember a healthy Donovan McNabb standing on the sideline holding a clipboard last season don't we? If McNabb stinks it up again early, Vick's waiting in the wings when he's eligable.

Glad he went there too. What a media nightmare it would have been here. Sure Dave and Conan would have had a whole new supply of material, but I don't think it would be worth it on our end for one of the worst QBs ever to lace'em up.

While I'm not surprised, and had no interest in seeing the Bengals sign Vick, whatever you think of Vick there were multiple bidders for his services. It wasn't like The Redeemer stepped in to try and "save" some bum no one wanted. Instead, Vick actually appears to have leveraged an offer from Cincy into better deal in Philly. Nothing new there.

I have to say that this plants a tiny seed of doubt about Carson's elbow in my mind. We'll see how it goes.

I'm not feeling that at all. Rather, I think the offer had everything to do with the likes of JT O'Sullivan, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and all of the other dregs the Bengals have been forced to sign as backup QB's due to the unwillingness of many QB's to backup Palmer.

I would rather him be here than have him in Pittsburgh or Baltimore. If Carson would have went down we would have been solid at QB. Vick doesn't need an Oline to be effective. I would have loved to have him here! The dudes debt is paid
