Yeah, yeah. I know it's preseason, but Jesus H. Christ! This defense is showing signs of DEGRADING, not upgrading! For the Bengals pass defense to allow 497 passing yards is just too much to except for me. There had better ba a MASSIVE improvement in the next preseason game, because the terror of the Lions tri-headed QB attack of Kitna, O'Sullivan, and Orlovsky simply owned the Bengals. 500 yards allowed = NO EXCUSE!

The first team defense played relatively well. With such vanilla scheming, it's hard for me to take any preseason statistics seriously.

I won't start to pass judgement on the defense until they face the offensively challenged Ravens on September 10th.

Vanilla or not, you'd think they's be able to do a better job in containing this not so terrible trio. I'm not upset about the loss. The Colts dropped one to the Cowgirls as well, but they only allowed 196 total passing yards to a much better QB trio of Tony Romo, M. Moore, and Brad Johnson. Had the Bengals allowed 300 yards or less, I wouldn't be so worried. 500 yards is more than a bit troubling to me.

The Horse is dead stop beating it. It is only the preseason people I would rather this happen now then in the Regular season Game. there Are there things to work out yes but more importantly is their time to work them out Yes .

IMHO this horse is far from dead J24. This nag of a horse is alive unfortunately, and just got it's butt handed to it last night.

Yeesh, now billy snaps. I'm glad I'm going on vacation before the "WERE DOOOMD 0-16 HERE WE CMOE!!!" threads start (I give it until Sunday afternoon).

All I can say is this: if we're doomed, so are the preseaon megafavorite Patriots, who gave up 173 yards on the ground to the Bucs in their first preseason game. So I suppose we'll be in good company.

Yep can't draw too much of a conclusion from a 1st preseason game.

That said, that defense looked an awful lot like it did last year - the #'s were very similar to what they gave up.

I think it's a coaching problem myself. Breshnahan has never done anything for me, much like Paul Alexander. His schemes are smoke and mirrors, soft, and rely way too much on the big play or INT.

C'mon Hoosier, you've seen me snap, and this is far from it. I will say I'm alarmed by the numbers, and that's all I got to go on because I wasn't able to catch the game on TV due to getting off work long after the kickoff. I hate it when they kick off out here at 4:30 PM!

BTW...how do you rate going on a vacation!?!

Until Chucky leaves I can't see this defense having a major improvement. Frasier had us improving, but Marvin disagreed with his scheme. So now we play way too much zone that leaves recievers wide open underneath and over the middle. I'm tired of it being the personel. We can't blitz, we can't stop the run, and we can't cover.

I'm basing this on the past 3 years. This year could be different, I just don't see a reason that it would be with mastermind Chuck behind the clipboard.

I pretty much agree with this. Bres has had some bad luck (odell+Pollack) and has had some stinkers like Tory James and, to a lesser extent, Simmons, who just either didn't try or couldn't perform at the same high level.

Bres has to get this LB group to perform at a very high level. The run D will be he achilles heel for this unit if Brooks and the crew cannot make plays.

I wasn't happy with the running game (yards per carry) last year, Perry is never going to help, Rudi and Kenny W got a year older, Rudi took a lot of pounding last year, and we've got a lot of questions on the OL.

So...despite defensive concerns....I voted for the running game.

A highly efficient running game can (obvious, I know, but it bears re-stating in this context) make your defense look a LOT better

How about the attitude in our defense, We have the talent but do we have The IT , defense is more about attitude and charisma then Talent and I hate to say this but I do not see that in this D just yet. If we get that our beloved Bengals will be fine if not look for yet another dismal year for this team.

Good point J24. I haven't seen "IT" since the days of David Fulcher and Bill Bergey!

the problem is two fold. the d line and lbs do not bring consistant pressure to the qb and offensive backfield. knowing that, bratowski and marvin decide to "borrow" from the secondary and play zone coverage. the zone should give the DL and LB more time to get the pressure or sack. borrowing is problem 1.

if the corners play bump and run or play tight in man coverage, the receiver eventually wins the matchup because the pocket is not disrupted, this is why we see so much zone in the bengals defense. the idea is for the secondary to read and react and force pass breakups and interceptions NOT and i repeat NOT for the DL and LBs to get pressure on the pocket.

This is not be design but is being dictated by the personnel on the line and in the l-backers.

read and react is problem 2.

the front 7 on the Bengals D is weak in pass rush. The secondary is average in take aways and breakups. the real fix would be to dump ineffecient john thornton and bryan robinson then bring in some talent. but it hasn`t happened yet. thornton is a bust. he never made the transition to the next tier from the Titans. Robinson was priced right for what he is but shouldn`t be starting on a championship defense. odell is gone and so is pollack and there you go.

this is why the pass defense will suffer. we patched the secondary with talent but need more for the rush.

I believe there has been a bit of an upgrade to the D-line with Allen and Myers in there but I am not sure that they will be able to make a big difference with the rest of the group being a "proven commodity". In other words I don't know if they will be enough to make up that half-second to one second difference in getting to the QB that this team so sorely misses. If there is such a stat, I'll bet that this defense leads the league in completions allowed on 3rd and 5+ yards. We seem to do well enough on 1st and 2nd down but 3rd down kills us.

I've taken two trips in the last 30 days. The first was 8 drunken days in Cabo San Lucas...followed a week later by a 7 day trip home to the sober hinterland where I visited my beloved FamilyOnFire. BTW, nice weather you guys are having. ( Hell might be hotter, but I'm pretty sure it has less humidity.) Long story short, due to my absence I've missed quite a bit of panty bunching.

Without pointing fingers I say we blame the panic on the heat, and speak no more of it.
