I really hope I'm wrong and people are trying really hard to say he's an awesome pick, BUUUUUUUT....
Mafe gives me the same impression that Oren Burks gave me last year.
Coming off a Super Bowl win, a player that will do better with more snaps, yada yada yada.

I better be wrong for the sake of 2026.

I have seen all the talk about how short Bain's arms are and I don't give a rats ass.

Has arm length helped Myles Murphy and Shemar Stewart?
They were like 33in and 34in respectively.

Can you win your battle and beat your guy?
Yes?  Bring me Bain, his 30in arms and lets roll !!

When look at both production and athleticism, Sonny Styles is one of the only elite players in the draft.
There aren't many and most considered to go in the first round this year would be considered good.

Just goes to show that when looking at first round talent from one year to another, it's not always an apples to apples comparison.  Today's first round player might have been a 3rd rounder last year.

Not a chance.

No earlier than the 4th, maybe the 3rd if the right guy was there.

Why not go for the best?

High-skill, high-volume slot receiver with average size but extraordinary ball skills. Lemon has room for refinement, but not much. He’s intelligent, confident and polished with the ability to make plays on all three levels. Tempo-driven route-runner who misdirects man coverage and separates out of turns but is fairly average after the catch. Quicker than fast, featuring early acceleration to open seam throws but flashes late burst when needed. More play strength is needed for NFL press and he needs to avoid rushing through multi-breaking routes. He’s an exceptional ball-tracker with excellent catch timing and few focus drops. He wins more combat catches than he loses. Lemon is a plug-and-play, quarterback-friendly talent with first-round value and Pro Bowl upside.

WR at 10! :tounge_wink::tounge_wink::tounge_wink:

(Don't worry, he won't be there...)

While I have been calling Shemar a bust since the moment he was drafted, we have him on an inexpensive contract for the next 3 years and the DE on the other side started to emerge at the end of last season

I am inclined to stick with a rotation of Shemar, Murphy, and Maye.  Cedric Johnson also showed some pop at the end of last season.

I'd like a 3TDT or a LB as our first pick, but there dont seem to be any blue chip DTs this year, so I am inclined to take a chance on Styles, particularly if he knows of this mysterious technique called "tackling" that other teams seem to know of

A corner or an OT would be acceptable if not optimal

at some point, whether draft or FA, gimme a db who can cover the TE.  High priority need.

Theres this guy calling himself "HoosierBengal" on Cincyjungle.......

hmmmm

That`s just how they do most contracts. Odds are they are using more cap space on them this season and Turner & Possibly Hill`s new contracts will have large sums next season. Every team has their preferred way to structure contracts but it has nothing to do with being cheap or dumb. They could create "cap space" anytime if they needed/wanted.

Dehner's post-mortem on FA. Highlights:

He was surprised they did not sign a vet LB.

Quote

[linebackers coach Mike Hodges] expected to see additions. Everyone we talked to did. Alas, a big investment never came. Two names that lived near the top of the list of many, Kaden Elliss and Leo Chenal, didn’t draw as much attention internally. Elliss’ money got driven up above their value ($11 million per year), while Chenal wasn’t a top target.

He thinks the OBjr extension eliminates the possibility of OT at 10, and expects more extensions are coming.

Cincinnati would love to keep both Turner and Hill, successful defensive draft picks, as pillars for the future. Getting deals done with both will become one of the top agenda items once the dust clears on player-acquisition season.

He thinks that Flacco may still be back.

Quote

If Flacco looks around and doesn’t see a path to playing, he could pick up the phone and call the Bengals to come back. Johnson puts the Bengals in a position to say yes.

He believes it's make or break time for Kris Jenkins.

Quote

If Jenkins had developed as expected through his first two seasons, there would have been no reason to sign Allen. Maybe he comes along this year and finally makes good on his draft pedigree, but the Bengals weren’t willing to take that chance. They might say nice things about Jenkins, but they spoke loudly with their checkbook.

What do you know?  Me, shocked they didn't consider the depth of the LB corps.
I've been saying it for years.  Knight and Barrett better step the fuck up this year in growth.

Malpractice across the board. Ignoring linebacker is a war crime. Structuring every contract to maximize the year 1 cap hit is lazy and deceptive. Never considering a restructure for Burrow is negligent.

They’ve “gotten better”. Maybe. They’ve also fallen well short of going all in for a championship. They’ll never learn.

Meanwhile, in the category of "all in"

Quote

The Denver Broncos are trading for Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle in exchange for first-, third- and fourth-round picks in this year's draft, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Tuesday.

The Broncos will also receive a fourth-round pick in return from the Dolphins. The picks heading to Miami include No. 30 overall as well as the 30th selection in each of the third and fourth round.

Agree Stripes.  They haven't done enough if the thought is attempting to compete for a SB.

Funny you mentioned restructuring as I just had a discussion about Burrow's contract at work and the other guy was saying, "The Bengals don't have to worry about cap space because they can restructure Burrow's contract if they wanted or needed to".

Thing is, they do need to.  If you claim you are all in and don't do this easiest of things you can do, then you simply aren't all in.  You would like to get Crosby?  Restructure.  Price of linebackers was too high?  Restructure.  Want a high end DT since you know it's an issue?  Restructure.

I agree the Bengals "can" do that, but they won't and here we sit with BJ Hill (who I like) and Jonathan Allen (who I don't) as our starting defensive tackles.  They replaced Trey with a hyped up Mafe and a BUNCH of hope and prayers.  Not enough.

The lone free agent I'm happy about is Cook and as much I like having him here, he's not enough.
The Bengals just suck and I'm really sick of trying to find the bright spot with this organization.

THIS IS WHAT ALL IN LOOKS LIKE TO THEM.

If they win more games than us I am going to laugh so hard. Schefty: Miami Dolphins Dead Money for this season is now over $175 million.

You remember him. Had one really great season, read his own press, got a case of the big head, ran his mouth and proceeded to be one huge lump of shit ever since?

Yeah THAT guy…

The refusal to restructure deals is kind of the last straw for me.

Teams do it all the time, every year.

And not only does it free up cap space for you in the current year, thus allowing you to pursue good free agents or sign your high achievers (Bates), but it effectively reduces the total cap hit.

Example so Mike’s granddaughters can read this: player A has a big dollar cap hit this year.  You convert 20 million of it to a signing bonus that then gets spread over the life of his deal.  So instead of 20 million this year, his cap hit is 5 every year for the next four years.  But the salary cap goes up every year, so the 5 million per year becomes less and less significant every year.

And oh yeah you got to resign Jessie Bates or whoever AND that high level free agent d lineman or edge.  But you couldn’t sign either without restructuring the large deal.

With everyone else using modern cap management, the Bengals are effectively operating under a different salary cap than everyone else.  I’ve seen it in other areas of life several times - stubborn, self righteous behavior is ultimately self-defeating behavior.

If Mike and family can’t afford to operate their franchise using industry standard practices, the NFL should step in.

The only thing more staggering to me is the fans refusal to see what’s right in front of them. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Bengals, but what I won’t do is defend this organization.

They are the definition of laughing stock.
