Andre Smith Sidelined

if I had the money that he has and was truly worried about keeping my weight down, I would have someone cooking all my meals for me, so I wasn't eating freakin' McDonalds everyday and would be very active in the pool to try to get whatever aerobic exercise I could without straining the foot.

Exactly.

He has had all offseason to get fit (as fit is for a huge ORT) and even if his foot has been hurt all this time, he could still have all his strength, weight, and cardiovascular system in line at this point

But he doesn't

It speaks to desire - or rather the lack thereof

He may be done, at least for this year

This comment probably belongs in the Bengals draft history thread but they always seem to go with guys with upside. But as quickly as guys cycle through, I don't think you have time to wait for upside to come to fruition. I would rather see them go with the safer pick like say Michael Oher last year. Smith might end up being the best of his class but he can't get there if he can't get on the field. Again for the money they have to pay, go with a surer thing. Thankfully we are a contender otherwise this would be topic number 1.

They were smart when they made the contract up, man what a waste of talent. This will worry me if he dosnt get on the field much this year. I guess we will soon find out if Roland has changed much with the Dallas game coming up (if they bring blitzes). If not i hope Marvin and co. have enough common sense to bring in a vet to help out.

Simple solution: Tell our skin zeppelin that his foot needs a little surgery. Put him under with the 5 tanks of sodium whatever it takes to knock out a cape buffalo.

Then just go ahead and do a stomack resection, or a lap band, or whatever doctors do to these poor devils who can't stop eating no matter what they do. It worked for John Daly, it'll work for Andre.

I think one of these surgeries might be his only hope for ever having a career in the NFL.

LOL LOL only problem is with his luck his weight will probably go down to 200 pounds then become a WR.

Say what you want about the Bengals and their holdout history but I think hindsight shows us that they made the right call in forcing this deal on Smith. This wasn't a deal he'd accept w/o a long holdout but there were questions about his conditioning and motivation and I think the Bengals were sharp to get these clauses in the contract

http://cincinnati.com/blogs/bengals/2010/08/01/smith-does-some-work/

An hour before the start of practice and before fans started filtering into the complex, Dermontti Dawson was working with Andre Smith to see how Smith’s left foot would respond to basic line drills. Smith is learning from one of the best in Dawson, a two-time Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist who is serving as a coaching intern this year.

“He seems to be doing well,” said Dawson of Smith. “Since he’s been out of practice for awhile we did a little drive block, angle block, pass protection and put a little stress on his foot and see how it feels. He knows his assignments. It’s just about gaining confidence.”

Sunday marked the first day that Dawson did drills with Smith and it is something that they will continue to do daily.

“We’re not forcing a lot of pressure on (the foot) right now,” Dawson said. “Gradually we’ll put more stress on the foot and see how it feels.”

As for the reports that Smith weighs 370, he doesn’t look to be under 350. Remember, he gets docked half his game check if he is over 350 and is not on the 45-man game day roster.

Marvin Lewis said last Thursday that Smith will be out 2-3 weeks and that they are hoping he can get some reps during the preseason. But he also could end up on the PUP list and miss the first six games if the foot does not respond.

So we go from Smith not being able to do anything for more than a few seconds at a time to running blocking and pass protection drills ??

I'll remain hopeful.

People also seem to forget that Coffman came off of his surgery prior to being drafted and was a non factor last season as well. Smith had his surgery in February, so if he's back for the start of the season, I would be very happy. If he lands on the PUP, I actually wouldn't be surprised.

I guess Andre is now doing 3 a days to get his weight down, and helping his foot. I guess the trainers have been pretty impressed with him thus far and are happy with where he is. Um i guess that some kind of encourging news???? I just hope he soon comes off the pup and is able to help

Sounds like they are optimistic that he'll get to play in a couple of the preseason games this season. That doesn't sound like a guy that is going to be on the PUP list at the beginning of the season. Good news.

It also does not sound like a guy ready to go to NE and start, either.

For all the bashing Roland seems to get, at least the guy is in shape and ready to keep working on his game. If it were not for Roland, this team would be force-fitting Collins at RT, or rushing to get Fat Andre on the field.

It is really about as unprofessional as could be for Smith to show up so out of shape he gets the Jeremi "I-can't-believe-I-ate-the-whole-thing" Johnson treatment.

FFS, fat Andre should have gotten to work, running in a pool, riding the indoor bike, and eating proper since his Spring surgery...

Did he? F no, he fudged it straight up. What a waste.

If he does not start by week 6, I will be rolling out the BUST title for him.

For those who are interested there are several photos of Andre Smith posted on the official sites message board. He's massive, but IMHO doesn't look any different today than on the day he was drafted.

Yeah, and at least he hasn't pulled a Kory Stringer... So, we've got that.

One year and many millions of dollars later, and several other draft options forgone, he is still a massive slab of walking whale blubber encasing what could (should) be the Bengals starting RT?

Great. Overjoyed.

Edit: It just occurred to me reading the above posts that SoP can keep half of Fat Andre's game checks if he is over 350 and not on the 45 man active roster...

As long as that foot hurts, I could see SoP springing for the dozen or so Graters Turtle Sundaes it is taking each day to keep Andre in his whale suit. It is just simple economics to SoP. Should have filed this under the "SoP is SO cheap" thread.

Wow...Yeah Stringer has huge, but to basically say "at least Andre didn't suffer a heat stroke and die on the practice field" That's cold man. Real cold.

Well, at least we know Andre Smith has a sense of humor......Why else would a man who reportedly weighs 370lbs be wearing Cross-Training/Running shoes? Notice the "Brand New" appearance of them....Obviously never used.

t also does not sound like a guy ready to go to NE and start, either.

We shall see because 2 preseason games may as well be 4 :o I'm sure he'll get plenty of play time see if he'd be a upgrade over Roland,

Which shouldn't take much...

I agree with you. If he plays in the last two preseason games, he's starting vs NE. Reports are that he's 365-370 lbs now. He can easily lose 20 lbs in over a month. That's less than 5% of body weight while working under professional supervision. If he's under 350 he'll play.

I know it is cold. It is irony. My point being that Kory Stringer died from "overdoing it", something that Fat Andre has no concept of unless it is covered in powdered sugar.
