Carson Palmer Thread

Ex-Postie Kevin Goheen, subbing for the temporarily furloughed Joe Reedy, gives us some actual info via Whitworth. God I miss the Post. The Enquirer sucks.

(Have you talked to Carson (who also recently became a father for the third time) about his situation with the Bengals?)

We talk but it’s about the babies and stuff. I really haven’t talked to him about that. We text back and forth checking on the kids and that’s about it.

It’s one of those things where I have my own selfish motives and I’d love to have him back but that’s one of those decisions where Carson wouldn’t speak out unless it was something he was serious about. He’s not the kind of guy to bring this up and just throw it out there as a bargaining tool. He’s serious. It’s one of those deals where I’ll let him have his feelings and I’ve told him that if he ever wants to talk to me about it I’d love to but you have to let him make his own decisions about what is best for him and his family. That’s what you want.

At the end of the day, if he doesn’t want to be here you don’t want a guy that doesn’t want to be here. You want him to do what he is comfortable doing and you want the Brown family to do what they are comfortable with so it’s something I don’t feel everybody else needs to pull and tug on. That’s their own personal decisions and they will need to make them.

(Were you surprised by Carson doing this?)

No, not really. I knew he was really frustrated and knew it had been a tough year for him. It had to be. He took a lot of blame for a lot of things that probably weren’t his (fault) and things that for sure weren’t his fault. That’s the nature of a quarterback but I think in a year in which he was so excited about the potential of our team and for everything to go so badly was tough on him.

Then it didn’t help that there were – and you say Cincinnati fans but the people who do stuff like they did to him aren’t real fans. You’ve got your real fans that will love and support you no matter what but having stuff thrown in his yard and stuff like that, just stuff that is uncalled for. There is stuff like that I’m sure hurt him and put him in a place where he’s not just hurt but worried about his family and people coming to his house. You worry about all that for him but in the end I can feel his frustrations so I wasn’t exactly surprised but I was concerned.

I have a friend that I do not wish to disclose that works for the Bengals organization in the front office. We went to school together in Bellingham and he moved there 6 or 7 years ago I'm not sure. I don't normally get insider info from him because normally they don't concern us at all. But this time it's different.

According to my friend the Bengals and Seahawks have already agreed on a deal that includes this years 2nd rounder and next years first rounder from us for Carlson Palmer. He mentioned that in the contract there is provision for a contract extention of 3 years at the end of the 2011 season. The deal will be around $27 mil for the 4 years or something like that. He doesn't normally joke around and after the time I had with my son this week I don't think he would mess with me. Of course that is a possibility...but not likely.

He says that deal will be official right after the new CBA is signed.

What did Reedy do to deserve that?

Sadly, it appears to have become standard operating procedure in the publishing industry. I was working for a company in NYC that began doing it in the late 1990s, when they discovered they could furlough employees for up to five days a year without triggering any kind of unemployment issues. Usually, they would pull this stunt in the week between Christmas and New Year's so the top execs could avoid paying everyone for a week, hit their numbers with the "savings" and then collect their big annual bonuses. I'll never forget how after the first time they shafted everyone, they followed it up with a memo in early January bragging about how well the company had done the previous year! A**holes.

From his Twitter it looks like Reedy thinks there are unemployment issues. He thinks he can get unemployment benefits for that week

I think the Enquirer now does multiple furloughs each year as a cost cutting measure.

I suppose it is better that everyone take a week or two unpaid leave in place of 4 folks in a hundred getting laid off.

Still sucks, yes, but with newspapers selling fewer printed editions and the website not bringing in enough revenue to offset the lost sales, they have to cut costs somewhere

Could be. I'm sure the labor laws in Ohio are different from what they were back then in New York.

Probably. Maybe it's different for Enquirer folks, but my personal experience with such unpaid "leave" is that you were still expected to work. Basically it was a wink-and-nod type of thing: yeah, your were "off" for a week, but deadlines didn't change. Publishing's not like a factory where everything just shuts down. I never had a "furlough" where I wasn't expected to "take one for the team" and keep working so that things would stay on track.

It's been awhile but I think you aren't eligible for benefits until week two. The employee loses week one of pay with out being able to receive benefits and that's why they are able to do it.
