Bengals only team w/o scout at Div II Championship

Could be, Billy... but I think that's just what Hair's talking about. The scouting scenario isn't going to change no matter how many threads are dedicated to it on Bengals message boards. Fans at least have free will.

That may be true...however, lets take that logic to it's natural conclusion: nothing with regard to the Bengals will ever change as a result of message board threads, right?

So, I guess that's it, eh? Hey, B24, close 'er down. [gifford] Turn out the lights, the party's ooover... [/gifford]

Well of course not. :P

It simply wears thin on many readers to see the exact same whining week after week. Especially this ridiculous "one scout for the entire team" thing. I don't personally care whether the Bengals sent a scout to a game with maybe one or two marginal Combine invitees. Anyone here certainly has a right to complain, but sheesh take a breather every once in a while!

Welcome to hell bungles fans.

You know what? That's a pretty common refrain. In reality, it's not really hell, or anything close to it. In fact, at the end of this season, our coach will finish his first five years on the job above .500. Lots of guys will laugh at me for lauding that, but how would that have looked had someone proposed it to us the year before Marvin was hired? We're not the Bungles anymore. We're better than half the teams in this league. 2.5 scouts versus the league average 10? Yup, that's cheap, and it angers me. But the days of not paying for players are over. And we are far from the Bungles. This very disappointing season will get us 7 or 8 wins. Those are the kind of down years that good teams endure.

Thank you - well put...

I mean c'mon, it's pretty remarkable how outraged some of you get over the claim that the Bengals didn't send any scouts to a game that featured little or no NFL quality talent.

Who says they're not the Bungals? Bengals' fans? What have they won/done to earn any respect? No one outside of PBS cares or remembers 8-8 seasons. Is that our high water mark now? How sad. We should be happy with that because how horrible they were 6 years ago? What kind of logic is that? It's the NFL and even small markets win a whole lot (Pitt, Indy). Why are the Bengals' excused from the party? Because we're a backwater city who just wants to socialize on Sundays? How ridiculous.

And if they have another off-season like the last one, Marv's .500 record will be heading south pretty fast. National prime time games will probably be back to zero next season as well.

You took COB's post completely out of context and skewed into what you'd expect from the absurd image of a Bengals fan you've allowed yourself to create in your mind. In fact, what he said is precisely the opposite of "8-8 is our high-water mark".

You're right, who would want any of these bums. As long as SOP still subscribes to the drugstore list, I think we're good.

That's an idiots argument and you're welcome to it. Many of the small school players you strained your mind thinking of were high round draft picks, others were solid mid-rounders, and it's fair to say that all could be accurately described as prospects that every NFL team were aware of. Besides, your list could have included Ken Anderson, TJ Houshmanzadeh, or even a Rashad Jeanty and Kevin Kaesviharn as examples of the Bengals finding starters from small schools, or in late round, or playing in lesser professional leagues. In fact, their current problems don't seem to be linked to a failure to find adequate talent, but rather...keeping it upright and healthy.

As for the idea of the game featuring a few hidden gems, whose to say the Bengals aren't already aware of those obscure prospects? Quite frankly, you don't know, I don't either, and neither does Bob "I used to be somebody" Davies.

Who says they're not the Bungals? Bengals' fans?
Everyone. Remember our bad years? Highlight shows would cue us up, announcers would laugh at our losing effort, and someone would refer to us as the Bungles. I don't hear that anymore.

What have they won/done to earn any respect?
Won over 40 games in five years. Better than half the teams. Made the playoffs. Won the division. All done from a starting point that may have been an all-time low for the NFL.

No one outside of PBS cares or remembers 8-8 seasons. Is that our high water mark now? How sad. We should be happy with that because how horrible they were 6 years ago? What kind of logic is that?
It's not logic. It is simple reality. Where we came from has everything to do with how we perceive where we are now. And no, 8-8 is not our high water mark. 11-5 is.

It's the NFL and even small markets win a whole lot (Pitt, Indy). Why are the Bengals' excused from the party? Because we're a backwater city who just wants to socialize on Sundays? How ridiculous.
You are right, those teams are better than us. But both went through some pretty rough years. No one is immune to it.

And if they have another off-season like the last one, Marv's .500 record will be heading south pretty fast.
Ouch. True. But I'll gladly call him a loser when he actually is a loser. Right now he's a winner.

National prime time games will probably be back to zero next season as well.
I submit that those national prime time games are evidence that we are no longer looked upon as the Bungles. We'll earn some more of those games next year when we compete for the AFC North division title.

Wow....just wow! Mike Brown (93-169) on one side, the ENTIRE NFL on the other. Once again, 31 teams are wrong and SOP (93-169) is right. You're messing with me right, because you really can't be that ignorant....right?

Mike Brown's win-loss record is a compilation of his work in the past with his work in the present. Fortunately, only half (or rather, a fourth) of that compilation is the least bit relevant now. The talent present or not present on a Bengals team in 1997 has no bearing whatsoever on the current product -- a Bengals team that a vast majority of outside thinkers would call "underachievers"... a term referencing their obvious abundance of talent and lack of production.

Is the entire NFL on the other side?

I have to ask because in my opinion the only thing that matters is whether the Bengals were at fault for failing to send a scout or two to the game between Northwest Missouri State and Grand Valley State? And we'll only get an answer to that question if two things happen. The first and most important is if players from those two teams are actually drafted. The second is if those drafted players actually perform well. If neither of those things happen then the NFL isn't really on the other side at all, is it?

Here's the bottom line. The reason you're whining right now is because you can, and because you want to. And because you want to whine a rant about not sending scouts to see Podunk State play Northeast South Dakota Commmunity College will do until the next opportunity to whine some more comes along.

No Hair, it's just another thing.

Just like Kijana having to buy full-sized shower towels was another thing.

Just like a third string quarterback complaining about having to share jocks was another thing.

Just like Tony Siragusa refusing to ride coach on a recruiting trip was another thing.

Just like picking up the guys that flew coach in a Lumina was another thing.

Just like being the northern most city without an indoor practice facility is another thing.

Just like giving scouting jobs to friends, rather than qualified football people is another thing.

Just like consistently voting against every NFL issue that involves taking one penny from his pocket is another thing.

Just like refusing to allow local teams (for a while) to use OUR stadium was another thing.

Just like pretending to be poor by dressing like Sipowicz from NYPD Blue is another thing.

Just like beating a Hamilton County Commissioner out of a HORRIBLE contract and rewarding him with a job was another thing.

Just like luring your Director of Football Operations from a freaking High School is another thing.

You see Hair, every Owner has some issues. Mike Brown has EVERY issue, but for some reason you are his boy.

Well said Jet...

Oh, how I wish that were true. In reality, Jet dropped the very subject of this thread completely and trotted out a laundry list of perceived grievances that have nothing to do with what was being discussed. And there's the rub because he'll trot out the same list the next time he needs a diversion or wants to change the subject. Sadder still, each time it happens some dumbass will quickly chime in and applaud Jet's negativity simply because it matches their own tortured feelings. Which would be fine if the new dumbass was able to add anything to the original thread, but I think we all know that never happens. Instead, each thread gets derailed and spirals into a stupid rant about the type of car Mike Brown drives.

Bottom Line: The thread is about the size of the Bengals scouting staff, and their ability to find talent in obscure places, right? So somebody explain to me the number of threads this board has devoted to DeDe Dorsey, a player who came from the smallest of small programs.

Oh Hair, you may have hurt the feelings of Bengals44 had you any credibility left. Every time you defend THE WORST OWNER IN THE HISTORY OF PROFESSIONAL SPORTS, you lose a little more board cred. Right now you are pretty much void of credibility, so feel free to throw out all the 3rd grade insults you would like, because nobody is laughing WITH you anymore.

Skipping the Div II Championship is not that big of a deal. Given today's gas prices, they should probably plan on skipping the Combine as well. After all, he's got the Drugstore List, the Dish Network and freaking Mel Kiper for crying out loud. He also screwed one of the top area High Schools out of one heck of a videographer (scout of the month 26 months running). I think we're good!

You purport to own your own business. Is that how you do things Hair? Even a Lawn Service needs a proper management structure. Is Aunt Sally your General Manager? Uncle Bud Director of Lawn Operations?

First, I don't think you're in charge of the cred rankings. Second, I wasn't defending Mike Brown. I was debating the issue at hand, something you quickly abandoned....probably because you don't have anything to say.

Right now you are pretty much void of credibility, so feel free to throw out all the 3rd grade insults you would like, because nobody is laughing WITH you anymore.

How much credibility do you think you still have when you repeatedly refuse to discuss the topic of the thread? Seriously, what am I supposed to conclude when you offer diversions instead of insight? Are you simply incapable of debating the issue at hand or merely so bitter that you're incapable of offering relevant information or an original opinion? Which is it?

Skipping the Div II Championship is not that big of a deal.

No it isn't, and that's exactly the point. There wasn't a single player in that game projected to be drafted, and only one, RB Xavier Omom, who is currently included in the Top 300 ranked prospects. In fact, only two other players from that game are currently listed amongst the Top 500 prospects.

Given today's gas prices, they should probably plan on skipping the Combine as well.

Here's something even funnier than your lame attempt at a joke. I'm betting not one of the players from that game will even be invited to the combine. Yet somehow this thread, written about something you admit is no big deal, has given you another way to get your flowery panties tightly bunched....and that's always hilarious.

You purport to own your own business. Is that how you do things Hair?

I wouldn't worry about me. All you need to know is I already pay someone to mop my floors and thus have no current need for a person with your job skills.

Diversions, are you kidding me? SOP's incompetent frugality is relevant to every thread on this board. For example, is Marvin Lewis a good coach? What the hell difference does it make? Are you really going to trust Captain Nepotisms and his merry band of morons to select a competent replacement? Who the hell wants to come here and work for that boob? Bill Cowher; give me a freaking break, no way does a coach of that caliber work for that embarrassment to football.

I would love to mop your floor for a while Hair. For no other reason than to gain some insight as to how you could possibly defend THE WORST OWNER IN THE HISTORY OF PROFESSIONAL SPORTS. I mean, you seem to be able to form a sentence, so you can't be a complete idiot. I have decided that you must be related in some way. I'm dead serious; I simply can fathom no other reason.

So....are you related?

Your opinion explains very well why all of your posts say the same things. However, it also explains why you have almost nothing of relevance to add in any thread. For example, the only relevant issue in regards to the topic of this thread is if the Bengals were harmed by their failure to send a scout to a game being played by two teams who in all probability didn't have a single draftable prospect.

I would love to mop your floor for a while Hair.

Sorry, I've already filled that position with an angry chain-smoking woman who...when she isn't mopping a floor or cleaning a toilet...can't seem to stop herself from advising me how to run my very profitable business. Thus, there's no need for your services at this time. However, if you'd like to fill out an application....
