I really don't much about Graham.  He's kind of an unknown to me and probably what's keeping me from being all geeked up about him.  I took a look at his coaching background and it's interesting.

From 2009-2015 Either New England's coaching/defensive assistant, linebacker's coach x2, or D-line coach, but never a DC while there.  In that time span, the Patriots always won the AFC East.  Apparently they had a pretty good QB.

2016-2017 The Giants D-line coach.  The Giants were a combined 14-18 and went to the playoffs once.

2018- he was the Packers linebacker's coach and run game coordinator. Green Bay finished 6-9.

2019- This was his first DC job with the Dolphins.  Miami finished 5-11 that season.

2020-2021 Back with he Giants as the asst. head coach and DC.  They went a combined 10-23 in that time.

2022-Present The DC for the Raiders.  Never a winning season going a combined 18-33.

Ok, he's more of known to me now.
THAT'S GOING TO BE A NO.

Usually the only Assistants the people get geeked up about are fired Head Coaches that are returning to the level they had most of their success.

Patrick Graham is a guy I think could do a good job.   His profile seems to be that of an up and comer and his experience has improvement through out.

yeah

the fact that they are even considering him both scares the shit out of me and reminds me once again that I f u c k i n g hate this front office

He's just the lesser of the two evils thus far presented

and now we know Bob Uecker wont be the guy either

To me it’s obvious now that Golden has been the guy since probably before they fired Lou.  They didn’t even bring Saleh or Eberflus in for an interview.  Disappointing to me in the sense that you don’t know what you don’t know until you talk to people and learn something.  Maybe Golden really is the best out there, but if you don’t compare him to the best, how do you even know?

He was on their AFC Championship and Runner up staff and he's now coaching in the National Championship game.  What's the problem?    Golden has been apart of improving defenses and teams for a long time as assistant and head coach.    He's very comparable to any DC available.  Especially in the last 4 years.

I hope they can get him.   Especially after seeing how well he's gotten college kids to play at that level and the fact he'll be dealing with a number of young defenders in Cincinnati.

Patrick Graham just seems like a bad choice. I'd pray I'm wrong if he's the guy. It kind of reeks of "he'll come within our price range".

I am kind of ambivalent about Al Golden. I have some basic questions about the logic of firing Lou Anarumo and then hiring someone "familiar" whose familiarity is based upon his service under... Lou Anarumo. I'm not sure that makes much sense. But at least he comes with some non-zero history of success in the role of DC.

I'm underwhelmed they didn't even interview any of the former head coaches. I know they cost more. Show me you want to win a Super Bowl.

What's the problem?

The problem is that the Bengals are in a rare, and possibly unique in franchise history, position -- and they don't appear interested in taking advantage of it.

They have the most desirable open coordinator spot in the league. I can't think of a time that's ever been the case before. Usually, quality coaching candidates have no interest in Cincinnati. But right now, everyone wants a piece of that Burrow magic.

Is Golden a great candidate? Absolutely. But why not take advantage of the opportunity and broaden your search? There are lots of great candidates out there. Talk to them. You might find someone you like even more.

But apparently, no. The Bengals just did the minimum interviews they needed to do to satisfy the Rooney Rule, and are now sitting on their hands until next Tuesday.

Agree with the thought I wish they would have expanded and at least had the conversation, while simultaneously agreeing that Al Golden would be a good selection.  In total honesty, I went from hating the idea of Eberflus to being very curious in seeing what the outcome of the interview would bring once you take a look at his time as a coordinator.  Thing is, they never had the conversation.  I was disappointed with the lack of conversation.

Maybe Al Golden has simply always been who they wanted.  Who knows?
I've also worked for plenty of people through my life and once I got into leadership positions, I took what I liked from them all and tried to continue that example.  The things I didn't care for, I leave out.  I'm sure Golden is no different.  There are things he learned from Anarumo he liked and things he didn't.  My thing is, he's had success and has been a large reason why Notre Dame is playing in the CFP National Championship Game, leading one of the top college defenses in the country.

I can think of many others I would HATE seeing coming here to take over the defense.

Al Golden would be a great hire.   Bengal fans just mad because the Bengals made a great hire back in 2020 and they know the name.

Nothing is for certain.   They may not be able to hire him IF Notre Dame wins because of potential bigger opportunities.   I think he stands a good chance to improve the shitty defense.  Then probably moves on to a Head Coach spot.

I don't see a problem at all.   They made a great hire in 2020.   Bengal fans upset because they know the name.

I really sold myself on Eberflus.  Really wish they’d have given him a look.

Al Davis was known to use coaching interviews as intelligence gathering exercises.  He’d ask guys a ton of questions, learn their philosophy and what worked and didn’t work for them.  Pretty smart.

The Brown family - “That sounds like a lot of work.”

I dont know that the Zimmer we had as our DC is the same or better Zimmer now

But if he is even 90% of the guy we had before, Ill take him over any other candidate.....he's more of a sure hing to get us back to at least a defense rated in the teens

If he doesnt want to be DC but would be willing to help out our D in some other capacity, I'd take that too
