Looking to 2006

Recommended Posts

Well the 2005 draft has come and gone, we've had some highlights

" With the 17th overall pick of the 2005 NFL draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select David Pollack De, University Georgia ".

And some Lowlights

" With the 153rd selection, the Cincinnati Bengals select Adam Kieft OT, Central Michigan "

Well with the hi's and lo's comes the look to the future, that inspires all draftnicks' worldwide. The Chance to once again enter the breach and dare to become better than you already are, To once again Carpe Diem, or go fishing for some carp, or whatever fish you like, but regardless, Here are some top players certain to make a name for themselves during the 2005-2006 college football season, worth keeping an eye on.

# 1. Mathias Kiwanuka De, Boston College - 6'7 260 lbs. A tremendous pass rusher, returned for his senior season.

# 2. Gabe Watson DT, Michigan - 6'4, 335 lbs. Very gifted interior d-lineman. Very stout at the point of attack, think, Ted Washington and Gilbert Brown put together in their prime.

# 3. Chad Greenway LB, Iowa - 6'3 240 lbs. Kiper actually got this one right, if he had came out this year, He would have been a top 5 pick. Excellent against the run and pass.

# 4. Kwakou Robinson DT, Virginia - 6'3 340 lbs. Another massive interior lineman, very stout against the run, and can push the pocket.

# 5. Martin Nance WR,Miami (ohio) 6'4 210 - If he returns to full health, he'll likely be the first wide receiver taken.

# 6. A.J. Hawk LB, Ohio State - 6'2 230 lbs. - Very instinctive runner, should make Ohio State linebackers a pedigree again.

# 7. Jimmy Williams CB/S, Virginia Tech. - Great size and speed, can play every position in the secondary. Would have been a first rounder this year at corner or safety.

# 8. Darnell Bing FS/SS U.S.C. 6'2 220 lbs. - Heart and soul of the U.S.C. defense, makes plays all over the field.

--- These guys all stick out to me, but the '06 draft will probably be remembered for 2 things, Matt Leinart, and the offensive tackles !

Offensive lineman that are all but already first rounders barring injury include.

1. Winston Justice ,U.S.C.- possible supplementary draft.

2. Eric Winston - Miami FLA. he had an achilles heal injury and was still considered a top lineman if he declared.

3. D'Brickshaw Ferguson - Virginia, would have been a top ten offensive lineman this year. Most draftnicks kept his name on their draftboards even after the deadline hoping he would re-consider.

4. Jon Scott, Texas - another huge lineman from texas.

5. Max Jean Gilles,Georgia- Can play Guard or Tackle

6. Marcus McNeil , Auburn- this guy is Big, and I know BIG !

7. Andrew Whitworth - L.S.U.- Great Wingspan almost impossible to get a sack on him.

Worth Mentioning list..

Abdul Hodge, Will Blackmon, Reggie Bush, Omar Jacobs, Darryl Tapp, Rodrique Wright, Haloti Ngata, Lawrence Maroney, Fred Roach, and last but not least Mercedes Lewis - next year's premier tight end.

Jesus, don't you guys take a break?  ^_^  ^_^

I'm betting there's a few 2006 mock drafts in the works at this very moment!

And for those really hard up to get a head start on next April, gbn's 1st 2006 mock draft

http://www.gbnreport.com/2006projection.html

Our pick? FS Nate Sally.

Oh man!!! There IS!!

Myself...I'm ready to get off this "draft horse" for a while. It was a fun ride though!

I'm willing to bet Chris has the 2009 draft board. Seriously. I bet he does. Without a doubt. A draft board. For 2009. :(

You better look to 2006 because when you draft like this you end up drafting first. Before all of the rah rah We can't do any thing wrong chorous chimes in Think about this draft. They drafted the best DE in the draft but ,they say "were going to make him a LB- He runs a 4.81 40 thats good for a DE thats slow for a LB -The reason they want to replace Kevin Hardy is he is too slow. They draft a MLB and then say "Landon Johnson is our Starting MLB".So they basically got 1 starter out of the whole draft. When you draft a player you can sign him for 4 to 6 years. You only get 7 rounds, one pick per pound. So whoever you draft If they are able to start after 3 years on the roster You have to pay them the big bucks or they are gone after the 4th year. There are 22 starters plus a kicker and punter a long snaper kick and punt returner that are specialist. In other words you need to come with 7 starters every year.Thats 28 in 4 years.Yes you have players that re-sign for a long term contract. The point is if you dont try to find starters with every pick you are a fool.I rember Dave Shula using third round picks for back up players.Thats not the way you draft.I have heard people say take the best athelete WRONG!! If you have Joe Montana and Dan Marino on your roster and you need a tackle and have a choice of a good starter at tackle or John Elway who are you going to pick. You fill your need at tackle or neither QB gets any passes off.

Hell, no! Shoot, earlier today I was at my local hospital's maternity ward checking out prospects for the 2026 draft. There were a couple big kids who have DT written all over them, and I saw one not half an hour old yet who took a pacifier and tossed it over three rows of bassinets right into the biohazard disposal can. Franchise QB right there, baby...literally!

You only get 7 rounds, one pick per round.

 So then the Bengals must have stolen some freebie picks last season. If memory serves, there were multiple rounds with multiple picks in them in 2004.

So whoever you draft, If they are able to start after 3 years on the roster You have to pay them the big bucks or they are gone after the 4th year.

This may be the case with some players experiences in the NFL, but I don't think it's some "Etched in Stone" guideline for all players by any means!

There are 22 starters plus a kicker and punter a long snaper kick and punt returner that are specialist. In other words you need to come with 7 starters every year.Thats 28 in 4 years. Yes you have players that re-sign for a long term contract. The point is if you don't try to find starters with every pick you are a fool.

That aptly describes the "Best Case Scenario" for almost any team going into the draft each and every year. I mean what team goes into the draft hoping for less!?! None do.

About the "coming with 7 starters" comment, I must ask you, does any team in the NFL come with 7 starters every single year as you stated? I don't think even the mighty Patriots, Eagles, or any other playoff team from last season boast of doing so with annual type regularity in the past. Nor do I expect to see any teams start to achieve what is in my opinion your slightly unrealistic standards! You'd need Nostradamus himself on your draft team to pull off anything remotely close to that!

I remember Dave Shula using third round picks for back up players.Thats not the way you draft.

None of us here could ever forget all those wonderful, heartwarming "Golden Kodak Moments" we shared with David. But if you're looking for a lot of guy's here to come jumping in defense of Shula's drafting philosophy, go grab a "Snickers" right now! You may have a little wait on your hands!

I have heard people say take the best athelete WRONG!! If you have Joe Montana and Dan Marino on your roster and you need a tackle and have a choice of a good starter at tackle or John Elway who are you going to pick. You fill your need at tackle or neither QB gets any passes off

Well I've never really cared for it either, so you didn't hear it from me...ALTHOUGH...I do feel it must occasionally. No, no...that simply couldn't be! The drafting of the "Best Player Available" must absolutely work well for teams in the league. At least a reasonable percentage of the time! Otherwise why would so many Head Coaches/GM's/Owners regularly draft in this manner!?! These organizations, which may well be a majority of teams in this league, (I'm not sure) aren't collectively stupid year after year, after year, are they?

I honestly don't think they abide by it 100% of the time? At least not to it's letter. I'm of the opinion that this "BPA policy" is mostly employed by those teams at times when there is no real player on the board they feel can make an impact at a position of their need compared overall to the impact that the Best Player Available would make for them!?! So they pick him for his value alone!

I still don't care for it either, but I've come to accept it as I understand it to work as I described above. Whether that's accurate or not, I don't know. Can anyone really say?

I guess drafting Kieft is the lowlight for anyone who didn't see him on film or watch him play, or by someone who isn't looking to the future and realizing he is a guy who can step in if Willie hurts his knee again. He is better than Stacy Andrews right now.

Um, this isn't Kleft vs. Andrews. I believe ML said, in his post-draft comments, that he was happy because the Bengals now had good long-term prospects in house for right and left tackle.

Didn't anyone else read that?

Back, and to the left...

You put Omar Jacobs only on the worth mentioning list?? This guy threw 41 touchdown passes last year passed for 4002 yards with only four interceptions in the season and hes just worth mentioning at the bottom of the list. Watch out for this guy. He will be a dominent force next year.
