How did Ced avoid suspension

No one got suspended... because they weren't employees of the NFL during the lockout. They weren't getting paid, they weren't allowed to show up to work, and their benefits were cut off. Ced wasn't an employee. He was merely an American citizen at the time.

Pryor's suspension was for trying to take advantage of the NFL supplemental draft system (supposedly).

If any of those who got in trouble during the lockout find themselves in trouble again, I'm guessing they'll get double.

It is unclear to everyone involved whether the Commissioner can punish players for violations that occurred during the lockout. The union says the players can't be punished because their contracts were not in effect. It is not an issue that has been decided.

I don't usually side with the players. I also hate when people try to minimize the behavior of wealthy thugs who are in a state of perpetual adolescence. But I agree with the union.

The NFL shouldn't be able to discipline non-employees.

So it seems an agreement has been reached on the personal conduct policy during the lockout.

8 players that have been deemed "repeat offenders" will be subject to discipline. I'm betting that Pacman and Benson are 2 of the 8. And as Mike Florio points out... they should "Sue everyone" because that is ridiculous.

The beat goes on. The law is what Godell says it is when he decides what it is. The only thing that could save Jones/Benson is to be traded to the Patriots effective immediately.

@chrissadeghi

Agreement has been reached. Benson pleads no contest to assault. Agrees to 20-days in jail and $4,000 fine. He is now being thumbprinted

This is for the bar fight where he hit the guy's fist with his face.

Follow-up tweet says he'll serve time during the bye week.

Wonder if Goodell will suspend him now?

EDIT: More:

Prosecuting Attorney Corby Holcomb told @statesman that with credit for good behavior, Benson would serve about a week in jail. #bengals

Here's Reedy's write-up:

Key takeaway is that he also resolved the other assault charge (the beat-up-the-guy-at-5-am thing). Charges will be dropped if he stays out of trouble for a year, pays restitution and does some community service.

Yeah, I think a suspension would be bogus, too, Sportees, but with GOD-El and the Bengals you never know.

Well part of the hang up during the lockout was the player's problem with how the Commish handed down suspensions on an arbitrary basis. I think this actually did have some kind of effect because you aren't seeing guys like Talib, Britt, and others get suspended. Now with the lockout over, it will be interesting to see if things change.

Benson already met Godell last year about the assult that he will face jail time for, i dont think he can suspend him from something that he didnt susupend him for already, even though they met.

He was not charged to jail time from the most recent one, and if Godell would suspend him for that, then to me thats bull crap when other guys who did much worse then him go away with no suspension.

We'll see. I thought I heard Goodell was waiting on the judicial system before making a decision on Talib.

The fact that Benson will be serving actual jail time, and then playing in the NFL the next Sunday is not an image Goodell will like very much. Frankly, I'll be a little surprised if Benson doesn't get suspended at least one game.

I do understand that, but the trial he is doing jail time for, Goodell and him already met for last season. I dont understand how he will take back his "non suspention", for that, and all of sudden suspend him from something that he did last year.

The trial for the recent assult, from what im reading he is not spending any jail time for that one??

Guess i just dont understand how Goodell will handle this

Running back Cedric Benson pleaded no contest Monday in Austin, Texas, to assault in a 2010 incident involving an employee in an Austin bar. For the plea, Benson was sentenced to 20 days in jail.It was one of two cases Benson resolved in Austin on Monday.

Benson will return to Austin and turn himself in on Oct. 17, which is the day after the Indianapolis game at Paul Brown Stadium and the start of the bye week. Assistant Travis County Prosecuting Attorney Corby Holcomb told The Austin American-Statesman that with credit for good behavior, Benson would serve about a week in jail.

If the normal schedule applies, Benson would only miss one or two practices and should be back in Cincinnati by Oct. 26, which would be the first major practice in preparation for the Oct. 30 game at Seattle.

Looks like good timing to me. He'll have it done and nothing to deal with starting next week. And this particular timeframe of the pre-season is pretty damn meaningless for a guy like Ced. He likely wouldn't have played much anyway Thursday, he only misses one walk-through, and is back for the regular week Browns prep.

And, in a bonus, with all that's going on in the NFL with last pre-season games and cuts this weekend, it will go largely unnoticed with regard to the talking heads.

The report on the news is that he could get his sentenced reduced to six days with good behavior and that would make he able to practice on Tuesday for the opener. I guess that's what they are banking on.

On a personal note, he really needs to get his s**t together. He obviously has some issues. He's a good player and seems like a decent guy but he is running out of chances.

Not only that, but it also means the story is over and done with, instead of getting dredged up again during the bye week. Props to Ced.

I like him as a player as well, but I'm betting he only has one good year left (as a bell cow type at least). And I'd wager this is his last season as a Bengal.

Cincy intended to replace him with Daniel Thomas in the draft... but the Dolphins traded up to snag him. So I'm betting we see the Bengals draft a Benson replacement next year.
