Wow. Far too young. Puts Sunday's game into perspective.

Yes it does. My thoughts and prayers go out to Mike Zimmer and his family.

From Lance McAlister's blog....

Vikki Zimmer, the wife of Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, passed away Thursday in Cincinnati.

The Zimmers were married for 27 years, with three children. Vikki Zimmer was born in Layton, Utah. She and Mike met during Mike's coaching tenure (1981-88) at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.

"We are stunned and saddened to learn of Vikki's passing," said Bengals president Mike Brown. "She was a warm and popular person in the Bengals family, and our immense respect and affection for Mike makes this especially hard. Our hearts go out to Mike and his family."

"Mike is part of our Bengals family, and we'll support him in every way we can," said Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis. "We will dearly miss Vikki. She was a friend to all of us, and a big supporter of Mike's players. Her thoughtfulness to them in so many ways will also be greatly missed."

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

As the subdued Bengals took the field for practice Friday morning in Paul Brown Stadium, they grappled with the news that Vikki Zimmer, the wife of defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, suddenly passed away Thursday.

“We are stunned and saddened to learn of Vikki’s passing,” said Bengals president Mike Brown in a statement Friday morning. “She was a warm and popular person in the Bengals family, and our immense respect and affection for Mike makes this especially hard. Our hearts are out to Mike and his family.”

The vivacious Vikki Zimmer became one of the unseen stars of Hard Knocks this summer as the very nice lady who made all sorts of weekly snacks for the players coached by her demanding yet popular husband. Chocolate chip cookies. Oatmeal raisin. Snickerdoodles. After she made cinnamon rolls one week, she said she also liked to make sure she made a massive fruit tray every once in awhile.

"Mike tells me, 'Those kids work so hard and so long. They really like it when you make them that stuff,' " Vikki Zimmer said last month. "They're worried about putting on weight, so I want to make it a little bit healthy but he tells me they destroy whatever it is no matter what they say."

The Zimmers were married for 27 years and have three children. Vikki Zimmer was born in Layton, Utah. They met during Mike’s coaching tenure (1981-88) at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. Their oldest child, Adam Zimmer, is an assistant linebackers coach for the Saints.

“Mike is part of our Bengals family, and we’ll support him in every way we can,” said head coach Marvin Lewis in the same statement. “We will dearly miss Vikki. She was a friend to all of us, and a big supporter of Mike’s players. Her thoughtfulness to them in so many ways will also be greatly missed.”

In just his second season as the Bengals coordinator, Zimmer’s defense has been at the focal point of the club’s 3-1 start with a unit that is giving up just 19 points per game.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Got this from WCPO:

Police say Mike came home Thursday evening and found his 50-year-old wife dead and called 9-1-1.

The Hamilton County Coroner's Office says foul play is not suspected. A cause of death has not been determined.

No other information has been released.

Def. stunned today hearing of this news! :( I agree, it felt personal to me, almost like she was the team mom. I know to many others as well...just shocked, I don't know what to say! You got all the support of Bengal nation Mike and the Zimmer family!

I obviously want to win this one for her, but I can't imagine as to what Mike is going through, I couldn't focus!

He prob. wouldn't want it, but I'd give Mike some time off!

My deepest and sincerest sympathies go to the Zimmers. My wife passed away a couple of years ago, aged 46, and so I know from first hand what a kick in the balls they've been dealt. Time doesn't heal, it just allows you to live with it.

It puts football into perspective.

I can add nothing else at this point. My prayers also go out to Zim and his children.

That said, this team, as if it had no previous motivation for the Ravens, had better go out there and win one for her. It sounds like she was almost like the team mom. You don't let the team mom down.

:bengal:

I am way hesitant to begin to guess how the emotions of this might play out. Could be just as easily awful a result to try and "win one for Coach Zim" as to try and go on like nothing happened. Really, I don't have a frame of reference for beginning to guess how this might affect the team one way or another. Not sure if I am aware of a similar instance at any point in my years following the Bengals or the NFL...

Football is something we willingly place great importance in precisely because we're always aware of how ultimately unimportant it really is. It's just a game.

Not to bring him into this thread for any other reason than to be able to relate, but lets hope the defense can react as a whole, the same way Favre reacted by losing his father. If not, it's the extreme opposite where the team has a letdown of epic proportions and honestly, neither would suprise me.
