oldschooler
Bengals cut Chatman By GEOFF HOBSONSeptember 7, 2007Updated: 12:20 p.m. Perhaps reflecting their uncertain status along the offensive line, the Bengals reacquired rookie center Dan Santucci off the Colts practice squad Friday and cut wide receiver Antonio Chatman to make room for Santucci on the active roster. Wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh worked early in practice by himself on the side in helmets and shoulder pads as the Bengals began Friday morning's practice. Right tackle Willie Anderson and cornerback Johnathan Joseph were also dressed and working with the team. Center Eric Ghiaciuc didn't dress after working Thursday. Rookie wiide receiver Jesse Holley, released on Cutdown day, also was at practice after just being signed to the practice squad. Santucci, a seventh-rond pick out of Notre Dame, had been released in the wave of moves the day after Cutdown day when the Bengals opted to go with just eight offensive linemen. But with Ghiaciuc, Anderson and left tackle Levi Jones all battling some type of ailment, the Bengals must have felt they needed a ninth lineman. The move leaves the Bengals with just five receivers, but Chatman (hamstring) had already been ruled out for Monday night and has barely practiced all summer.http://www.bengals.com/news/news.asp?story_id=6256WR Chatman released The Bengals today further tweaked their roster, terminating the contract of wide receiver Antonio Chatman and signing offensive lineman Dan Santucci to a four-year contract.Santucci had been signed to the Indianapolis Colts' practice squad.Chatman played in only three games in 2006 and was injured in the first practice of training camp. Santucci, the Bengals' first of two seventh-round draft picks, was waived Sept. 2 but was re-signed this morning. The Bengals also made two moves on their practice squad, signing wide receiver Jesse Holley, who had been waived Sept. 2, and moving tight end Tim Day to the practice squad/injured list. Day suffered a hamstring injury earlier this week. The Bengals now have five wide receivers and nine offensive linemen on their active roster.-- The Bengals this morning also confirmed that the entire 2007 home season has been sold-out through season-ticket sales.-- A source told The Enquirer this afternoon that the NFL has rescinded its suspension of Bengals defensive end Frostee Rucker.http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/bengals/
jjakq27
Wonder why they reversed their decision on Frostee? Probably because it was a little excessive?
HoosierCat
Wonder why they reversed their decision on Frostee? Probably because it was a little excessive?Probably because 1. it didn't matter anyhow, seeing as how he's hurt (again) and unlikely to play and 2. they weren't going to win.As to cutting Chatman and resigning Santucci...all I can say is: ummm, OK. Add to the sense that things are a mite discombobulated, tho.
TJJackson
I have to think there was a more capable backup center out there than Santucci - the associated problem is with Ghiaciuc, so he's clearly being looked at as a C rather than a GMoney may be at play too, though - Santucci makes the rookie minimum, I'm sure. In terms of a divisional foe connection, many people around town are fairly vocal about the release of Center Chukky Okobi of the Steelers. He's not great, but definitely a guy that is good to have around. I think the belief was that he was too expensive as a backup, but, hey, if there is a backup that is probably worth the cash, it would be center (IMO). I believe he is still out there, and I would have loved to have heard the chaos in Pittsburgh had he been signed by the Bengals.
ShulaSteakhouse
Santucci at Center Monday night? You've got to be kidding me.Nice off-season roster planning there.I knew ignoring the o-line again would get them in deep doo-doo.What a mess that group is right now. If something happens to Ghiaciuc, then Stepanovich steps in, then Santucci.

So if we drafted a pure guard or tackle, how would that be helping us at center?
The PatternMaster
Santucci at Center Monday night? You've got to be kidding me.Nice off-season roster planning there.I knew ignoring the o-line again would get them in deep doo-doo.What a mess that group is right now.Your forgetting about Alex Steponavich, he's the back up center. Santucci was signed for special teams They will be fine, nothing to see here, move on.
ShulaSteakhouse
I knew ignoring the o-line again would get them in deep doo-doo.What a mess that group is right now. So if we drafted a pure guard or tackle, how would that be helping us at center?Well I wouldn't draft or sign a guard who couldn't play center! (and preferably someone on day one instead of garbage like Santucci or Kooistra or the other fodder they have)There's no good back-up TE, no good back-up (or starting) centers, and they're just as thin at guard when Levi or Willie gets hurt (which happens every year).I don't care what any joe fan here says - it's stupid and the ignorance of the o-line here is ridiculous. You have a franchise QB - protect him for God's sakes, and get rid of Alexander. You'll see what I mean when the year wears on, people will complain about the o-line as a weakeness - just watch. Jonboat
WTF happened to guycheck anyone know? Can't we go one damn day without a freaking injury!!!! I won't lose any sleep over cutting Chatman since we really have'nt seen him much anyway!
HairOnFire
You'll see what I mean when the year wears on, people will complain about the o-line as a weakeness - just watch. Calling the offensive line a weakness wouldn't be suprising if the Bengals have to turn to a 3rd or 4th string offensive lineman. No team overcomes that kind of turnover. What would be suprising is if Santucci even dresses Monday night, let alone play.

I won't lose any sleep over cutting Chatman since we really have'nt seen him much anyway!Neck injury of some kind is all the Bengals are saying. However, he's been practicing despite it so it must not be that bad. Stinger, maybe?EDIT: At least he was until today...from Curnutte...Unofficial Friday injury reportRight offensive tackle Willie Anderson (heel) was back on the field this morning when the Bengals returned to practice inside Paul Brown Stadium.Cornerback Johnathan Joseph (foot) was on the field, too, after missing the two previous days as an onlooker. Wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh (knee) worked on the side with strength coach. Houshmandzadeh was in his practice uniform.Center Eric Ghiaciuc (neck) was not practicing. oldschooler
Update from Hobson . . . The move leaves the Bengals with just five receivers, but Chatman (hamstring) had already been ruled out for Monday night and has barely practiced all summer. Yet he isn't going anywhere. He was still in the locker room after the release was announced and the Bengals say they are keeping their options open as he continues to rehab.Santucci certainly now knows Interstate 74. He got there Tuesday, but with the Colts opening their season Thursday night he only worked out once. And as he was planning to watch the game, he got the call from agent Ralph Cindrich. "Pack your stuff, they want you back." The lure of the 53-man roster is the game check, which is much more than the minimum $4,700 salary for the practice squad. Teams can offer more, which the Colts must have because the Bengals had wanted Santucci on their practice squad. "It was basically a better deal and I thought I had a better opportunity there," Santucci said. "But I'm excited to be back."http://www.bengals.com/news/news.asp?story_id=6256

HoosierCat
Updated update from Hobs...Now we know why the Bengals picked back up rookie center Dan Santucci off the Colts practice squad. Center Eric Ghiaciuc (neck), along with right tackle Willie Anderson (foot) and cornerback Johnathan Joseph (foot) are classified as questionable for Monday night's opener. But wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh (knee) and kicker Shayne Graham (hip) are probable.

djdannos
Too funny to not share....guess Goodell has a hearthttp://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3008842The NFL has rescinded the one-game suspension of Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Frostee Rucker, who had been deemed to have violated the league's conduct policy. Rucker had been charged with two misdemeanor counts of spousal battery and vandalism in Los Angeles in August 2005 for an alleged incident involving his former girlfriend. In April, he settled the case by plea bargaining to one count of vandalism and one count of false imprisonment. He was sentenced to three years of probation and 750 hours of community service. Any guilty plea to any type of domestic incident usually results in an NFL suspension, and Commissioner Roger Goodell gave Rucker the one-game suspension. Rucker appealed and his attorney, Peter Schaeffer, successfully argued for the suspension to be overturned. Though Rucker is eligible to play in the opener against the Ravens, he has been ruled out because of a hamstring injury.
