Hue Jackson returns to the Bengals

Posted by Mike Florio on February 17, 2012, 3:00 PM EST

Apparently, the trade that sent Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer to the Raiders also included a coach to be named later.

The Bengals have announced that former Raiders head coach Hue Jackson has been hired. He’ll serve as an assistant coach helping the secondary and special teams.

“Hue is a tremendous addition to our staff,” Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said in a team-issued release. “I relied on Hue greatly when he was with us, and his success overall in the NFL, including being selected for a head coaching position, is well documented. He has expertise in all aspects of the game, and we are fortunate to have obtained his services.”

It looks a little like make-work for Jackson, whose past experiences primarily focused on the offensive side of the ball. According to his bio from his time at USC, Jackson worked with special teams in 1988 and 1989 at Pacific, in 1991 with the London Monarchs, and in 1991 at Cal State-Fullerton.

Jackson previously spent three years with the Bengals, from 2004 through 2006, as receivers coach.

First of all, Hue was the WR coach. That strikes me as very applicable experience to coach DBs, especially given Marvin's statement earlier this year that the D needs more turnovers.

Second, teams can always use help in Cincy.

I'm just glad Hue was willing. A lot of coaches coming off a head coaching job would never have taken an assistant gig. Especially with a team they once left when they were at a higher level. IMO that shows a lot of character.

Really glad Hue is back.....It strikes me as odd, they hired him on Defense, as he has pretty much been an Offensive Coach both in the NFL and College...be it QB's, WR's O-Coordinator....Doesn't really matter though, BECAUSE, a Good Coach is a Good Coach. Players love Hue, and will work for him......Again, GREAT addition.

I think we all know hue will be in the meetings helping zimmer with his gameplan since he knows offense

Excellent move .... and a ready fit to step up if Zimmer moves on after next season.......or maybe even if Marvin goes.

I was thinking that too but even more about prepping for Jay Gruden's eventual departure. And I'm glad he didn't end up elsewhere in the division.

And that first handshake and meeting between MB and Hue would be fun to watch.

Seems curious to me that Hue would take such a job. Makes me think that he's here to eventually take over for someone, possibly Marvin. Perhaps he and MB already have an idea of where they're heading after the 2012 season
