Wraith
Wish they would have signed Okoye but getting Newman is big from a versatility perspective.Hope it is a two year contract.

ArmyBengal
Still don't care about this.I guess if someone gets hurt, he can fill in.Safety depth ?? Who knows ??
skyline
Fine by me. I don't expect anything magical from him, but the more depth the better.
HoosierCat
Josh tweeted earlier today that the average age of the Bengals' corners is now something like 28, and if you subtract Ghee and Murray, it hits 30.
ArmyBengal
Well you have to figure there are only so many spots available, so the CB battle looks to be pretty fierce.Nothing saying he makes the cut at CB. If we are talking about the safety position, he may stick longer.
blueridge
I like this signing. Newman may not be the player he was 5 years ago, but neither is Champ Bailey, Asante Samuel. or other veteran corners who still play in the league and are valued for their experience. So, Newman isn't a shutdown CB anymore and may have lost a step. He can still run pretty well, and if Zimmer and ML believe he has value and still can play, where's the downside? I don't care what the average age of the CBs is next year, if they play well. And I would sure feel better about Newman being in the game than someone like Rico Murray. In short, Terence Newman still has quality, the coaches like him, and the team's CB situation is automatically better with him on the offseason roster. Older CBs may lose a step, but they are usually where they need to be when the s**t hit the fan. Zimmer and Marvin Lewis seem to value that quality a lot. His last good year was 2009, also the only one of the last four seasons he's been able to play a full slate. As for Samuel, you tell me how valued he is. The Eagles have been trying to unload him for more than a year. So, Newman isn't a shutdown CB anymore and may have lost a step. He can still run pretty well, I believe this is what's known as "damning with faint praise." Newman is a standard Bengals FA signing: the aging vet looking for one more deal. Occasionally this works out (see Webb, Richmond) but more often not (see Williams, Roy; Hartwell, Ed; or Sam, Fat).
BengalPimp
Newman has battled injuries the past few years (Ribs, Groin, etc) So, age has not only caught up to his speed, but his health as well. I'm not holding my breath, but If he can at least hold his own until Leon Hall is fully recovered, I'll be happy.
jjakq27
I'm not crazy about Newman. He got torched a bunch (or so it seemed) last year in Dallas. Better get him some help over the top.

ArmyBengal
Makes me.worried that Hall wont be rdy at start of season.I've already accepted the fact I expect him to be PUP'd. I think if there is something to worry about, it's that he comes back to form at all.I have faith in that happening, but don't think he starts week 1.That's why I think CB is a must have in the 1st. HoosierCat
In a crippling blow to the Bengals' secondary, CB Rico Murray has been released.

Maybe not, but the coaches liked him. My bet is he gets resigned as a camp body, and maybe to the PS once the season starts, if he doesn't catch on somewhere else. So, I guess that means our CB lineup for 2012 will look something like this:Dre KirkpatrickLeon HallNate ClementsJason AllenTerence NewmanPacmanBrandon GheeThat's one more than they usually keep but army is probably right about Hall starting out on PUP. By the time he's ready to come back injury may have opened a spot.
volcom69
I wouldn't mind that, or if they take Gilmore, but that's not to bad of a corner group. Hope Leon is healthy there will be a lot of compition there

kingwilly
I see the signing of Terrence Newman as Leon Hall insurance. This lets Leon ease back, get his Achilles right and then come back. No rush. What Newman has left is a question but he is big and wont get smoked like Pacman had.I give them credit for addressing the db's this offseason. Stripes
I figure this signing has zero impact on the Bengals' draft board, and if that's the case I don't mind it at all. He can only help the depth, and if we have to have a crappy backup I'd prefer it be a veteran leader over the likes of now-departed Rico Murray. ArmyBengal
What Newman has left is a question but he is big and wont get smoked like Pacman had.Might I suggest looking over some of the Cowboys games last season ??He got down right abused in situations last year.Hopefully Zimmer can find a way to work him in and put him in the right situation.I'd rather have whomever our 1st round pick or Allen starting over Newman. Scottishbengal
http://www.cincyjung...ety-rico-murrayYep we've signed Jason Allen and Terence Newman but at 33 years of age I can't see Newman having the longevity so I'm just wondering if this is a move to make room for Barron.
skyline
No, I think it's completely unrelated.I'm sure the Bengals would be happy to snag Barron, but I highly doubt he falls to them. Seems silly to make assumptions about a draft that has yet to happen.
ArmyBengal
I just condensed the topics seeing as how we were talking about all of this here already.I also don't see the Newman signing or release of Rico-Suave as having the slightest impact on the draft. It just is what it is. A signing.
