combatbengal
I’m not sure about the state of the Bengals going forward! I do believe the loss of Jay Gruden is an upgrade. We’re keeping our playbook and Hue Jackson stated that he wants to run the ball. If this side of the ball is going to get better, we need to improve our line and Green Ellis is not the answer to the run game.On Defense I think we downgraded. I don’t think Paul Guenther can lace Zimmers sneakers! The Vikings got a steal! We need better DB’s, and maybe a LB!! I didn’t see any improvement with Maualuga. Not sure how Atkins will be when he returns from that injury, I hope he’s awesome. I know we haven’t gotten to FA’s or the draft, but at this point, I don’t see us getting into the playoffs. The year the Steelers broke Palmers leg was our year! The year we had TJ, Johnson and TO was our year and we pissed that away. This season was our year with all the talent we had and we blew that!! With Free agency, we have around 24 million in cap space. We have 15 FA and I do believe we have to resign Michael Johnson! I also think Vontaze Burfict deserves a big contract extension. Once again Brandon Tate can go. I’d resign Vincent Ray, Andrew Hawkins and Taylor Mays. I really liked Dane Sanzenbacher but they didn’t use him that often and he was hurt a lot. Chris Crocker came in and did a pretty good job for us so I’d consider resigning him unless we find better in FA and the draft.Once again I'm not a football expert but if I were Mike Brown, I would have gotten rid of Gruden, promoted Marvin to GM and promoted Zimmer to HC! Oh well....
volcom69
I doubt Marvin wanted to be a GM anyways. We all love Zimmer, but how do we know if he is even going to be a great coach? He could be, but ill wait and see.I like the new DC. We will see how he works out, but he was Grudens right hand man. He was actually calling Nickle plays this year. I think the bengals did good by keeping him. Not to mention if he can get the defense to continue to play at a high level, even win a playoff game, and big games, then maybe we will be saying Zimmer who? I'm excited to see what else happens this offseason, but so far I'm good with these moves.
ArmyBengal
The offense will have a chance to get better and we get our answer of whether it was Gruden or Dalton. WIN.The defense losses Zimmer, but the guy Zimmer wanted to run his defense is running ours. DRAW.We have players to resign, but are not obligated to do so immediately. Dalton, Green, and Burfict are under contract. WIN.The schedule looks tough at this point in time, but this team hasn't taken a step back and still has FA and the draft. WIN.All the talk about Marvin leaving and Zimmer taking over as head coach can finally be put to rest. WIN.Yeah, i'm feeling pretty good about 2014. Oh well....Chad Johnson was the reason the team self destructed. If you read between the lines with what Peko and Whitworth have said this year, the locker room was filled with resentment and in house issues back then. You are entitled to your opinion, and we can agree to disagree.Guenther was Zimmer's right hand man! He came up with many of the formations and blitz packages. He was also the one on other end of Zimmer's headset giving Zimmer upstairs views and opinions.I think the potential is there to be even better next year! Yes, we have no control over what Brown and Lewis do, AND, more importantly, who ends up on IR as practices and games play out!Sit back and enjoy the ride combat!! princeton
I have great faith that they will make the next two playoffs, and lose in the first round both times.

I don't see it happening we have Gilberry who has played awesome we have hunt and we can find a 4th...I also think Vontaze Burfict deserves a big contract extension. He will have to wait one more year if I'm not mistaken because can't redo contracts until 3rd year is over.. again Brandon TateAgreed I feel like like sanzebacher was a better returner anywaysRest of it I was fine with too. cincyhokie
2014. The Season of the(lame)duck.Tough schedule. The team is still in tact with talent on both sides. Should be interesting to see what Hue can do with the offense. I really think if the interior of the O-line gets addressed, the sky is the limit. Not sure that will happen, though. ArmyBengal
I have absolutely zero reason to believe Cook will be replaced. He's signed through the 2015 season and the coaches love him.Weak link ?? Yep. Going anywhere ?? Nope.I would love to see them go Center in the 2nd round, but I don't think the coaches think they need to.I'm guessing of course, but don't see it happening.Alex Mack from the Browns ?? We all need to have a dream right ??Not happening either.
volcom69
Yep I agree Army if Cooks contract was up he might be gone, but coaches love him to much to just bench him. Ill be suprised if they move on from him.
ArmyBengal
I think they spend whatever dollars they have in extending players even though they don't have to immediately do so.While I would love to see make a splash with a guy like Alex Mack, there's no reason to believe they will.I also would love to see them make a move in the draft to get better quality, but don't see that either. All that being said, i'm still in camp optimism for 2014. kingwilly
Regarding Guenther, there is no reason yet to believe there will be fall off from the D. I feel confident, with the players returning from injury (Atkins, Lamur, Geathers, etc) this D will be stout. It will be interesting to see how Guenther handles personnel decisions. The D has been taking very good talent, and I hope that continues. I think the greatest impact for the D will be how much balance and efficiency Hue can pull out of this offense. The overall stats, while impressive and show progress from 2012, we all saw what happened when Gruden went throw happy. If Hue takes pressure off the D by being more consistent on offense, the D could be the nest in the NFL.I don't see 2014 as a lame duck year. It's a contract year, hoping for the best. Not sure that will happen, though.I'm less concerned about personnel than I am about consistent effort. The offense could be a lot better if some guys would come to play every play.I'm thinking of guys like Green and Gresham and Moobs. Guys who have the physical gifts and natural talent to be dominant players, but don't seem to be being pushed to be that guy. Hue strikes me as a lot more Zimmer-like in that regard. Can anyone see him having a conversation like the one Gruden had with Harrison on HK?I think we've got a hard case on offense now and it's about time. combatbengal
I'd like to see how Hue plans to address or fix the following:- Gresham either gets a 15 yard penalty for being stupid and undisciplined or the knucklehead turns the ball over in just about every game!- Whitworth is a great lineman but he seems to get a lot of penalties that help stall drives. - Green-Ellis never fumbled until he came to the Bengals- he's had five fumbles with four being losses. - O-line gave up 29 sacks and 47 QB hits this past season.- Dalton's throwing accuracy. He got better at the end of the season but he was throwing the ball way to high most of the season.

Jackson sticks to his guns concerning the run game.2. If they can keep key players off season ending IR.Knowing now how much of a key role Guenther played in Zimmer's program, I don't see a problem there. ArmyBengal
Again, knowing that Zimmer wanted Guenther to run his defense should be enough for the fans.He knows the players, has familiarity with the system, and should provide little drop off.Even if they do drop a handful of spots due to Zimmer leaving, it's still a top 10 defense. HoosierCat
I'd like to see how Hue plans to address or fix the following:- Gresham either gets a 15 yard penalty for being stupid and undisciplined or the knucklehead turns the ball over in just about every game!See what I wrote earlier. Gresham needs to someone to push him and Hue is a lot more "down in the trenches" than either of our last two OCs.- Whitworth is a great lineman but he seems to get a lot of penalties that help stall drives. Age and injury are catching up with him. The move to LG ought to be permanent, though the latest from Alexander is that they won't make the call until after FA and the draft. A lot will hinge on whether they can lure AC back.- Green-Ellis never fumbled until he came to the Bengals- he's had five fumbles with four being losses. He also carries the ball a ton more here than he did as a short yardage specialist in NE. Fumbles are going to happen. - O-line gave up 29 sacks and 47 QB hits this past season.A lot factored into this last season. Zeitler and Moobs need to play better. Cook needs to be upgraded. Whit, see above. Dalton needs to make better decisions. Playcalling needs to have more balance. We'll see how it shakes out.- Dalton's throwing accuracy. He got better at the end of the season but he was throwing the ball way to high most of the season.See o-line issue above. You saw the same thing if you were watching Brady Sunday. Give him time to set his feet and a lot of this goes away.
ArmyBengal
I finally got a chance to look at the Bengals free agents for 2014 and 2015.Funny thing I found is how they drafted in 2013, seemingly preparing for the losses of these two coming years.Once looking at that, I decided to look at the free agents for 2016 and OUCH do they need to look at things.2016 includes: Hall, Big Dre, Whit, Nelson, Cook, Geathers, Kirkpatrick, Zeitler, Pacman, Sanu, Still, Thompson, M. Jones, and Iloka.I think that's why CB is viewed as such a huge need for this draft and why OT shouldn't be far behind.DT and the safety spot also will need to be addressed with the OG spot as well. This team has a ton of starting guys coming due either THIS year or in the next two.If they can't bring Collins back, I think OT becomes a bigger need and I don't see Hawkinson or Fragel being the answer. So i'm going to go with CB in the first unless Collins leaves and then I will say OT in the first (Zack Martin maybe) and CB in the second.Safety needs to be addressed because even if Williams turns into Crocker jr., the depth is a concern for me.TE also can't be ignored with Alex Smith up now and Gresham next year. Maybe Charles gets moved permanently to TE ??Understanding that it's still early in the game, i'm about ready to take a stab at a mock draft.
