Official Salary Cap Thread

Yup, that would be our boys (plus Katie) who have just $71.2 million committed toward the 2012 cap, which is supposed to be about the same $124 million as last year. So the Bengals have circa $50 million in cap room to play with.

OTOH, the Steelers have $141.7 million committed to 2012, so Pitt is looking at something like $16 million in cuts just to get to air. Something tells me there's going to be a lot of unhappy Pitt fans this offseason.

EDIT: scroll down for updated numbers for all teams.

UPDATE: see page four. Bengals moved over $15 million from 2011 so they have $60 million in cap space now.

I want to comment on this, but I'm suffering post-traumatic stress disorder from watching Madonna lurch around the stage during last night's halftime. Nicki Minaj should have been the featured performer, then when they needed 10 seconds of something to appeal to nursing home residents and geriatric fetishists, Madonna could have ridden across the stage in her Hoveround power chair (paid for by medicaire, no out of pocket cost to you).

From what I hear she's still telling people she's like a virgin.

How the NFL goes about picking the halftime performers is beyond me, but whatever they do, they should change it.

That being said, is this the season they are required to spend the 90% or 95% of the cap or is that next season ??

Either way, Mike Brown has the opportunity to do something really big with that kind of coin.

#1. Pay a buttload of that to Carl Nicks from the Saints. While I don't envision him leaving New Orleans, money has a way of changing minds and God knows his addition would change the whole makeup of the o-line.

#2. Don't overpay, but go get Marshawn Lynch from the Seahawks. I think he would be a nice pickup for our running game. Plus he's still only 26.

#3. Keep Manny Lawson, because there isn't much more out there better in FA and he played well last season.

#4. Keep Reggie Nelson, because there isn't much more out there better in FA and he is used well in our defense.

I would go into what they could do in the draft after getting Nicks and Lynch, but it should be obvious and will leave that conversation where it belongs.

Go get this done MB !!!

2013. Still one year left.

I would be down with Nicks and/or Lynch. Don't see either happening, though.

Nelson I would like back. He isn't perfect but the Bengals have put some serious time and effort into rebuilding him and I would hate to see that wasted. Unfortunately, my gut tells me they're in love with Taylor Mays and Reggie will be moving on. Given how little there is at safety in the draft he should definitely draw interest.

I'm ambivalent about Lawson but he did do some good work last year and Moch & Muck are still complete ???. So yeah, get him back.

I'm not a hater, it's just that without a working time machine we can stuff her in, Madonna belongs nowhere near a primetime TV event.

Correction: I am a hater.

Did that article include a link to a list of all 32 teams and their cap number? If it did, I missed it. Just curious

Unfortunately no. Teh google does show a lot of team boards and blogs with individual numbers, though, so if you're interested in a particular team the number is probably out there.

As for the rest of the AFCN, the Ravens are reportedly over the cap already but not as bad as the Steelers. The Browns have lots of room, though not as much as the Bengals.

One other note: per PFT as of the end of November the Bengals were still $19 million under the 2011 cap. So it appears that The Family will pocket a nice windfall along with a winning record.

In fairness to them, that included some very unusual circumstances. They needed to keep the Lion's share of that space open so that they retained the option to trade Carson should some sucker come along

Agreed, and they know it. Keisel was talking about it after the season, something about he didn't expect to be back, and there would be other vets who wouldn't be back. Then the article cited Larry Foote and Aaron Smith as guys who probably wouldn't be back.

Michael Smith talked about the Steelers situation at PFT back on january 22nd.

His list of guys that have a real shot of being cut are:

Aaron Smith, Bryant McFadden, James Farrior, Casey Hampton and Larry Foote

My thoughts? Well... with these guys potentially leaving, Polamalu, Harrison, and Keisel not getting any younger, along with questions at RB and the O-Line... Steeler fans are going to have to start to manage their expectations.

Meanwhile the Bengals have loads of young talent, a bunch of early draft picks over the next two years, and a ton of cap space. Mike Brown needs to strike while the iron is hot.

Absolutely. And on that note I saw today that the Bengals have tossed out a new offer: buy 4 club season tickets, get a free jersey.

Hey, at least he's trying...

Would rather not overpay for a Guard (HUGE GLARING NEED) with one of the best in the league when the team is 80 mil under the cap ??

Yeah, that would suck...

As for WR's, i'm no longer interested in almost anything FA has to offer. Almost...

If they make some moves in FA to address other needs, I have zero problem with another first on a WR should Floyd or Jeffery be available when we pick.

Last year I wanted the Bengals to take a run at Nnamdi. Instead they spent wisely on gus like Lawson, Howard, and Clements. It's better to get alot of quality guys than overpaying for 1 guy. I like the idea of resigning our free agents. Extending the young talented guys, and get FA that are good fits.

Guard

#2 WR

This is going to be the funnest offseason ever. 40 million under the cap, 2 #1's.

In almost EVERY OTHER season I would completely agree, but being this far under the cap it seems like the perfect time to strike out to grab someone who could really add something special to the team. That and free up the draft is always a good thing.

I'm just not a huge fan of some of the guys out there in the market at some of the positions and don't think there is much out there that I would consider as that something special.

Another position to look at is the DE spot. The Texans have to really consider Super Mario and the Lions are trying to figure out what to do with Cliff Avril. DT doesn't bother me as much as others and I could very easily see them bringing back Sims to do what they ask him to do. If not, there are a bunch of guys that could fill that role in FA.

My thing is, if they could get a real impact FA at a position of need, it would allow them the chance to go in another direction in regards to the player drafted or take a shot at moving up in the draft order. There are more than a few guys I wouldn't mind moving up for. Again though, I don't want this to turn into who we draft. Only mentioning the impact on the draft if we get a player in FA that frees it up.

You want to make a splash and free up the draft? I have one name for you:

Cortland Finnegan.

He'd be a great fit in the AFC North (physical, attitude, mean streak), and more specifically, is a perfect fit for Zimmer's scheme (his skills in press man-coverage are better than any of the CBs in this draft). It also transforms one of those 1st round picks into a complete luxury, because as it stands, the Bengals MUST get a CB in the 1st round this year... even if it means slightly reaching.

Option #2: Ben Grubbs. Steal a guy away from a division rival, while getting a top-tier talent at LG. Two birds.

Agree 100%--Finnegan would be a great fit.

Isnt dwayne bowe a free agent?

Yes.

Just for everyone's reference ourlads has all the FAs nicely sorted by team here:

Then mark me down as advocating for bowe. Bowe opposite green would solve some issues and free the draft for the line, rb and secondary.

I agree with Finnegan, think he would be a great fit here. I just wonder how much he will want. Also makes me wonder how much Brown will spend this year.

If the past is any guide Brown will spend but mostly on retaining, not acquiring, guys. I think they will definitely try to keep Pat Sims, Reggie Nelson and Mike Nugent. Collins, Jennings, Brandon Johnson, Pacman, Lawson and Skuta are probably in the mix, too. To the massive frustration of Bengals fans, I think they probably bring back Nate Livings, too. Maybe Roland. Simpson will be there if they want him.

Anyone they want but can't keep will be replaced by someone similar. In short, don't expect a big splash.
