ArmyBengal Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 Per Bengals.comWASHINGTON SWITCH: Bengals wide receiver Kelley Washington, a restrcited free agent, has switched his representation from Drew Rosenhaus to Chad Speck of Knoxville, Tenn. The Bengals and Washington are in an interesting situation. With the Bengals set with Johnson, Houshmandzadeh and Chris Henry, the Bengals might be able to get a third-round pick if another team pursues him and the Bengals don't match. I would take another third round pick in a heartbeat for him !!! He doesn't play special teams. Can you say buh-bye ?? Build the D, BUILD THE DAMN D !!!WHODEY !!! Quote
Stripes Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 I doubt we'll get a third rounder for him, but if the offer comes up, then Hell yes I'd be all over that. Quote
ShulaSteakhouse Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 Hell a 4th rounder would work - then again, whattya do if Henry is suspended for 2-3 games? (doubt it will make a difference)I think the pick is awarded by the league? So isn't that why it's not a done deal if he isn't matched? (as far as which round the compensation is rewarded). Quote
kingwilly Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 Seeing the squirrel migrate for a 3rd or 4th round pick would be a luxury, especially with the way Walter has stepped up when called upon. While I have not been the biggest Walter supporter in the past, he has game and gives 100% and don;t forget about Tab Perry, our KR, Slot back, WR, gunner and potential TE/SS extraordinaire! Quote
ArmyBengal Posted January 11, 2006 Author Report Posted January 11, 2006 He was drafted in the third and if we don't match an offer made, then we get the compensation pick. This should be a no brainer regardless of Henry due to the production of Walter and God knows I would love to see what Tab could do if given the chance. Depth is a good thing and how nice would it be to have another day one pick ?? Just trying to find anything to look to the brighter side of things !!!WHODEY !!! Quote
ShulaSteakhouse Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 No one's criticizing or disagreeing - would love to get a 3rd round pick for him - although I'm sure it'll more or less be more like an extra early 4th rounder - but you can obviously still find an impact player for a role at that spot in the draft. NJ29 Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 Think of what Marvin has been able to do with the third and fourth round picks during his tenure, plus the prospect of getting Tab more playing time, and I think that it is a no brainer to let him go. Quote
KRUNKJUICE Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 Can anyone say Donte' Whitner? Quote
turningpoint Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 I'd take a 7th round pick... hell we could of had matt cassell as our 2nd year qb backup going into this offseason.then there wouldn't be a qb problem here.Think of what Marvin has been able to do with the third and fourth round picks during his tenure, plus the prospect of getting Tab more playing time, and I think that it is a no brainer to let him go.actually quit honestly IMO he really hasn't done much...right now his 1st we all want gone, his 2 lb's really aren't proving to be what he thought or else why did he spend our 1st 2 picks in this past years draft on lb's?and well henry has great promise, but hell right now he's in a court battle for having drugs on him. TJJackson Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 One unanswered question: do we really and truly want to make a qualifying offer to KW? I could not find the numbers for 2006, but take a look at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/artic...-2005Mar23.htmlfor 2005 info. 2006 should be a bit higher, I'd expect.Do we really want to make an offer to KW for almost 700k? I realize that we can cut him and etc and thereby he costs us "nothing", but while the offer is on the table (or signed, which he might do when he realizes demand for his services will be at best limited) it is counted against salary cap.....thereby somewhat limiting what we can do in FA.I personally think it'd be best to negotiate a pre draft trade for (at best) a 5th round conditional pick to a team outside the division. That way, both teams minimize their risk. Quote
walzav29 Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 Henry won't be suspended because it's his 1st offense (see Charles Rogers). I say yipeee if they get a 3rd rounder for Washington. If Marvin can straighten Henry out he looks explosive! Quote
Riagogogoindanati Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 BYE K-DUB.........................HELLO AJ HAWK.I CAN ONLY HOPE. Quote
TJJackson Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 I don't see AJ Hawk falling that far, nor do I see us taking a linebacker early Quote
Riagogogoindanati Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 I KNOW.................I WAS ONLY HOPING. Quote
derekshank Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 Bobby Carpenter, maybe... not Hawk. He'll be a Packer. But LB is not our need. If we go any other way than SS or DT I'll be extremely dissapointed. Quote

More power to them! Walter and Henry are just fine thanks. Here's your 2005 division champs t-shirt and buh-bye!Use the extra pick to, you guessed it - BUILD THE DAMN D !!! Quote

That way, both teams minimize their risk. Two points: first, $700K is chump change in football terms. Tendering him is a no-brainer.Second: Kelly is a restricted free agent, emphasis on free agent. If we don't tender him, he becomes an unrestricted free agent, and you cannot trade an unrestricted free agent. I am not sure if you can negotiate for compensation less than the tender. I don't believe so, but in any case the bengals would have little incentive to do so. (A more likely scenario would be one in which the Bengals sign him to the one-year tender and then trade him.)It is also possible, tho I don't consider it likely, that the Bengals willl slap a higher RFA tender on him, which would give us a higher pick if we declined to match an ooffer. They did this last year with Rudi, tendering him the top offer for his position, which would have brought a first round pick if he got an offer and the bengals didn't match. Quote
derekshank Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 I don't mind Kelley Washington staying on the team... I just don't see it happening... and if I have a choice between keeping him and getting a 3rd round pick... I'll take the 3rd round pick every damn time. The 3rd round is still the first day... and we've gotten players like Landon Johnson and Chris Henry in the 3rd rounds the last couple years. Give me a 3rd round Safety! Quote
HoTbOy Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 Let him walk, he's been on the team for 3 years now and let a rookie take his spot, he was not doing something right if he was a 4th option. A 3rd would be but a 4th seems more realistic. PLEASE Marvin get a safety.. Quote

Agreed. I may be the last living K-Dub supporter, but he's lost his role on this team, and Tab Perry is likely to make a push for a bigger role as a wideout. That said, offer the tender and see what happens. The amount of cap funds temporarily tied up aren't worth talking about and won't resrict anything the Bengals attempt to do in free agency due to the cap space they have. Quote
BengalByTheBay Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 Am I the only one who doesn't see any downside to this? I think we should tender to him, the worst possible outcome of which (from the general tenor of conversation here) would be that we have him for one more year at 700K. If somebody matches and we get a decent pick as a result, good I would then agree with most of you here. If not, I don't see any problem with having the depth at WR that we had this season -- I think it's a good thing. Say what you want about KW, he can catch TD's when he plays. For the number of catches and limited action he has seen, his production is pretty good. Yeah, I think his antics are pretty ridiculous, but let's not lose sight of the forest here, it's a nice luxury to have IMO. Quote

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't object to have Kwash around for one more year; he served ably when called upon, and I thought looked better than in past seasons, and Henry didn't help himself any with the dopey dope business. But he's a luxury at a deep position, as you note, and an extra day 1 pick wouldn't do anything to hurt our chances of improving the D. Quote
