If Eifert was gone, I think they should have seriously considered trading down rather than draft Floyd

Early on Lap suggested that they would trade down if their guys were no longer there.Sounds like they were thinking the same thing.

-The Bengals had targeted Tavon Austin, Tyler Eifert and Eric Reid as their top three in the first round. Austin and Reid were gone and they were concerned that Chicago would take Eifert. Had that happened they probably would have taken Sharrif Floyd.

Can you imagine the howls of outrage if they'd taken DT in the first? If you thought Eifert raised a ruckus, taking Floyd after spending a second and third last year on two DTs who could barely even get on the field would have resulted in a nuclear meltdown.

Which would worry me,They ready move on from one picks last year? Feel like Peko is almost done? Plan B for Geno Atkins leaving >.<....Some things better left unthought about.

What I don't get is if They felt like Hunt & Bernard were also in their top 32 why not take one of them instead Floydd unless they felt he was just too much talent to pass on.

DT has been key for this defense. In past 2 years, Bengals' best defensive games have come when Pat Sims was healthy. I'm still surprised that a team with money allowed him to walk

Well, they have two newly drafted DTs from last year waiting in the wings. The Bengals obviously believe in those kids.

I'm guessing that was their ultimate plan when they drafted them. Let them take the first year to learn and get adjusted, and then put them in there while letting injury-prone and potentially higher-priced veterans walk.

What we're seeing now is that they are no longer drafting for NOW, but for a year or even more down the road.

"obviously believe" sounds too strong, if they would have drafted Floyd had Chicago taken Eifert. On the positive side, it's probably good that the Bengals don't "obviously believe" in Brandon Thompson, given that they do "obviously believe" in Rey Maualaga. maybe a little skepticism is a good thing.

Brandon Thompson does seem like a key to 2013.

Why is it too strong a term? If they didn't, then they would have made an effort to re-sign Sims. And yes, they do obviously believe in Rey. We don't have to like it, but their actions make that perfectly clear. As for them considering Floyd, that seems like nothing more than speculation.

FWIW Sims' departure seems to be more about Sims than anything else. The chatter has been that Pat was in Marvin's doghouse for work ethic and lengthy rehab issues. They weren't all that eager to bring him back last offseason and didn't bother this year. I'm not sure their feelings about Thompson played a role one way or another. As to whether Thompson is ready I can only say I hope so.

they couldn't count on Sims to play, but he seemed to make them much better when he did. so, he was a luxury rather than a staple.

ironically, they drafted depth so that they could afford to carry a luxury player like Sims. And he made them better, but then they let him walk even though they don't seem that wedded to his replacement. It defied logic.

Well done, Army.

Now you can get a fancy high-paying job and finally start paying the mods around here a regular salary cheers.gif

Thanks.

I was hoping Terry (B24) would hit it bigtime and be able to pay us mods so we wouldn't have to work our regular jobs anymore.

God knows I could spend 8 hours a day hanging around here looking and creating sh*t to discuss.

High paying job ?? Maybe someday. For now, i'm content continuing to learn and figuring things out.

Then again, having a pension coming in at age 43 makes doing that a little easier.

Thanks again !!!

The NFL will hold their annual Rookie Premier in LA. They event spotlights many of the players taken in the first two rounds. Several smaller activities have been held this week. Here are a few odds and ends that include Tyler Eifert and Gio Bernard.

"3) Cincinnati Bengals first-round pick Tyler Eifert is an athletic-looking human being. I know he was well-documented as the top tight end of his draft class, but I still see people sleeping on him ... he's an early Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate. Does Eifert believe he can make an instant statistical impact?

"I think so, yes," he replied, looking down at my anatomically inferior build. "I think my ability to pick up the offense, and especially with what the league is transforming to with the two tight ends. I'm in a good spot."

He ain't wrong."
