membengal
"GEORGETOWN, Ky. _ No. 80 resurfaced during warmups before Sunday’s workout, indicating that the Bengals have most likely cleared wide receiver Peter Warrick for his first practice with the club since the middle of last season.Injured players don’t wear their jerseys, but Warrick came on the field here at Georgetown College wearing his black No. 80 and carrying his helmet, a strong sign that he has been taken off the training camp physically unable to play list and plans to participate in the 4 p.m. workout.Warrick said last week he wouldn’t take a pay cut, so the Bengals must be ready to assume liability for his $2.2 million salary as they gauge the strength of his troubled knee."Well, the die is cast. For those who argue the Bengals are cheaper than cheap, this is a definite gamble that could be a $2 million dollar waste. I like it, if indeed he really is going to practice though, I think it is worth the gamble. Then again, it ain't my money.
CantStop85
What else would we exactly do with the $2.2 million? It's not like we have to sign anybody else barring injury and David Pollack. The contract is up at the end of the year. The only real waste could be a roster spot.

Well, whatever savings might have been made from letting him go likely would have gone to locking up some of their vets who are coming up on expiring contracts. That said, I am glad they are going to give it a shot with him, but it is still a sizable gamble. ArmyBengal
With the players needing to be resigned for next season, I'd say there are plenty of ways to spend 2.2 million. This is a huge gamble to me, but agree that if he comes back and plays well, it's a gamble well worth taking.WHODEY !!!

If he's still good to go for Friday night then we should feel very hopeful he'll be ok this season.Actually that salary is either going right back in Brown's pocket or to Warrick no matter what they do with him. That money has already been put into this year's cap.Anyone they re-sign for next year goes to NEXT YEAR'S CAP any ways so it's not as if it really matters.Frankly I could care less how much money Brown loses he has plenty of it and $3 million to increase your chances of having a winning season is nothing at this point after 15 years of cheapness. But yeah it's a good gamble IMO for the reasons above and the fact his doctor cleared him to practice. This is HUGE if he stays healthy...crossing fingers....
andybren
Activating Warrick is a gamble, but then so is signing a 20 year old kid to a five year, multi-million dollar contract of any sort. I'm just glad they're going to let the guy play. I'd hate to see PDub's final days on the team (if he's cut or traded) to be spent in street clothes trading insults in the media. If he can't go and needs to be released, at least it the whole world will know it's for football reasons.
walzav29
I'd prefer for him tp play. I think he will be a better 3rd receiver than Kelly Washington.
alleycat
Here's the Bengals.com article. Good to see that Askew is coming back, as well.'Dub is back' 8-14-05, 7:25 p.m. BY GEOFF HOBSONGEORGETOWN, Ky. - That's the headline Bengals wide receiver Peter Warrick wanted when he returned to practice.No. 80 re-surfaced for his first practice with the club since the middle of last season in an afternoon workout here at Georgetown College that began with him running through plays in a walk-through and then catching balls from the quarterbacks in a receivers line. Warrick, who felt he was ready last week and bristled when head coach Marvin Lewis and club president Mike Brown didn't agree with their doctors and kept him shelved, expressed relief at being taken off training camp's physically unable to play list.“Every night I go to sleep, and I’d sit back and wonder whether I’m going to be here, whether I’m going to be there,” Warrick said. “Now today, I’m proud to say I’m still here.”Warrick said last week he wouldn’t take a pay cut, so the Bengals must be ready to assume liability for his $2.2 million salary as they gauge the strength of his troubled knee. Lewis said the only thing that changed between Tuesday night's decision not to play him and Saturday night's decision to play him was strictly timing. Warrick missed Monday's two practices last week to get cleared by his own doctor, James Andrews, in Birmingham, Ala., taking him out of the pre-season opener in Lewis' mind. But now that he could go Sunday in the first practice of the week, he's expected to play in Washington Friday night.“It was a matter of timing,” Lewis said. “We tried to make the best decision for the football team and Peter. When we got in a certain point in the week, we weren’t going to put him in the game, so it didn’t really matter. That’s why today was a better day.”Also activated off the camp PUP list Sunday were a pair of young defensive linemen, second-year tackle Matthias Askew and rookie end/tackle Jonathan Fanene. WHO DEY AGAIN?
A healthy P-Dub in the slot could put this offense in the elite status. I think some of you P-Dub hater's have short memories. He was making some big time 3rd down grabs a couple of years ago bailing Noodle-armed Kitna out of trouble.FYI, CantStop85's signature rocks! :player:

No one is "hating" P-Dub. ***damn but I hate that phrase. Can we retire it yet? If someone notes that they understand that Warrick has been damaged goods, that is not "hating", it is "observing". It perfectly acceptable to observe that Warrick has been hurt (and Perry for that matter) without being a "hater". Jesus.Look, this team is immeasurably better if Warrick is healthy and can be close to what he was in 2003. Every single person who calls themselves a Bengals fan has to be hoping that. Same with a healthy Perry. It's good that Warrick is back. I can still note that the Bengals are taking a gamble (a worthwhile one in my estimation) without being a "hater".Grumpy 34-year-old man rant over. schweinhart
It'll be a sight to see what he can do vs. Deadskins. If he's anywhere close to the quickness on his stops and cuts that he's had in the past, no other slot WR on the team can get more separation.Housh makes a good tall target out of the slot and was reliable and under control last year, but a healthy P-Dub adds a whole dimension to the passing game that will help CP keep the chains moving.Glad to see he got cleared to practice, regardless of what eventually happens. The_Next_Big_Thing
Ok, so he was allowed to put on a uniform, he still hasn't doe squat, and he will not make the team. Pdub is still, and will always be, A BUST.

Both were drafted fourth overall I think (could be wrong), and neither has produced up to that standard. Smith has been good, and therefore I think escapes the "bust" label. Warrick is a WR, and players of that position drafted that high are expected to produce huge numbers, so I think he could be called a bust, but not a huge bust. He is a contributor. membengal
Sounds like the team got a huge lift from his return to practice. That's a part of the equation that has been hard to measure. His teammates clearly love him, and getting him back at whatever level he is at sounds like it is worth a ton.Really, really hopeful about this. Especially if he can team with Ratliff on punt returns. And, moving the chains on third down and threatening in the red zone should have just gotten easier. Crossing all fingers this morning.http://www.bengals.com/press/news.asp?iCur...=0&news_id=3067"He's our Vick". Nice quote CJ.
HoosierCat
Excellent news. Now ]this I regard as a sign that the bengals are in "win now" mode. No more pushing off vets over money and relying on some rookie miracle. Been a while. Nice to see. Props to Mikey and the front office for doing the right thing. I agree. And from Friday's game, we need that possession receiver, because no one fulfilled that role -- including drop a pass in the redzone Washington. IckeyShuffle
Membengal said it, the team seems to have gotten a psychological lift according to the quotes with the return of Warrick. If Chad, Palmer and Willie love him and are amped that he is back, then shouldn't we be? I'm not the biggest of Pdub fans, but he is talking a "team" game now and in open space, he is still lethal. If we win on 3rd downs because of his cuts, and if we win field position because of his punt return skills (and maybe a couple taken to the House), and if his presence on the field creates mismatches everywhere thinning out team's nickel and dime packages, then we are poised to win right now. 10 wins this year is that much more within our grasp. A healthy Perry and Warrick in the open flats, TJ and KW being strong on the slant and out patterns, CJ and Henry stretching it deep means that the pressure is on Palmer to make decisions and make the throws. He certainly didn't do that against the Pats. Friday night should be interesting.welcome back Pdub, I'm for ya.

Most of the relevant points have already been made so I'll limit this one to pointing out that the delay has been explained and it was little more than the Bengals continuing to show caution as they concentrated on preparing the entire team for the 1st preseason game. No shadowing figures were seen on the grassy knoll. Financing a fresh paint job for Mike's Chevy Lumina doesn't seem to be the motive behind the caution. Nobody is picking on the rich kid. Order has been restored as even the doubters can now agree....winning seems to matter.
