The Bengals shaved their roster to 82 players Monday when they released guard

Jason Shirley in the “waived/non-football injury” category.

Shirley, a fifth-round pick out of Fresno State in 2008, suffered what is usually a season-ending injury when he tore his Achilles in April while playing in a charity basketball game with other Bengals.

If Shirley clears waivers Tuesday, he’ll revert to the Bengals’ Reserve/Non-Football Injury list. That means he can’t play this season for the Bengals, but he could for another team if they signed him and he was healthy.

The 6-5, 338-pound Shirley was drafted as a defensive tackle, where he played three games as a rookie with four tackles. He was switched to the offensive line in the first week of last year’s training camp and spent all last season on the practice squad after playing the four preseason games at backup guard.

The Bengals must start training camp next week with just 80 players under contract. If they ink all six remaining unsigned draft picks before the first practice on July 29, they have to cut two others.

I just hope the Bengals don't regret this.

For instance, by like week 3 they could find themselves saying, "Man, we can't let this opponent have a moments peace on the can. Do we have anyone on the roster that can, oh, say, maybe back their car through the wall of this opponent's house, smash into the bathroom and knock the guy right off the toilet? Anyone?"

Then they'll remember that Jason Shirley had that gimmick down pat, and they'll be sorry they ever cut him.

And here you go...

As expected, no one claimed the contract of Bengals offensive lineman Jason "I Am Serious, And Don't Call Me" Shirley, who recently was waived with the designation "non-football injury."

Shirley suffered an Achilles' tendon injury while playing basketball in April, and he won't play in 2010.

He has been placed on the non-football injury list. The Bengals have the option to pay his base salary of $395,000. We'd be shocked if the Bengals opted to do so.

Shirley remains under contract through 2011. He joined the team via round five of the 2008 draft.

TOUGH CUT: Hate to see a good man go.

Center Dan Santucci, waived Wednesday to get the roster down to 81 players, never really had a shot because of health reasons.

After the Bengals drafted him in 2007 out of Notre Dame in the seventh round, they cut him at the end of his rookie training camp and when the Colts put him on their practice squad the Bengals plucked him for the active roster when they had some injury problems up front. He ended up playing on special teams in two games and that was it because foot and ankle problems the past two years in the preseason shelved him for both seasons and he was never able to really get into the center derby that yielded Kyle Cook last season.

Cook is clearly the guy here for the long haul. But you hope Santucci gets a shot somewhere. He’s a solid, smart Chicago guy who bought into the program and was good with the guys. He started his family here in Cincinnati with a baby last year and you’ve got to like any guy that won the Knute Rockne Student Athlete Award when he was a senior.

The move certainly indicates that the Bengals are doing what they can to make sure they have both kickers in camp, per Lewis’ comments earlier in the week. They need to cut one more guy to get to the minimum of 80 for Thursday’s first practice. The secondary would seem to be the most likely target because the Bengals are so heavy there, but it could be anywhere at this point.

Nice merge for what will surely be more roster moves !!!

Thanks. I thought Santucci deserved another 15 seconds of fame since his thread got completely derailed and locked down tight.

Seriously there will be a ton of discussion and activity over the next month so I figured we should put it all in one place. We'll see how long it lasts.

Derailed?

I ask you, what would you have done if you were the one who discovered a YouTube search really does link to an actual Japanese sitcom named "Joe Pong".

At some point you'd have to write about it, wouldn't you?

And what better time than immediately after Joe pops up with another one of his trademarked "You're always wrong--I'm always right" offerings?

Anyways, let's get back on thread.

The subject is.....bottom dwellers.

Or if you prefer...dead men who are no longer walking.

Per Joe Reedy's blog, Rashad Jeanty was placed on the PUP list today. I'm wondering if that is in advance of the TO signing to put them at 80?

wasn't nelson,Andre & hall also on pup so don't think they'd have to put jeanty on it just make a spot for T.O...

It's unrelated to TO. Its the training camp PUP, anyone on it is already on the roster.

I wasn't sure but I felt the timing was a little odd since the roster has been around 80, so I thought the move might have been related. Thanks.
