He would have been the starter.   I can't remember when he got hurt but he was running with the top team in TC.  Myles Murphy was doomed to the scrub squad.   Although I believe Hubbard was also recovering.

I'm glad they brought him back.  At least give him a chance to beat somebody out even if its for depth.

Yeah, Hubbard was nursing a knee, Trey was out with a bruised chest and then Sample tore his achilles. Basically our pass rush fell to pieces at the start of August last year, and never really recovered.

It’s one of those days where I just hate this front office. TBH that’s probably every day, but I mask it well. However, it’s back in full force today.

No big deal, just going to go back to bed.

This offseason its about the big 3.  They are under contract.  A holdout does not provide a clear solution to their assumed demands.   With the cap/cash already accounted for on the cap and the rumors it appears at some point something gets resolved.   Unfortunately there's nothing that mandates it gets done March or even before draft day.  Once past that, its nothing until July 15th.

The media knows this.  So they've sewn a narrative that the price is going up to generate clicks, narratives etc.    Still got to wait on details on a couple contracts but my guess is that its all bullshit.   The Justin Jefferson contract will be the one to beat still.

The reason I say that is Myles Garret guarantee money in 4 years is still lower than Justin Jefferson's 4 year value.  The Browns have used void years/extra years to spread up front money.    That inflates the reported AAV.   The Bengals haven't pissed away $8m a year with Chase.

Normally I am the first one to yell about the Bengals' inept front office, but this year I can't find a lot to get exercised about. Would I like a decent guard? Yes, but the seem to be trying to get one. Would I like to see the Big 3 situations resolved? Also yes, but Amphar is correct that there is no rule that those deals have to come on my personal preferred timetable.

As for the moves they've made so far, I'm generally happy with them. Gesicki was my No. 1 house FA after Higgins, and his price tag looks even better since the Saints spent $10m/year on Juwan Johnson and the Broncos gave Engram $12m/year. Slayton was the kind of guy they ought to have signed after letting Reader go, which like Perine they shouldn't have done in the first place. If Samaje hasn't lost a step he's an upgrade over Trayveon. Hill can still play and Ossai gets a one year prove it deal.

Not sure what people were expecting.

I do think the Browns might have to cut one of their 3 interior line guys soon.  Maybe? Maybe not?   They could also explore their former 1st round draft pick LT that was up and down and all around through his time with Browns.   Maybe a bump inside for a year or 2.

I generally like most the moves that have been made but like most have an eye on extensions or trades.

It would be too much to say I was “expecting” more, but I was certainly desiring more. I want an offseason consistent with Duke Tobin’s own pledge to take care of the big three and also add to the team. I want a free agency period that at least attempts to shore up holes in the roster before the draft.

They have no proven starting guard. They have an anemic pass rush, and if Trey is traded they may have the worst pass rush in the league. They have no interior pass rusher. Neither Cam Sample nor Joseph Ossai has demonstrated that they can be reliable starters on the edge. They still have a problem at starting linebacker (Pratt).

The team is not getting better unless their young players develop. That could happen, but banking on it to happen has routinely failed this franchise.

The draft can help, but they’re cornered into drafting major needs if they don’t sign some free agents. That leads to reaching (Billy Price) and increases the probability of failed replacements (Ogbuehi for Whitworth, Jonah Williams for Whitworth, Dax Hill for Bates, Jordan Battle for Bates — TBD on Jenkins/Jackson for Reader). Now we’re looking at the draft to replace Cappa, possibly to replace a first-team all pro edge rusher, and acquire even one interior pass rusher. They’re locked into these needs in the first few rounds to remain afloat OR they’re taking them late and almost guaranteeing a worse roster than 2024. It’s bad process.

There’s no guarantee that free agents solve these problems, but you have to try. Set yourself up for success.

Zeitler was worth a go. Scherff is worth a go. Jenkins is worth a go. Bare minimum. If there’s no decent guard signing soon, it’s a failure. Banking on a draft pick and/or Cody Ford is a terrible process. And get some insurance for Hendrickson regardless of where that drama leads (might be too late for this one, though an elder statesman like Calais Campbell would be better than nothing). They have enough cap space. They have enough cash on hand.

The Bengals are now being "trade" shamed, lol.   If Trey is the missing link to the Superbowl and he's deserving of whatever contract he desires.   Then the Bengals are justified in asking whatever the hell they want.

I've never seen such slanted reporting.  Keep in mind this is a league that saw Watson traded with known sex assault issues for 6 picks.      Its just fucking noise at this point.

I wouldn’t call it trade-shamed so much as the typical “heads I win, tails you lose” set up Cincy gets in the media.

If they sign Trey to a big money deal, the media reax will be, lol stupid Bengals, they have way too many needs on defense to spend so much on a 30-year-old DE, Mike Brown has no idea how to build a roster.

If they trade Trey, the media reax will be, lol stupid Bengals, trading away their best defender, Mike Brown has no idea how to build a roster.

(And note that if they trade him the compensation won’t matter. They could get 10 first round picks and the media would still say, lol, stupid Bengals, didn’t get enough, Mike Brown has no idea how to build a roster, trade grade F.)

Colts insider has the Colts offering a 3rd.   Bengals want a player supposedly and more?????   I'm glad they are asking for what other teams deem ridiculous.    They shouldn't entertain giving him up on the cheap or even what another team considers a win at this point.

A few years ago a common media opinion shunned draft capital.  Hell, some local Bengals media once again bashed the team because they wouldn't give a 3rd for a TE.  Its just a 3rd.   Now the Bengals are being ridiculous for asking for the moon for a current sack leader.      You can review a whole bunch of top 15 picks that never got the team 17 sacks.

If its that important then there isn't a price big enough to ask for.   Whenever people talk about the prospects of the Bengals losing Trey, well its that important.

Posted

Heard the Eagles were thinking about Trey but the asking price is “ridiculous”. Tell me… what draft pick at #32 can you say has averaged 17.5 sacks over their last two seasons in college and you can pretty much bank on being a double digit sack guy in 2025.

We aren’t talking a top 10 pick here.

Even if you were talking about a top 10 pick.    These are the type of trades that have been going on:

Quote

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have acquired a 2020 first-round pick, a 2021 first-round pick, a 2021 second-round pick, cornerback Johnson Bademosi and tackle Julien Davenport from the Houston Texans in exchange for tackle Laremy Tunsil, wide receiver Kenny Stills, a 2020 fourth-round pick and a 2021 sixth-round pick.

Quote

In March 2022, the Texans traded what looked at one point to be their franchise quarterback, Deshaun Watson, to the Cleveland Browns after he requested a trade in 2021 and sat out the season. Houston received the Browns' 2022, 2023 and 2024 first-round picks, along with fourth-rounders in 2022 and 2024 and a third in 2023.

I mean come on.  There's huge trades all the time and the attitude has always been its just draft capital.   Now a GM floats out the price is too much and the media just laps it up.

There's no reason to leak out your thoughts on the trade package request, unless of course you want the player to sign a big deal and just don't give a shit, agent? or trying to lower the price, GM?

Draft picks have swung back to being (arguably over) valued in the last couple years due to exploding salaries, Chase being a prime example. Every owner now craves a stud on their rookie deal as much as they hate to part with the inevitable second contract bag. That’s why I’ve laughed at the idea of getting a first for Trey, at least in 2025. If the Bengals were willing to consider future comp they might. I’m not a big fan of the idea tho, they need guys now not in a couple years.

From the Colts board.

James Palmer just gave an update on the Trey Hendrickson situation stating that the price could have fallen now to a 2nd round deal to acquire him but teams are still hesitant to send that package due to age (31) and the massive contract extension ($30+ million per year) that he will be handed out. Stated that teams are still expecting him to be traded but are waiting for the acquisition price to fall to an acceptable level. Mentioned the Colts specifically as a team who could make the move. As well as teams like the Bears (he said unlikely) and Green Bay and Commanders possibly involved.

With that many teams and it doesn't even mention Eagles that were rumored "monitoring".   Stick with the ridiculous trade package as long as you can especially when its rumored the Bengals have a $30m offer on the table.

What's the point of trading Trey for compensatory pick value?  Let him sit out and take a chance at the deadline a team gets desperate if he don't want your $30m.

Yah ok now we’re starting to get somewhere. Give us your 2nd, Indy. And I want to flip our firsts, so we move up to 14. And toss in a, say, fifth. I could go for that.

I can’t tell if they’re targeting Scherff, and the negotiations are just taking a long time, or if they’re using the time-honored Bengal tactic of waiting until most of the FA money is spent league wide, then taking their pick of the remaining players when they’re bidding against only themselves.

If they're doing that, our FA linebacker will likely show up in a neck brace with a note from his doctor.  Our guard will retire a week into camp.  And our camp arm will make the practice squad, then end up starting a playoff game for us after Burrow succumbs to multiple instances of trampling after o-line neglect forces us to pull Ghiaciuc off the couch and start him.

Posted

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t want Trey to go anywhere. If he does, I want the ridiculous offer. Hoosier’s suggestion is about as low as they should entertain.

Stockholm Syndrome.

Get outraged.  Duke said they weren’t paying more money for the same team.

We’re probably underestimating the Perine signing.  Burrow is likely thrilled to have him back.  Everyone else is like, “meh,” but Burrow loves that pass blocking and throwing to him on tough 3rd downs.  Perine really knows where the sticks are and got us a lot of important first downs.

Brandon Scherff is an Outland Trophy winner who graduated from Iowa in three and a half years.  Has a genius level intellect, but majored in Leisure Studies probably to show he’s just a regular guy.
