jjakq27
Sounds like Marvin has had enough. I think Smith can thank Jeremy Johnson for his lack of patience.http://www.bengals.c...53-c9ddb7ee3f58"If he doesn't get to where I want him to get in the time frame I want him to get there," said Lewis of the list that would knock Smith out of the first six weeks of the regular season. "Andre is going to figure out how to become a pro and do things the way it's asked to do all the time," he said. "Hopefully he continues to do it in a timely fashion. Otherwise, I'm not going to go through this year in and year out." National reports have put Smith's weight in the 370-pound range, but strength coach Chip Morton reported last week that he had been reacting well to three-a-day workouts. Part of Lewis' frustration is that he knows Smith, last year's first-round pick, can be a factor at a spot now manned by Dennis Roland. "He's doing OK. That's not a 'well.' It's not a jumping jack. That's not a back flip. He's doing OK," Lewis said. "He's being monitored hourly. I know he could help our offense had he been in here competing with Dennis to play. But I'm not going to let the offense get held back waiting for Andre to figure it out."
HairOnFire
Sounds like Marvin has had enough. I think Smith can thank Jeremy Johnson for his lack of patience. I think the Bengals would happily welcome Johnson back with very very very wide open arms if he'd agree to play another season....at any weight. In fact, I'll argue Johnson's poor conditioning was no longer much of a factor due to how little the Bengals use a FB. But Smith is another matter altogether because he's supposed to be a core building block expected to play extensive minutes. Marvin's latest remarks are troubling, but the one that sticks with me was uttered several days ago about Smith believing he can play at his current weight. If we're talking about 335-345 lbs. I might even agree. The man is simply massive, right? But at a rumored 370? Not likely.

volcom69
Great this team needs Andre out there without him this o-line is not that great. Although we have not seen enough of Andre to say with him in there this o-line will be great. I dont know something needs to happen though to get Andre on the field so this team can see what they got with him.Either way o-line needs to improve from the first preseason game, and i hope they do because it sounds like Andre might be far from gettting on the field. What a shame!

Maybe he's trying motivate Andre, because he needs to learn to be a Pro Maybe he should go live with Whitworth for a few months and learn ...I'm not a fan of Oher and feel his play was overrated but even I'm starting to wonder if he would have been the better pick.Yeah, when I saw those comments, this was all I could think of (warning, naughty language)Well I don't think it really fits being there is a job where his services are required ,ya we can leave Roland in there but it would be like using a 120 lb nerd as a bouncer

Draft for upside but upside doesn't always make it onto the field. Take the lower risk, lower reward and go with a player like Oher. Who did Andre replace? Can't really remember right now. I am sure Oher is better than that guy.
cincyhokie
It's good that Marvin's speaking up and trying to fire up Moobs. It's bad that Moobs needs to be motivated to play.Any chance we pick up some depth on the O-line on waivers and PUP Moobs? Hell, maybe if we get a significant enough waiver pick up we can just IR him. Just a thought.
COB
This useless skin zeppelin is starting to piss Marvin off, which I like. I guess they should have put some residency requirement, and verified daily workout at our facility requirement in his contract. He has no self discipline, at least none that I can discern. "You gotta be s**ttin' me Pyle, you mean to tell me you can't even do one pullup?"

Stripes
Those are definitely alarming words coming from someone like Marvin. I can't say I'm terribly confident that Smith is going to suddenly wise up and get his ass in gear as a result though. It's so frustrating to know that he alone could be a great deal of help towards shoring up perhaps the Bengals single gaping hole on the roster were he not such a dunce. Also, Moobs is out. Skin Zeppelin must replace the nickname until he can reduce his mass back down to Moobs territory.

HairOnFire
Those are definitely alarming words coming from someone like Marvin. I'd say disturbing, but not alarming. Because even Marvin admits Smith is doing well enough, but nothing more. And there lies the real problem...how Smith can perform at an adequate level without trying very hard. Which brings me back to the earlier complaint about Smith believing he can play at his current weight. Because he probably can. To a point. As for Skin Zeppelin, well....no. At least not for me. I'm sticking with Sugar-Teats.
DC_Bengals_Fan
I'd say disturbing, but not alarming. Because even Marvin admits Smith is doing well enough, but nothing more. I think that was typical Marvin understatement that translates into "This guy is terrible and I can't believe those morons drafted him". I think by any definition, "well enough" would have him on the field.

That was about as rambunctious as Marvin gets in interviews, which would seem to indicate that Andre's as far in Marvin's doghouse as you can get. Granted, he qualified things by adding the bit about it not jumping jacks or handstand worthy well, but that's a far cry from...."This guy is terrible and I can't believe those morons drafted him". Frankly, we may get to that point some day if Smith refuses to take conditioning more seriously but right now all I'm hearing is coachspeak. Frankly, we may get to that point some day if Smith refuses to take conditioning more seriously but right now all I'm hearing is coachspeak. So when is he going to play? Year 3 of his deal? Because we've been hearing the same old story with this loser for, what, a year now? When Marvin says Andre is doing "well" in that context, I think that's like when your wife says something is "fine". It means it is specifically not fine. And I bet that Andre is likewise not doing "well" in any sense that would be expected of a kid drafted #6 overall last year. Or in the 6th round.Put another way - how are Monroe and Oher looking now?
HairOnFire
So when is he going to play? Why not wait and see? Or is there an advantage I haven't thought of for always having your panties pre-bunched?When Marvin says Andre is doing "well" in that context, I think that's like when your wife says something is "fine". It means it is specifically not fine. Why do you insist on speaking for Marvin? And why do you always assume he never means what he says? Put another way - how are Monroe and Oher looking now? Better. By default.
HoosierCat
I think Marvin's comments only confirm was reported earlier. Lewis feels Andre bulls**tted (bullshat?) them last year in interviews, bagged this past offseason, and showed up out of shape and not properly rehabbed, thus slamming a big ol' egg into the face of the coach who decided to believe what Andre said, not what was said about him.The only thing that would be surprising were if Lewis wasn't upset and embarrassed by how Andre showed up. Frankly, if anyone wanted any more proof that Marvin has plenty of sway in (most) personnel decisions, this reaction is it. Marvin stuck his neck out...and Andre lowered the blade.I don't think this warning is aimed at this season. Right now, as the old cliche goes, it is what it is. Andre will be ready (or not) when he's ready (or not). But like's Budd's boss at the titty bar, Marvin is going to cross his name off the list and f*ck with his cash, and heaven help the Skindenberg if he pulls this crap again next season and Marvin is still head coach.
