wpeldios
I just want to see someone with some Gator knowledge to come in here and give some really good things to say why he was a better pick than some of the other players still on the board. Hopes and prayers aren't what I was looking for in our 2nd round pick that needs to be motivated to do his job.Well I have watched a lot of Gator games as a big SEC fan. And I don't think you will like what I have to say. I like the potential of Dunlap, I like the overall ability, but I am not overwhelmed. Hell I don't think I could even say I am whelmed. I would go with underwhelmed. The guy has the ability, but his motor has never been there. Here is hoping he straightens out and puts it together, but I was pushing for Cody at that pick. Dadraftnick
Yaaaaaa F-ing hoooooooo!!!!Carlos Dunlap was a 1st RND guy. This is major coup, I cant believe this guy was still there and we got him for 2nd round money! Most people had him going in the 1st round- I think the thing that hurt the most is he wasnt a tweener , he is a 4-3 DE NOT a 3-4 OLB/DE .This could give the Bengals a rotation like the Giants had at DE when they won the Super Bowl.If Odom comes back healthy (he has never been for a whole season) then you have Odom, Michael Johnson , Carlos Dunlap, and either Rucker ,Geathers or Feanane you have a nice rotation to keep all fresh.Dunlap was one of the BEST DE's in the draft.I love a guy named Hall Davis that is a mid round prospect that I had the Bengals taking because they always think of the DE spot as an after thought in the draft.I do agree that he does not always play to what he is capable of but, I believe Zim will motivate this guy. ArmyBengal
It's one of those things where people eventually talk themselves into liking a pick because lets face it, it isn't going to change. That being said, my first reaction was one of confusion with how exactly he fits, regardless of what he "may" be able to do. ArmyBengal
By all accounts, I didn't see but maybe one source that had Dunlap in the top 5 at his position and all had him as 2nd round talent.

BlainThePain
The only reason I feel remotely comfortable with this pick is motivation has never seemed to be a problem with players under Marvin. The problem has been keeping them off of the sauce.I think I'll have a beer.

I really don't understand why they don't take a cab. If I were Katie Blackburn, I would set up some kind of program that would encourage players to take taxis. If we had something like that, Odell would probably still be on the team.
Kazkal
Sounds like they want him to put on weight eventually to 280-300lbs and be a DE/DT like Fanene....
BlainThePain
Does anybody think they'll only go with three true defensive tackles this year?
Kazkal
Does anybody think they'll only go with three true defensive tackles this year? With Talk of Dunlap kicking inside on Passing Downs and then Fanene & Odom also more likely will get kicked inside on passing downs...I think so I think Fanene will be labeled as a DT again. membengal
He's already 277 pounds, it's not like he's a small man.He had 19 1/2 sacks the last two seasons playing in the SEC. So I think he has shown plenty of ability to get to the quarterback. He's a first round talent who fell. I, at least, and I know Hair, and a few others, were hoping they would go D-line early. So I like it from that standpoint. So, thumbs up.
COB
Awesome quote from Zimmer in today's Dispatch. The article about the Dunlap pick noted that he'd had a dui, had bad practice habits, and eased up during games. Then this:"He's going to know from when he comes in here tomorrow what kind of guy we want in this program,: defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said. "He'll know right off the get-go." cincyhokie
http://cnati.com/cincinnati-bengals/bengals-take-de-in-2nd-round-001832/Dunlap out to prove doubters wrongBy C. Trent Rosecrans, CNATI.com Posted April 23, 2010 7:42 PM ETBengals second-round pick Carlos Dunlap certainly has some question marks -- he pleaded no contest to a DUI in January and had a reputation at Florida for taking plays off.The Bengals feel they can overcome those things, and so does Dunlap.Carlos Dunlap"They're going to talk about a lot of things, and I know there's a lot of things I need to work on myself, right now I'm just taking all that in as motivation and I'm looking forward to my NFL career and proving a lot of people wrong, that's all I can do," Dunlap said after the Bengals took him with the 22nd pick of the second round, 54th overall.Dunlap left Florida after his junior year, after a career that featured 19.5 sacks in three seasons. He was also the Defensive MVP in the National Championship Game as a sophomore. In last year's Sugar Bowl, he had two sacks in the Gators' victory over the Bearcats. The Bengals said they did enough homework to feel secure that Dunlap's DUI is a one-time incident."The people we talked to, the kid is a tremendous kid," defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said. "He's a 3.0 student, his Wonderlic test was off-the-chart high. Everyone we talked to said this is a one-time shot, the kid made a mistake." Dunlap said it was a mistake and he's learned from it."That was my only incident on my record, I just told them that that's my first and last incident," Dunlap said. "I never had anything before that and I'm not going to have anything after that. If you're going to make a mistake, you have to learn from it, I apologized to everybody and now I'm ready to move on and turn that negative to a positive."The other negative that was talked about by the commentators on TV was his work ethic and propensity to take plays off from time-to-time.Mike ZimmerLast season that was the kncok against third-round pick Michael Johnson out of Georgia Tech. Both Johnson and Dunlap were said to be first-round talents.Johnson played in 16 games fo rhte Bengals this season and had 16 tackles and three sacks as a rookie."(Johnson)played good, hopefully he'll continue to play good and hopefully we'll get this guy to play good too," Zimmer said.Zimmer noted in the tape he watched, sometimes Dunlap would "disappear" but he was far from the only player he saw that with.At his best, Dunlap has been compared to Julius Peppers, Mario Williams and former UF defensive end Jevon Kearse. At Florida, his teammates nicknamed him "Baby Freak" in honor of Kearse's nickname.Dunlap can run a 4.7 40-yard dash at 6-foot-6 and 280 pounds, play both inside and outside on the defensive line and both Zimmer and defensive line coach Jay Hayes said he could get to 300 pounds in the future. Still, there were questions about character and motivation. The Bengals thought he might be available when they picked in the second round and Hayes made calls to people who knew Dunlap and was assured Dunlap was worth the pick. He will come to Cincinnati on Saturday."He's going to know from when he comes in here tomorrow, what kind of guy we want in this program," Zimmer said. "He'll know from the get-go." generaldreedle
This pick scares the poop out of me. This guy has all the talent in the world, and yet has motivational issues. I don't know about everyone else here, but if somebody wanted to pay me millions of dollars to play a child's game, I think I could find a way to stay motivated. Dadraftnick
I love Dunlap, before the season started he was listed as a top 5 pick. You heard all of this stuff about Jason Pierre-Paul and how athletic he was but, he only put up 6 sacks.Of all of the DE's that were not LB's Dunlap was the ONLY DE that ran a sub 4.6 40 yd dash.Dunlap ran a 4.59 and was the only DE that ran that fast. Not Pierre-PaulDunlap was faster than Pierre-Paul in the 10 yd split 20 yd split and had a higher verticle jump. While I dont think any of that $hit has anything to do with football, it shows that Dunlap was the faster and had a better first step than the guy that every body was making such a big fuss about. And Dunlap has done it on the field and when it counts in the National Championship game.Pierre-Paul may turn out to be a great player , there is NOW a good chance he will, since going to the Giants bacause they have some of the best D-line coaches in the biz.I just think he was over hyped for what he had done and I am glad he was because it allowed Dunlap to fall to us. ArmyBengal
This pick continues to grow on me and if Zimmer can get the first round talent out of him, this defense will look very good headed into the season.
derekshank
This is still my favorite pick of the draft. And I believe that a couple years from now people will be talking about the ridiculous 2nd round talent we have in Maualuga and Dunlap.I doubt he'll be Julius Peppers... but the knocks against Dunlap are the exact same. Meanwhile, Peppers just goes out and produces. Will Zimmer get him to be consistent, and not take plays off? We'll see, but for the next year or so, I think we'll see him and MJ become important role players. Here's another thing I'm really going to like about a MJ/Dunlap combo. MJ batted down 5 passes last year, and with his height and size seems to be very good at that. For all the talk about Dunlap underachieving, he batted down 15 passes last year! HoosierCat
I'm not worried about Dunlap. The whole predraft bit about "motor" and "taking plays off" is just that: predraft chatter to fill airtime/pages. When was the last time you heard an announcer talk about a vet's motor or say that so-and-so took that play off? Relax, he'll be fine. I remember hearing similar things about Johnson last year, and he impressed me with how hard he played all the time. Pre-draft chatter, nothing more. I'm sure that his practice habits will improve with Zimmer.

I didn't bring it up, because they weren't "expert opinions" but a lot of Gator fans seem to think that he didn't actually take that many plays off. They commented that he was limited by constant double teams, and taken out of some plays. Other players on the D-Line were able to outshine him as a result. And when people say he didn't produce, they mean that he only had 9 sacks, 10.5 tackles for loss, and 6 pass deflections in 12 games. What a loser. How about this for athletic ability? He returned kicks in High-school, and returned one for a TD at 260 lbs!
