Week 4: Bengals @ Panthers

Did I mention I absolutely detest zone defence, The amount of times were were in zone like Is said above was way too much and allowed a very good young QB to pick us apart.  I would rather we played the vast majority in Man with some zone mixed in.  Showing man then coming out to zone after the snap and visa versa, but lou just seems to call bad plays at the wrong times.  I'm beginning to think the reason he is being looked over for a HC gig is team are seeing something Zac just clearly is not.

So what unthinkable thing could happen this week to push them to 0-4?

Now you did it.

Burrow shows up in a pair of Temu jeans, they unravel while walking in and he breaks his leg.
Chase gets attacked by a rabid gang of sexually frustrated racoons.
The entire o-line gets shingles.
Zack Moss suddenly decides to retire to pursue a career in gay porn.
Logan Wilson gets trampled by a horse while back in Wyoming for a quick visit.

I don't want to worry anyone, but I mean there's 5 for you right there....

 Bring back the 4-3!

The league runs 70%+ zone defense.   This is directly related to the league emphasis on Illegal Contact being called years ago and it carrying an automatic first down.

However,  there is an increasing amount of Zone/Man coverage.   While the Bengals D just got carved up the overall trend in the NFL has been less yards and points from the point of when the league focused on illegal contact.

These coverage are so complex, I seriously doubt a data analysis service (like PFF) can truly give an accurate % of zone vs. man.   But according to them the league play 70% zone and its probably not going to revert back to the old days considering offenses have been slowed since the 2011 (?) rule emphasis.

So?  You fire a D Coord, fine.   Good chance the replacement plays zone the overwhelming majority of the time.

I expect the defense to be better in Carolina. For one thing Dalton is a much more conventional QB than Daniels. Crazy Legs Andy has been known to make an appearance but they don't have to worry about his mobility on anywhere near the same level as Daniels. Hubbard is probably the bigger danger, but they actually did a decent job against Eckler aside from the one big run. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect the D to be very good, but it's basically impossible to be worse than they were Monday night.

Offensively, my $0.02 were the Bengals interested would be to adopt a more ball control-oriented approach. The best way to help the defense is to keep them off the field. Moss and Brown seemed to have found a groove Monday night, let's lean on that. Three or four or five 7-, 8-, 9-minute drives ending in TDs would be ideal. Won't happen of course, this team is built to throw the ball all over the yard and that's what they'll do, come hell or high water. But that's what I would do.

I would prefer crazy legs Andy to get out of the pocket.  He was a horrible play extender.   When his first read isn't there consistently he would constantly event pressure, break pocket and run himself into a situation with no solution.

I'd say don't mess with the offense at all.   Let them try to score as fast and as often as they can.   If the D can't stop Andy Dalton in a shoot out so be it.

The JTO QB school for Dalton from the past week is a good watch.     Dalton had a good/great day.   However,  JTO keeps repeating "He had a great day, but this is some luck".

Dalton got a way with some iffy reads/throws.  There a couple missed should be INTs.   Dalton took advantage of some extraordinary bad secondary play from the Raiders.

However,  I would guess the Bengals secondary could play equally as bad.     The Panthers protection was very good vs. Raiders.

So?  Does the secondary/defense bounce back or do they allow the Red Rifle to ride again!  You allow Dalton to get the ball out quick and then don't tackle behind it.   It will be a long day again for the Bengal defenders.

No worries, apparently Burrow is going to be "a more vocal leader".
Not sure what he has been doing, but that's something I thought he would have done understanding he is, well... the leader of the team.
Said he picks his spots.  While not making an apples to apples comparison, that took me back to Carson and his laid back approach.
It's not me being critical of him either.  I just thought he was more vocal.  I caught me off guard.

Yeah, then there's that.  What's the outcome of doing that?  Is it really changing much on the field?
Again, he always just struck me as someone who WOULD be more vocal and I was surprised to hear that.
However, as the QB of the team and getting paid as one of the best in the league, he SHOULD be vocal.

Wins would be nice at this point.

Yeah, I heard the "Burrow's going to be more vocal" and just rolled my eyes.

The offense doesn't need more talk, it just needs to finish drives. On teams, McPherson doesn't need more talk, he needs to quit missing kicks. On defense, Burrow talking more isn't going to get guys healthy any faster, which is what they need more than anything else.

If anything, this team needs less talking and more doing.

Cowboys vs Giants on Prime tonight:  Al Michaels is a monotone dullard.  It’s over.  Poor Kirk has to try to carry this old timer, and I admire him for how game he is.  Just pull the plug on this bullshit.  Michaels is like 3 seconds behind the action and all he can do is a perfunctory description of the action.  Guy throws a 3 yard pass.  2 seconds of dead air, then Michaels mumbles, “pass good for three yards.”  It’s maddening.

OT: Godspeed to anyone in the Florida big bend region tonight.

A couple years ago I went down to look at a house in Cedar Key, Fl.  I stayed a couple nights, checked the place out and decided not to buy it, as the vibe of the town wasn’t to my liking.  Fast forward and those guys have taken the brunt of two full on hurricanes.  I wonder how they’ll recover, and I wonder who in their right mind would sell home insurance down there now.

My wife wants to retire in Florida and I'm not feeling that at all.
I more of a sit on my back porch and see mountains kind of guy.
Honestly, I love Cincinnati, but hate the winters here.  Not even snowy anymore.
Just overcast, rainy, depression for 4+ months.  No thank you.

Just get a win Bengals !!

Dodged a bullet there.

Insurance is a huge issue in Florida right now. Some companies like farmers have pulled out entirely, others aren’t renewing policies in high risk areas, and rates are going through the roof.

Andy will bring the power of good clean fun and Jesus to the Panthers side.

We bring sound accounting practices, ‘70s era cap management strategies, and a certain financial discipline that is hard to quantify.

Let’s get it on!!!
