Here's a glimmer of good news:

Also not practicing Tuesday were Geathers, Dunlap and tight end Jermaine Gresham (knee) as they worked on the rehab field. But Lewis said those players are making progress and while Gresham and Geathers are expected to open the season in Baltimore, he says Dunlap is also making a run to get into the lineup with what he calls his new attitude.

"He’s making very good progress. He’s worked extremely hard. The new Carlos is still the new Carlos," Lewis said. "It’s what you expect. It’s time to grow up and do these things and he has. He’s watched the guys he came in here with and this injury is an unfortunate setback. But you know what? Maybe it’s a good thing. So he’s been able to get going and as of Monday or whatever it was, when he worked out at 11 o’clock or 10:30, I figure he had two weeks and eight hours to make the bell, to answer the bell. He seems pretty close with things."

It just sucks that the regular season is two weeks away and there are a ton of questions. All these injuries are a huge concern unless they heal up in a week.

Running game right now is really bad and after BJGE which we still don't know anything about is pretty shaky. Oh well I guess we will find out how Marvin and the gang handle these situation.

If anything else, I really like Cook's approach to the whole situation. "I was heading out to the field to practice and was told to get my foot checked." This is not a man milking an injury. He'll be back as soon as he's ready. It's good to have players on this team with that kind of mindset.

I suspect the team is waiting on more clarity on Cook's injury.

should sign him regardless but probably would be happier not to pay a veteran.

team is rich in defensive tackles, as was also true when they traded Clint McDonald this time last year. Hopefully they trade a DT for something better than the Kelly Jennings of Centers.

Faine would certainly give a veteran presence and I guess that is good, but his issues are the fact he's a terrible blocker and they have concerns with the bigger guys he would be facing in the AFCN. The opener against the Ravens and Ngata would come to mind.

That being said, I can see why they may want to go with Robinson.

He's a bigger guy at 6'5, 305 lbs compared to Faine at 6-3, 291 pounds.

He also is that intelligent type player they love to have at the position.

Should be interesting to see how it turns out.

I'm actually anxious to see Robinson play Thursday against the starters to see how he does. I have heard nothing but great talk about him during preseason. Lap had praised him in every game I have listened to, and said he and Boling have been the best this camp. I think they just worry about being to young on the line come week 1. I personally don't care as long as the best guys are playing. Remember Marvin didn't want to play the young guys before, and it hurt the team, so hopefully he learned from that. Just like I really hope he looks at Marvin Jones and maybe starts him as well.

Faine is a terrible blocker?

While he played a lot last season, the report was NOT WITH GOOD RESULTS.

I haven't been able to verify, only reporting on a report.

Take it for what it is, but I do like that he has familiarity with Gruden.

FWIW - I'm glad they moved as quickly as they did on Faine. It is highly imperfect, but under the circumstances it didn't sound like they had the luxury to wait and negotiate and see what happened. The FO makes a lot of bonehead moves, but credit where credit is due. I think this is the best of a bad situation. Now all that remains is to get Faine as many reps as possible and await the inevitable announcement on Cook.

Now we know why they are waiting with cook as per schefters tweet.

August 30, 2012

Only players with a "major injury" who are placed on Reserve/Injured after 4:00 p.m., New York time, on Tuesday, September 4, or thereafter during the season, will be eligible to be reactivated at a later time.

So if cook takes 9 games to get better he can then come off IR for week 10

I think Faine was their backup plan all along, and I base that on his history with Gruden. But they probably wanted to wait until after the first game to sign him so they wouldn't be on the hook for his full year's salary. But when Cook went down, their hand was forced, so even if Cook comes back a few weeks into the season, Faine's full year's salary is guaranteed to him. Cancel the naked lady mud flaps for the Lumina.

I think this was their plan because the whole thing was executed so quickly. As though Faine and his agent were staying ready knowing they'd get the call after week one, so when the call came early they agreed on everything quickly.
