Roster Cutdown Begins

So, which team signs Jordan, Pittsburgh, Baltimore or Cleveland?

Hi, Jordan, welcome aboard. Glad to have you. Now, have a seat and tell us all about Cincinnati's new offense...

My money's on the Ravens.

I agree that Baltimore would take him in-house and waterboard the whole new offense out of him.

With Leftwich breaking an arm, maybe the Steelers bring him in there for a few week.

I really feel his days in football are over. Regardless of what he knows about the Bengals system I doubt any AFC North team would waste a roster spot on him.

Caldwell did play QB in high school.

so did Fanene. and Fanene is around because of his versatility... he could become the non-throwin' Samoan.

IMO, Bengals will continue to look for a third string QB on waiver wire, along with a CB. They SHOULD look for upgrades at OG and OT on waivers, but I think that they'll just be putting guys that play those positions on the practice squad.

Reedy's first take on the 53 man roster:

OFFENSE

Quarterbacks: Andy Dalton, Bruce Gradkowski

Running backs: Cedric Benson, Bernard Scott, Brian Leonard, Cedric Peerman, Chris Pressley

Tight ends: Jermaine Gresham, Bo Scaife (see note at bottom), Colin Cochart

Receivers: A.J. Green, Jerome Simpson, Jordan Shipley, Andre Caldwell, Quan Cosby, Ryan Whalen.

Offensive line: Tackles – Andrew Whitworth, Andre Smith, Anthony Collins, Dennis Roland; Guards – Nate Livings, Bobbie Williams, Clint Boling, Max Jean-Gilles; Center – Kyle Cook

DEFENSE

Defensive line: Ends – Robert Geathers, Michael Johnson, Carlos Dunlap, Jonathan Fanene, Frostee Rucker; Tackles – Geno Atkins, Domata Peko, Pat Sims, Clinton McDonald

Linebackers: Rey Maualuga, Manny Lawson, Thomas Howard, Brandon Johnson, Dan Skuta, Dontay Moch. Keith Rivers would start season on PUP list.

Secondary: Cornerbacks – Leon Hall, Nate Clements, Morgan Trent, Adam Jones, Jonathan Wade, Rico Murray; Safeties – Chris Crocker, Reggie Nelson, Taylor Mays, Robert Sands

SPECIAL TEAMS

Punter: Kevin Huber

Kicker: Mike Nugent

Long snapper: Clark Harris

BUBBLE WATCH

Last four in: Cochart, Murray, Whalen, Peerman

First four out: TE Chase Coffman, CB Brandon Ghee, WR Andrew Hawkins, LB DeQuin Evans

Note: If Scaife is placed on IR, our projection for the three tight ends would be revised to Gresham, Cochart and Coffman. Head coach Marvin Lewis rebutted a report by the team's web site, which said there was a fear that Scaife could possibly be done for the season, by saying that Scaife is still seeing specialists about his shoulder.

We've heard that song and dance from Marvin before. With that history, I wouldn't be too confident in Scaife coming back

Yeah "deep bone bruise" means broken bone and a "groin issue" means torn abdominal tendon in Marvin-speak. Scaife's arm is probably fell off and is missing somewhere yet it is but a flesh wound!

It's a shoulder injury?

Well, that's good news, I guess.

After seeing how quickly Scaife went down I assumed he had been shot to death.

1. I agree with Reedy: it looks to me like Cochart blows Coffman off the roster unless Coffman sticks due to Scaife's injury. After watching Coffman last night, I see why Scaife was signed.

2. I agree about keeping the extra RB (Peerman) if can't find a 3rd QB.

3. With Cosby around, you probably need only five WRs. he gives really nice roster flexibility. I don't see keeping Whalen. But Hawkins might make it as a sixth WR who never gets activated. It's good to have a mascot.

4. I agree about keeping only 9 OL. There just aren't 10 guys worth keeping (there aren't even 9 guys worth keeping). I assume that there'll be a waiver pickup or two here. Ditto 2 QBs, although again a no. 3 QB might get picked up after cuts are made.

5. it's a good DL, and somebody good is going to get cut. I know that Geathers is safe, but other than consistent health, I don't really see why.

6. I watched game and can see why we've been trading for help in the secondary. Probably need to keep looking but it's gotten to where they've got a lot of guys that they aren't sure about already so I'm not sure that they'll add yet another guy that they're not sure about. I assume that they'll play with these cards for now.

7. I can see why Dan Skuta isn't listed as being on the bubble. He's solid, and has really come a long way.

8. Miles surely has some big fans on the coaching staff.

This, mostly. I'm on record saying I want the 3rd QB position churned until they find a suitable player to develope, but if that guy isn't already on the roster, and it doesn't seem he is, I'm fine with carrying just two QB's until an upgrade can be signed. Because on many teams, including this one, the 3rd QB is mostly a guy who can get you through a single game. Should both the starter and backup go down for any length of time most teams turn to a street FA like a Kerry Collins rather than playing backups who may have been on the roster for years.

1. Agree. Coffman now qualifies as a bust.

2. Agree. Peerman can return kick-offs (when they are fieldable), so Scott is not exposed to worthless injury.

3. Hawkins won't make it, but your comment is funnny. I don't see Whalen making it either. They could snag a FA WR and go with 6, still. Lots of talent will be on the street Sunday night.

4. I am thinking they need another guard. MJG has blown goats. Where is Kooistra when you need him?

5. I have been down on Geathers since they decided to beef him up to his current, bloated and slow size. He is just not effective. Would rather see Adjenyiu make it.

6. I am much more confirtable with safety now than I was a month ago. Same with CB. PacMan could be back for week 7, so maybe they can hang with Hall, Clements, Jennings, and Trent at CB. Maybe Ghee or Murray can also be kept?

7. Skuta is high effort but he is slow. In the middle he can hide it but outside he is a liability. I am not bagging on him, just calling the spade a spade.

8. Miles can develop. He's a project but a decent ball player. Reminds me of Chris Gamble a bit.

Dan "Bad Motor" Skuta is a bit more than a high effort guy. He's smart and well coached. For just one example consider the play in the Colts game where Dan "JU-87" Skuta forced a fumble by sweeping the ball out of the ball carriers grasp while making the tackle. Or how about the multiple play one man goal line stand, by Dan "Boot" Skuta of course, that may have ultimately failed, but still managed to be my favorite moment(s) of the night?

Quite obviously, this is a man who is making a name for himself.

If you are going to say it, finish it... Dan "Boot" Skuta "Boogie"

Well, now you've ruined it.

Where's the subtlety? Where's the nuance? You've taken all of the mystery out of it. Worse, the reader no longer reads the bon mot and mentally finished the joke themselves, using their own minds, thereby eliminating his or her involvement. Instead of the reader becoming a partner in the jocularity, as I intended, they're now limited to the tired familiar role of being a witness to stupidity.

This, amongst other reasons, is why we suck.

He's a young guy, who though well coached, who is not going to get any faster. He has above average football smarts but his lack of speed is a liability. He does fine against the 2's and 3's, but will be in the dust against starters. He is suited for ST and backing up the linebackers, which is great to have such depth. But please don't label him as a dive bombing linebacker who is on the verge of a breakthrough. He is maxed as he is.

I predicted no breakthrough. Because I too mostly see a core special team player when I consider what to make of Dan "Ju-87" Skuta.

As for the dive bomber inspired label, sorry, I have already dubbed him thusly, and with all modesty I have to confess I'm very very proud of that nickname. In fact, I feel it's so good it will soon become a cultural phenom that sweeps across the world, or the tri-state area at the very least.
