General 2024 Training Camp Thread

Recommended Posts

Yeah, I know, camp is still a few days away but I saw something I thought it was vital to note.

I'm sure you all remember the days when we awaited with bated breath the announcement of this year’s camp t-shirt slogan. Ah, those were the days!

Now, in 2024, we have a new topic to keep us buzzing in the days leading to camp: the Joe Burrow haircut reveal.

I want to see camp aim at one goal and one goal only, outside the obvious no injuries…

Do whatever the hell they have to do to have them ready week one. I’m sick of hearing about starting fast, only to see them come out completely flat and take the “L”.

I would love for Burrow to get camp reps this year obviously.    I don't really need to see him on field in preseason games.   Same with Higgins/Chase.    I do think they need to revert back to the old days for the Front 7 and O-line for preseason games and give them reps in preseason games.   Probably the secondary too considering the amount of communication required.      They give up a high number of pressures/sacks anyway but the amount they give in the first two games is even worse.   Which is amazing considering how poorly they've protected a QB in recent years.

Would be nice. Bengals record over the first 1, 2 and 3 weeks in the Taylor era:

1-4

1-9

4-9-1

Ugh.

He's a Vikings OT fumble from being 0-5 week 1.     Then 0-10 first two weeks.

The past 2 years its been "must win" week 3 on prime time.   Thankfully they've gotten the win, but its such a buzz kill to start the season.

It'd be nice to get an early season win vs. the Chiefs Week 2  But Patriots opening week 1 seems like the classic let down then they could end up going into Week 3 needing a must win on prime time again.

I'm serious, having the team ready week one is my one and only "want".

Make it happen Zac.  It's like the #1 seed is lost in the first few weeks or they are playing catch up to it the rest of the season and falling short.
A post season that runs through Cincinnati would be a much better scenario then having to go back to Buffalo and/or KC.
After going to both of those venues a couple years ago, I want those games here at Paycor.

Yup. If the Bengals want to be taken at all seriously as a contender, they absolutely cannot let a New England team with a rookie head coach and either a rookie QB or Jacoby Brissett beat them in their own house week 1. They don't have to dominate or blow them out imho (though they should!) but come on, they basically got handed a classic college football homecoming game here. Go out and take the W.

Oline should definitely get reps to gel. I probably go easy on Trent Brown given his injury history but it's not like Mims doesn't need reps.

Dax should definitely be on the preseason field.

Burrow...I would give him a couple series in game 1, maybe a quarter in game 2, fine with sitting him game 3. By the time we gt to week 1 it will be pushing 10 months since he threw a ball in anger. Let's bang off a little of the rust prior to NE.

If Trent Brown can't answer the bell in Zac's camp practices.  They should go ahead and start looking elsewhere for an early season starter at RT,IMO.    They can't repeat what they did with La'el letting  that guy  practice once or twice then walk into a starter spot.

I hope Trent Brown is in good shape and participate in team reps.   Sure give him vet days when needed.

My expectations through the first 4 weeks of the season:

Patriots
@Chiefs
Commanders
@Panthers

If they are anything other than 3-1 (at worst) I will consider this part of the schedule a failure.
Both the Patriots and Commanders are featuring first year QB's and coaches.  The Panthers with a first year coach and second year failing QB.
The Chiefs are the only of those teams with any type of continuity and stability.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I do want to see Trent out there. I'm just OK with it being, like, 30% Trent and 70% Mims.

I agree completely. The schedule-makers were very kind to them and they need to take advantage of it.

Jay Morrison with the top position battles in camp:

https://www.profootballnetwork.com/top-position-battles-to-watch-cincinnati-bengals-training-camp/

This one should be fun:

Quote

Brad Robbins vs. Austin McNamara

After going more than a decade without a punting competition in training camp, it’s become an annual event. First, Kevin Huber beat out Drue Chisman by default when Chrisman broke his hand ahead of camp in 2021.

Huber beat out Chrisman again in 2022, but Chrisman wrestled the job away midseason.

Last year, the team drafted Robbins, and he beat out Chrisman but struggled throughout his rookie season.

McNamara enters as an undrafted rookie with a 50-50 shot of stealing Robbins’ job.

I had high hopes for Robbins.  No idea why he struggled last year.
Have no idea how the other punter might fare either.  Pretty much clueless.
Position battle sounds like a plus at that spot, so good?
Ok, great...

So, da Bears got their guys signed yesterday, which leaves three first rounders unsigned: McCarthy and Turner (the 16th pick) in Minny and Mims (17).

Ah, just the possibility of a first round holdout makes me feel 30 years younger!

Hasn’t been much on what’s up with Mims, but local reporting in Minnesota is that the holdup is that both players want their signing bonus money in one upfront payment, versus staggered over multiple years. Both are still expected to sign before camp but time is getting tight.

If Turner gets his bonus up front, I don’t doubt Mims will want the same. His SB is currently estimated at about $7.9 million. Not a big chunk of change but we all know how the Bengals love to turn out their pockets and cry about not having any cash on hand. Probably gets worked out but we’ll see.

I wonder what Marvin's camp t-shirt slogan would be this season if he was still around.

"Play Football Today"

"Do My Job"

"Donuts Are For Winners"

"We Are Doing Bengals Again"

*Text-free photograph of Marvin clapping*

Run on your own gas was one of the most ridiculous slogans I have ever heard.

Made me laugh hysterically !!

I still don’t think I get whatever they were trying to convey with that slogan.  Like is there a phrase about running on someone else’s gas, whatever that may mean?  Just horrible phrasing, nonsensical.
