Is Dalton's Arm Strength an Issue?

I lost interest in the arm strength complaints last season when I saw Andy overthrow (but still complete) a bomb to AJ against the Rams. I also recall a few f**king lasers to Donald Lee and a touchdown laser to Simpson. There were other examples too I'm sure.

I'm good with what Dalton can do, he may not be a Dan Marino but he's what we've got and he's good enough.

Once again i really think all this comes about because the media dosnt have anything else to talk about.

Aye, it'll be due to a slow-news day

I love Dalton's arm strength underneath and outside of the pocket on short and mid-range passes. He throws an ok deep ball - it's just not that accurate and he relies on Green's ability to adjust and go up and get it. He's not going to throw pretty bombs like Palmer did to Chad, but, we'll see if and how he improves I guess, he definitely needs to, if he's going to be a long term guy (as Mike Brown is apparently not as high on him as others).

Not questioning, but did Mike Brown say something negative about Dalton that i'm not aware of ??

Everything i've seen to this point would indicate Dalton was also aware of that part of his game and has made efforts to improve it. If that turns out to be better this season, it would be great, but I don't think his ability to throw 70 yard bombs is going to make the difference in this team making it to the playoffs this season.

The improvement to the o-line, running game, and WR corp will...

.

I kind of agree, BUT it will play a part in 2 big ways.

#1 If he were able to complete those, it obviously gives you a quick score, and 7 pts for your strong defense.....or, if down late in the game, the ability to get down the filed in a play or 2 to possibly come from behind and win.

and

#2 It's the THREAT of him actually being able to do that. That would open the field up a little by the opposing safeties maybe having to play a little deeper. Last season there was virtually no threat of Dalton going deep, and no team was concerned about it. They all read the same scouting reports as the Bengals did prior to the draft, and outside of a couple of throws all season he didn't do much to change their opinion.

If he comes out throwing bombs this season, I think that will catch a lot of teams by surprise, and make them have to adjust their gameplan midgame.

This team needs more big plays to make the Playoffs again....plain and simple. They likely arent going to get it from the running game, because as solid as BGE might be, and how good he is around the goal line, he just isnt a threat to break a run 60 yards. You cant keep putting that much pressure on your Defense because your offense can only score 14 or 17 points.

I hope they call more downfield throws for Dalton, but I want to see him in the Pre-Season in game action, not in OTA's in shorts and a T-Shirt with plenty of time to throw because nobody is allowed to hit him.

But, I'm excited about this season......

Exactly I kinda worded The title wrong I was trying to say they shd now stfu about his arm after that throw lol

I helped out with the thread title.

More of what you were trying to say ??

On topic, I think Dalton knew he had things to work on and has done everything you could hope he would to this point in time to improve.

Without mini-camps, OTA's, camp and all other things that should have stunted his development last season, it's hard to complain.

This season should see a much more disciplined Dalton and quite frankly, I think he's going to suprise even more in 2012.

Arm Strength an issue ?? No, I still don't think so.

I wasn't really worried about his Arm Strength Gruden said last year the only reason they didn't work on his deep ball was because of the shortened off season program and fact they were installing a new offense...That this year they would have time to work on his mechanics to improve his deep ball...Not like you need a howitzer for arm to have a good deep ball look at brees...I think with Andys smarts & dedication it's going to be no issue at all.

I'm good with what Dalton can do, he may not be a Dan Marino but he's what we've got and he's good enough.

He's no Chad Pennington either "thank goodness"

Read that Dalton had a 50+ yd throw the other day. Probably updrafts and remnants of an east coast tropical storm aided it. Couldn't have done it on his own.

Dalton's got a lot of questions to answer.

1. His QB rating dropped as season progressed

2. his QB rating was very low at end of close games

3. his QB rating was very low against Baltimore and Pittsburgh.

could very well be due to poor play by his supporting cast, especially the OL which suffered as season progressed. but I still think that these are better questions than the deep ball. other than the Baltimore/Pittsburgh thing, I'm not reading anything about these questions

there's an old adage-- possibly from Paul Brown: "when the weather gets cold, your QB had better have a strong arm." I don't think that weather had much to do with Dalton's fade at end of year. in the only sub-40 degreee game, he actually did pretty well. But I am concerned that he wears out-- he threw a lot more balls last year than he ever did at TCU. but he's young, and maybe he'll grow into this. better footwork might also keep his arm sharper over the long haul of a 16 game season

1. and 3. are interrelated. Neither should be surprising or concerning. His rating dfropped becauase the schedule featured a first half full of less competitive teams and a second half filled with tough opponents (including Balti and Pitt). Going into last year, I think everyone believed that the Bengals needed to kick butt in the first half of the season because wins were going to be much harder to come by in the second half, which is exactly what happened. Experience and reps are the only answer here.

As for 2., I'm sure you can find bad throws or decisions by Dalton, but I think it has more to do with defenses focusing on covering Green in those situations and daring guys like Benson, Simpson and Gresham to beat them, which they often didn't. Hence the changing of the guard at RB and mega-scrum for No. 2 WR. And you're right, the o-line didn't help, either.

I'm going with teams knowing Green was the only viable receiving option, the oline not doing well at all, and Benson developing an issue with fumbling the ball like he hadn't previously. Green being the most important of them all. How about not having Shipley in the slot ??

I think the team did a lot of things right in the draft and added in FA as well.

The overall development of the team as a whole is going to help the things Dalton has to work on.

I'm not at a point that is concerning at all.

Bumping this thread based upon Dalton's comments after throwing the TD to Green last night:

“My arm feels great, and you can tell everybody that it’s not even close to what I’ve got if I need it,” Dalton said, via Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

I think he's just tired of hearing about it all the time. Hope he just continues to improve on it.
