So why did we get rid of Justin smith again? The guy is kicking butt in the Bay!! Three time pro bowler now!!

Joseph was another good player that we let slip away!!

I know why we got rid of Dillon but the guy ended up with a super bowl ring!!

85 is still amazed how the Pats do business. He stated that Brady is more of an animal in the post season preparation. He’s never seen players so focused and determine to play well and win. Makes you wonder what our coaches expect from our players during practice and games now.

So, who else got away from us and did well for another team?

Justin Smith is playing awsome right now. He was always a huge motor guy, and still is. He could just never seem to get sacks when he was here, but im happy he is doing so well.

Ahmad Brooks also seems to be pretty solid after he left here, he really never got that shot here though. He might be better in the 3-4 defense. Same with Smith, makes me wonder why they never went with the 3-4 looks like there were guys here to start it.

i dont know why bengals get rid of justin smith, but i remember that you all members of this site hate him and cant wait until bengals get rid of him, while i was only one who want him to stay.

Dimster, indeed, a lot of us liked Justin.

But Dimster is also correct that a sizeable contingent on here hated him. I believe it was "Bustin Smith" that was the message board taunt. I am kinda curious as to who that contingent was, but don't remember for certain. Any of them want to own up to it? I think TJ was one that thought he was a bust.

You werent the only one that wanted to keep him, he was a solid DL on a team that had very few solid defensive players. He has blown up in the past 4 years to reach the potential he had when drafted.

I stated for many years that they had been using Justin Smith improperly. Perhaps, it was the scheme and the players around him?

No, if you want to talk about Robert Geathers, then I would be on the side saying that he is 3 years or so past where I think he has played well.

I think lebeau was heading that way but Marvin is a 4-3 guy. I doubt he will switch if he's still here.

Was Marvins defense in 2000 with the ravens a 4-3 or a 3-4?? I always thought he was a 3-4 guy, before he got here.

I do recall being happy with the comp pick we got for him, yes......

He clearly has done much, much better in in San Fran (although I see to recall he had a very good rookie year?), but I can't say for sure if it is about scheme suiting him better there, or if he simply tries harder now that he is out of Siberia. Maybe some of both. Yeah, I was glad to see him gone.

I think he's almost the exact same guy there, but with a better core around him his abilities are better recognized. He kicks inside more often there than he did here, but we all knew about his versatility before he left.

As a Bengal, many people were way too obsessed with his sack totals (terrible to assess a DE by that, frankly) and they swore up and down that nearly ALL of his tackles in the running game came more than 5 yards downfield. Rubbish.

yeah that is what happen that get me pissed off that time before we lost him. everybody was obsessed with those 2 things u say.

here is funny part. not counting his last year at bengals his average for sacks per year is almost 7, while for 49ers his average is low 7, wow what a big change.

for his tackle average 66 tackles at bengals while 64 tackles as 49ers.

yes u guys are right he is alot better as 49ers. lol i dont see it, he is same at both, only different is morons vote him all time for pro bowl as 49ers and never at bengals.

Tackles and sacks are two measurables, but they are not the ONLY measurables, Dimster

He _is_ doing better there. Period.

show me the info that back up what u say? i already show mine.

if he doing better there mean, he react faster to plays? that should equal more tackles or sacks, he move faster? that should equal in more tackles or sacks, so what is he DOING BETTER in??

only thing i can think of on what he doing better is look prettier in 49ers uniform that people start love him and vote for him on pro bowl

Justin Smith is a different player in a different scheme playing a different position. He added weight, is playing in a 3-4. He's more disruptive and effective playing for the 49ers and deserving of a Pro Bowl spot. He was good here, he's better there. I'm fine with it. We're seeing the same thing with some of the guys we added.

Brandon Johnson, Manny Lawson, Brian Leonard, Reggie Nelson, Mike Nugent, Cedric Benson, Chris Crocker, Thomas Howard.

One could argue that all of these players are playing, or have played, at a higher to alot higher level than they were with the teams they came from. It happens to every team. It's no big deal.

All smith did when he was here was bullrush he had no other moves maybe that was scheme maybe it wasent. Iirc he went in FA because the bengals didn't want to pay him big bucks and felt that geathers was a good enough replacement guess we lucked out on that one

Given that you appear to be the lone voice saying he did as well or better in Cincy as he is doing in San Fran, I don't feel the need to do so

It is manifest to the rest of us

That comp pick was used on Chase Coffman.

The Bengals got screwed.

Perhaps I phrased that badly - I was happy we got a 3, which is the best a team can do in the comp picks game

IMO it was coaching. Smith actually seemed to get less effective as the years wore on. He also showed more moves early on than he did later. Basically his primary job here was to go out, defend the run (which he did well) and play 98% of defensive snaps. 9ers coaches have put his skills to a different use.
