What I dont understand is why didnt Jordan get more snaps with the second stringers, after JTO imploded this preseason. It would be nice to see what Jordan could do with some better talent to throw to and if he looks OK against better D players. JTO should have been dropped to 3rd string 3 games ago.

Well it seems to have Payed off Since JP won the job commanding the 3rd stringers better then JTO could lead the 2nd...

Leinart has signed a 1-year deal with Houston per Mort. So that's that.

(shrug)

I wasn't married to the idea of Leinart. Just interested...for obvious reasons. And those reasons started with O'Sullivan and his inability/refusal to actually run the offense using the entire playbook. And there's the real rub because Jordan may be mistake prone but he's not afraid to air the ball out....meaning the WR's he plays with aren't just running routes for exercise.

So for me it wasn't a case of Leinart versus O'Sullivan, because the first move made was always going to involve dumping JT. Instead, it was Leinart against Jordan for the #2 role.

But this works for me almost as well....mostly because O'Sullivan needed to be replaced no matter what else was done.

Good athlete, good arm, good guy...I think he was a very solid catch. Also - from LeFevour's perspective I bet he is completely psyched as this is a pretty darn good outcome for him. Released from a team where he was a square peg in a round hole and picked up by a team where he's got a solid model to learn from. I think he'll be a hard and appreciative worker!

FWIW-

I watched every snap of LeFevour during the last two Bears' preseason games and it got me pretty excited. He's got a major pro arm. He stands fearlessly in the pocket. And holy cow is he mobile. He was throwing 25 yard corner outs with pinpoint accuracy. He looks downfield pretty aggressively.

The Brown's were getting pretty good pressure on him and the only knock I see right now is that he might take a half-second too long to find the open receiver (he had time with the Cards and shredded them). Several 20-30 yard strikes that were on the money were flat dropped. If you take away the sacks and pressures in the last game the guy would have completed most of his passes.

Bernie Kosar couldn't stop complementing him ("very impressed") - and was openly wishing Colt McCoy would play up to his level and not be afraid to throw 20 yard plus range balls.

Sure, I'm a homer, but if I saw this guy on our team during the preseason I would be pretty stoked about his developmental potential.

I didn't watch the earlier games because I figured he'd be a bit more mature later on...

Edit: One great play: He's chased out of the pocket under heavy pressure, looks down field, and hits a receiver about 20 yards down field in front of him on the sideline. Not something I've seen around these parts for a long time... Next year's backup battle will be fun....

I was going to make this very point and you beat me to it. I think Jordan is better than he's shown. How much can he show with rookie FAs blocking for you and throwing to WRs who are about to get cut? Jordan has had very few reps in the Bengals offense. He generally is relagated to scout duty. I'd love to see him handle the 1st or 2nd stringers after Carson leaves a preseason game early. God forbid, if Carson gets hurt I think Jordan would stepup his game after working as the #1 guy in a week or two of reps. At least he has the arm strength to run the offense. If O'Suck was in there, they'd have to put in the Fitzpatrick noodlearm offense...

I'll argue O'Sullivan had the arm strength needed, but not the mental makeup required. Rather, his habit was to focus only on his primary WR, never bothering to progress through his reads....thereby ignoring half the field. Worse, when he abandoned a play early, which he did often, it reduces the Bengals massive playbook to little more than a checkdown attack that causes little harm even when working. Finally, when pressured O'Sullivans first reaction was to pull the ball down and roll out left, thereby cutting the field in half again....and reducing his potential checkdown options.

Like others have said, Jordan Palmer may throw 30 interceptions if allowed to start a full season, but his style of play isn't self limiting. Because he allows a team to threaten with...if not actually use...all of it's weapons.

I have no problem with that assessment and I'm sure the Bengals knew all along what they had in O'Sullivan. But why did they give him so much playing time this summer? Why did he get more reps than Jordan P? That made no sense to me

LeFevour seemed like one of the best developmental QBs in the draft this year. He outplayed all QBs at the Senior Bowl. Unfortunately, given the Bengals poor history with developing guys (see Rowe, Bramlet, etc) I wonder how much we can expect from him...

I'm going to correct myself on this. I knock the Bengals history of developing backup QBs when Jordan is clear evidence to the contrary. Palmer Jr has come a long way since he joined the team and looked quite a bit improved in his preseason appearances. I still would have preferred a wiley vet-type guy in there (Patrick Ramsey?) but LeFevour has good upside seems to have the tools to develop into a starter one day.
