The one thing that is quite obvious

We must put some serious pressure, early and often, on Peyton Manning in the pocket! If he's allowed to just stand in there and calmly get his reads on coverages, while waiting for recievers to get open in the creases as he did Monday night against the decimated Patriots defense, they will win the battle of the clock, (time of possession) and thus the game.

I fear that much more than their running game with James or their improved, but not unbeatable defense.

BTW, IMHO the Colts are not off the "schnied" as Chris Berman refers to, by beating the shell of a former stout Patriots defense. They've lost so many key players to injuries that it's nearly a mere practice squad!

Manning's line is so great, nobody ever has consistent success putting pressure on him. I don't think we will be able to do that, so I think we will have to keep the focus on defense on stopping Edgerrin James. I am sure they will score their points on us, we just have to keep pace on offense and get some key turnovers to win it.

Early pressure? Often??? Billy you know damn well we'll be lucky to get a little pressure on him during the whole game!!! Not only do they have a talented line but Manning has a lightning fast release...

what Im wondering is who do we double cover?? Wayne or Harrison? Ratliff and Stokely will be an intriquing matchup as well...

IMO, the biggest key to getting those turnovers is pressure!

No I don't know that! We match up well versus Indy!

I didnt say we didnt match up against them ..

Im saying if you want to put pressure by bllitzing he'll eat us alive.

If you rely on our DE's thats not a pretty picture ...

We have to outscore them in a shootout...

And I didn't say blitzing, although an occasional one will be done. Hell, I say it'll be required! (Preferably blindsided ones that he doesn't see or hear coming and he just gets absolutely DRILLED brutally from behind like a Filipino cabana boy in a gay porno!) :o:crutches:

I'm saying the the defensive front four of the Bengals will need to raise the level of their play, and penetrate Indys pocket by simply beating their blockers more consistently than they done in their play up to this point. It may or may not be so easy due to the alleged level of "greatness" their line truly possesses.

Now, wheather he eats anything "alive" remains to be seen. I feel if you hit him hard a time or two, he's just not the same QB he is when he's not being leveled. Tonight's NE/Indy game was the first I've seen between the two teams where the Pats weren't consistently making him throw the ball earlier than he wanted to. He never really even took a single good shot while in the pocket that I saw.

My point is simply this...if the Bengals can get to Manning early in the game with a good shot/hard sack or two, especially with our fans screaming and yelling, his effectiveness will be greatly reduced, and our chances for victory greatly increased! If he's allowed the time to throw as he was by the Pats tonight, we won't get the ball enough to out score them. Oh...IMHO. Your opinion may vary.

Another thing that will help...Bengals' secondary is one of the best in the league. There, I have said it. We simply need to accept the fact that we are damn fine back there and figure that Harrison et al will have their hands full against O'Neal et al. That match-up will be phenomenal all four quarters in two weeks. I cannot wait for that game and am thrilled that it is the game I am able to get to for my yearly return to Cincy for a Bengals game.

On defense, teams have been countering Manning by dropping 7 into coverage and only rushing 4...which is the big reason James is having such a year. As Manning said last night in his pregame interview with Irvin, he's checking out of passes and just handing the ball off since the other teams are defensing the pass so agressively. I think the bengals have a good enough secondary that we can keep another guy up close to defend the run and pressure the QB but the secondary is really going t have to be on its game or we wil just get the worst of both worlds.

On offense, Colts are vulnerable to the vertical passing game. Saw that early last night, saw it a couple weeks ago vs. the Rams. Bengals need to go deep early and often and get some points. My gut says this is going to be another game like last year's second Cleveland...

I trust that Marvin & Chuck will come up with a good game plan, because I sure as hell can't think of one. Teams have been relatively successful taking Manning away, but that allows them to control the game with Edge and their much improved defense. Manning has morphed from a gun slinger to a game manager, which I believe is much more dangerous. He has basically become Tom Brady of years past. So, what's the answer? Try to win a shootout? It's possible, but you may just get Carson killed in the process.

On paper, the Bengals have no business winning this game. BUT, I'm picking them on faith alone. I have faith that Marvin will find away. Heck, I bet New England had a good game plan, they just didn't have the horses to pull it off. I'm sure ML will be breaking that game down about a million times.

Watching Peyton take control of the entire offence is an amazing thing to witness, the accuracy in which he makes his reads is incredible. That's why I think the best way to stop him is to do what Baltimore did against him in week 1 and show him defensive alignments that he can't read. We'd just have to do a better job then the Ravens did. I know that would take a lot of work, but we have 2 weeks to figure something out. Anyways just my 2 cents.

***Slightly off topic, not intending to hijack.***

I'm coming down from Toronto Canada to see the game and I really don't think I could have picked a better week to visit PBS; except maybe the AFC Championship Game. :sure: If anyone thinks they might have a little extra food to spare in exchange for some Canadian beer on gameday, please PM me. My friend and I don't know anybody in Cincy to hook up with, but we'd really like to take part in some good ol' Bengals Tailgating.

Billy, you're just talking crazy if you think the Bengals line will get pressure on Peyton. And the secondary is good, but the Colts' wide receivers and tight ends are pretty damn near the best. There are a lot of questions for this game, and I think the Bengals need some kind of help that you can't plan for, like an unexpected call or turnover of the sort that keeps momentum for the Bengals. Also, do you guys think the Bengals would win a shootout with The Colts?

Yeah, what he said. Take your chances with the Colt running game. Even if you bleed the final score will be lower than in a pure shootout. On offense the Bengals should attempt a balanced attack but take plenty of shots with the deep passing game.

Manning didn't face any pressure last night and the Pats depleted secondary was pretty much helpless to cover with so much time to throw.

The Bengals secondary will fare better vs. pass but it's virtually impossible to match the personnel of their spread since most of their plays are called w/ James in a single-back set and Dallas Clark either slotted, h-backed, or tight at the line. The biggest WR matchup problem should be w/ Tory James and the cushion he'll have to give against most likely Wayne but Harrison at times too.

Of course, James keeps pulling through big time.

Stokely in the slot should be coverable by Keiwan or Bauman but I'd be surprised if the Bengals don't get a lot more of Wayne and Clark in the slot than Stokely to try to test the nickel and dime backs with more size or speed than Stokely.

It looks like it will be almost entirely no huddle, too, which will further force the personnel issue.

Madden sounded like he nailed what the run game is about....at least a big part of it for the Colts. He called the Pats defense for being able to get the "hard edge" by turning the OLB in the 3-4 upfield to a spot when the Colts stretch run James either way, forcing him to cut upfield or stretch farther.

I doubt the Bengals in their 4-3 alignment will have the success the Pats did in forcing this on James because they will rely more on the DE to do this and James should have no problem getting past the pressure to the spot. The Bengals LBs are gonna have to show up fast and furious to try to keep James from reeling off several long runs IMO.

The Colts look like they will score beaucoup points but they might be more inclined to go with the run more....straight up the middle also with James... which will chew up more clock and lower the score. somewhat.

B) I hate saying this, but I'm liking our chances against the Colts. Nobody gave us a snowballs chance in hell against the Chiefs last year either, and that one didn't turn out too bad.

As to the pressure provided by the D line ........ even if Manning can be made to throw before he wants to; I like our secondarys' chances at adding to their int total. Everybody is focusing on Indys' offense, but its their defense that has actually won a couple of these games for them. Giving our offense a shorter field to work with will help immensely. For our part, we've got to do better in the redzone.

Turnovers and special teams is going to play a major part in the outcome of this game. ( figured it was time for a cliche )

Honestly I'd have to give them the edge on both sides of the ball. I'd also have to say that we've played ( and beat ) better defenses than they have had to face so far.

We're an underdog at home ................. :sure: I like it :cheers:

off topic - hey billy your case for moving to the UK just got stronger we have the colts bengals game live :D

I think it will be a hard game of that there will be no doubt as to if we can pressure manning well that will be hard to call so far we have hardly managed to get pressure on anybody especally with a 4 man rush and taking a saftey or corner off to rush could hurt us if it gets picked up so i really dont see much 5-6 man rushes. Its gonna be 4 man with the odd extra man rush and attempt to do what no one has done so far this season and contain manning.

if it comes down to a shootout i think it will be about even both teams have 2 great and 1 good WR and both teams have a good back but we have the up on the running game with perry can the colts D deal with a change of pace we will see in about 2 weeks.

Overall I am gonna sit on the fence on this one and expect that we may well lose it then if we win it will feel all the more sweet as it goes back to that any given sunday mentality which makes this sport so damn exciting.

just my 0.02pence all the way from the welsh valley's :sure:
