7th Round #1: James Wright, WR, LSU

Maybe he'll turn out to be the Bengals next late round return guy, like that one from UCLA several years ago. He's fast and big. Hopefully more to him than Mann from Nevada that just never panned out.

What was that guy's name from UCLA? He was deceptively fast.

I love great special teams play - true dat. One need only to look to the left.

Unfortunately, outside of P, K and (arguably) LS, due to the limited number of players you can dress for Sunday, a player must be serviceable as a position player as well

This guy isn't

I personally am all for expanding rosters by as many as a dozen more players, and maybe then a team could afford to keep a special teams only guy

Says who?

Every year we have a ton of guys on the bubble. What causes the team to keep one over the other? Special teams play...

They don't keep a bubble player, because they plan to line them up on the field.

You don't think this guy might be more useful than Ryan Whalen?

No animals were harmed in the forming of this opinion

No.

Whalen can catch, just hasn't gotten much opportunity here

For some reason we don't have the 'possession receiver' role in recent years, not since Shipley was injured, even though we have a starting receiver with a very high drop percentage

Ryan Whalen's famed catching abilities won't do much good if he's rarely on the field. After all, Whalen's stat line from last year read something along the lines of 0 rec for 0 yards. Perhaps, as you say, it was the fault of the Bengals for failing to use him, but it seems more likely that they simply don't NEED to use him.

If we find guys that can play special teams BETTER than somebody like Whalen, then it stands to reason that they would be upgrades.

Maybe Wright will be an upgrade in that spot, and maybe he won't. I think it's too early to write him off entirely, however.

  • 5 weeks later...

L'il note from Harvey this morning:

We mentioned it in the Day 1 observation notes, and it's worth mentioning again: seventh-round pick James Wright is one rookie to have on your radar. He has impressed at times during the minicamp, and really got a little attention at one point in Wednesday's workout when he caught a bomb in the middle of the field from Dalton. After beating his defender deep, he worked his way over from the right side of the field and caught in stride a perfectly placed pass. The defender went for the ball and failed in his attempt. Wright easily glided in for a touchdown.
