Gambling Question

COB

Recommended Posts

It is being reported that a Colts player placed “hundreds” of bets on the nfl last year.  He probably knew various things about injuries and old teammates on other teams, and probably took his own team to lose on the money line.  Lifetime ban incoming!

Question - You are journeyman X on the last year of your second deal.  It’s over and you know it.  What stops you from going on an nfl betting binge using all your inside knowledge?  A lifetime ban is meaningless because you’re done after this year anyway.

IMO, there isn't enough of a penalty to stop a gambling addict from attempting it.   They could go to jail if caught but that isn't going to stop a problematic gambler.    IMO, its a bad idea for the NFL to get in bed with sports gambling.   They should have a zero tolerance gambling policy on anything while NFL employee at the very least.  Start the education seminar along with the warnings of baby mama classes they do.    The NFL has a major rules problem that they refuse to admit and deal with.   Roger is addicted to implementing more on field solutions for show which complicates the ability to officiate and more importantly the viewing public doesn't understand the rules or reasoning.

So of course with gambling added it, confusing officiating is only going to get louder.

Players/coaches can get in deep betting on other things then ultimately will try to get even betting on something they think they know.  I believe that's the Pete Rose story.  Gambler got in deep and tried to dig himself out betting on baseball and probably fixing games.   There's the NBA ref that was supposedly only giving picks based on his knowledge that eventually landed in jail.   I'm sure the NBA covered stuff up to.   There was strong hints that the NBA put pressure on refs to get series to game 7s etc.

I still believe the Mike Vick dog fighting was more about gambling vs. animal abuse.   Some of those betting pools get into hundred thousands.

To address this part specifically, I'm the guy going ALL IN on using whatever information I am able to gather in making bets.
That being said, I'm not really much of a gambler, but in this given instance I would be.  It's my last year?  What penalty are they going to impose?

Tyrod Taylor, Nick Foles, Case Keenum, Colt McCoy, Chase Daniel, Brian Hoyer and I am sure there are more.
These guys have made millions upon millions of dollars and maybe that's why they wouldn't, but there's nothing to stop them.
It's not like the NFL is going to keep them out of the Back Up Hall of Fame or some shit.

While I personally think the NFL made a mistake getting into the betting business, as I think it has great potential to influence outcomes, I don't really care if players make simple bets.  So what if Burrow places a prop bet that the Commanders kicker goes over 6 points in this coming Sunday's game, for example. No issue with something like that.  Now if Burrow places a bet that the Bengals lose this coming Sunday's game, there's great issue there.  Since the NFL is obviously not able to monitor individual betting habits, they should go zero tolerance in my opinion.  Where the betting takes place, at home vs. on team property is stupid to me.  What difference does location when placing a bet make?  Want a bigger issue than the players making bets?  What about referees?  Pandora's box.

Then again, I could be wrong about all of that.  I think it was a mistake for the NFL though.

I believe a major scandal is coming here in the next year or two.  I don’t know what sport will be involved, hopefully not the NFL.  Players, coaches, or officials.  Someone is going to take the $$, or straight up bet on games then manipulate the outcome.  Tennis is suspect.

I could totally see a referee placing a huge bet on a game they are calling and then purposely blowing calls or throwing flags.
That would not even begin to shock me if it ever happened.  Maybe it already has.
Place a bet on the over/under of the game score and toss ticky tack flags to impede or help the teams.

Flash back to River Downs.   Some shirtless dude yelling at poor Jose at Monmouth Park for fixing a race.    This is what I envision expanded sports betting inside sports stadiums to feel like.

Bunch of college athletes are getting popped now.     NFL and other leagues are trying to walk the line of increased revenue through sponsorship but limiting their employees participation.   Just a bad idea.  They should have zero tolerance and banishment in place.     The states have made sports gambling legal and so accessible issues are going to continue to pop up.

Now I would welcome a Pharaoh gambling table inside Paycor only if the dealer dressed like Wyatt and Doc Holiday.

Right on!  Then once that dealer cleans out all the dim witted marks he starts yelling, doesn’t anyone want to play me anymore, you slugs!  Doesn’t anyone want to play for blood!”

Then I appear.  “I’m your Rasberry.”

The dealer stammers, “Uh, do you mean Huckleberry, like ‘I’m your huckleberry’?”

I go, “I’m your snack cake.  Like the kind you buy at a gas station.”

The dealer says, “What the fuck?  Snack cake?  It’s I’m your huckleberry!  Fucking idiot!”

didn't ridley get a season ban for betting on games?  That would be a deterrent player wise for me but the refs are another matter entirely, there is no way they could police that as they back the refs to a hilt on every call and then when its way to obvious the head of officiating says sorry they blew the call.  Meanwhile the back judge who made the call suddenly retires next season with a nice healthy bank balance.

Punishment is not going to deter a gambling addict.    Just like the alcoholic that drinks their way through the substance abuse program and out of the league.  The NFL might as well hire outside firms to conduct constant investigation into its employee pool.  Then bust and remove.    IMO, should be a life time ban if caught betting on NFL.

From what I've heard the NFL policy trys to walk the line too much.

In a major sports betting move, ESPN has cut a $2 billion deal with casino owner Penn Entertainment to launch ESPN Bet, a branded sportsbook.

ESPN Bet will launch this fall in the 16 states where Penn has sports betting licenses. It will replace the Barstool Sportsbook.

Penn is paying ESPN $1.5 billion in cash over the 10-year term, with another $500 million in warrants that will vest over the term “in exchange for media, marketing services, brand and other rights provided by ESPN.”

According to the terms of the deal, Penn will get the rights to the ESPN brand (for betting purposes) for 10 years, with the option to extend for another 10 years with mutual agreement. ESPN programs will promote the service, with some ESPN talent being involved as well. ESPN will also be able to designate a Penn board member after three years.

whatever happened to Forum Member "CasinoAmbush" ?

If I recall correctly, that name was kind of a temporary name for a long time contributor, Kingwilly.  He lived in California, was a good dude.  Loved football, loved the bengals.

Super bored of sports gambling content flooding sports coverage.   All the hacks putting forth their prop bets, under/overs = boring.

The best handicappers are the ones making the lines and taking the bets.    Sports betting would a much better product if it was pari-mutel.

People are just lining up with their gut feels against a player that has an incredible amount of data and methods to analyze.
