Sea Ray
OK, let's talk about Chad. He was instrumental in winning this title clinching game yesterday. He is Carson's only reliable target. He's shut up about his contract and played football this year. Of course he's still Chad and a clown but "he's our clown."I can't say for certain, but my gut tells me that Chad was told in the off season that if he wants his contract renegotiated then just shut up, play and Mike Brown will talk to you after the season.Regardless, I'm sure Chad still has a new contract in the back of his mind. This issue hasn't gone away.So if you're Mike Brown, do you throw him a few extra bucks even though he's still under contract? I say yes but I don't throw him the moon. I thank him for his service, throw him a few million and announce a contract at a press conference in March that "Chad has signed a contract that will make him a Bengal for Life." If Chad insists on being paid like Larry Fitzgerald or Randy Moss then I tell him to beat it and remind him that he already has a contract. Again the question I'm throwing out there, do you go to the table and talk contract with Chad or do you tell him "no, we already have you under contract"? Ickey44
No. His current deal has him locked up until he's 34. Most receivers aren't productive after that. Let him play it out. If he's still a good receiver then, then give him a one or two year contract for what he's worth and not what he thinks he's worth. Chad made a butt load of money last year and didn't do a damn thing to earn it so he has no right to demand or even get a new contract. Sea Ray
Good points Ron. I'm not interested in extending his years either however I might with no cap hit thus no risk to the team. Depends on how this new contract is written. Let's say he's making $3mill a year now, I'd raise it to $4.5 and no signing bonus.
walzav29
No. Give the money to Zimmer.
Ickey44
He's making like 6 or 7 a year. I think's he's getting paid well enough.
gregstephens
I agree with this line of thought. This isn't a 'Fredo' bashing. He's done as much as I'd expect him to this year. He's shut up. He's blocking better, not popping off on the sidelines. Great effort. Still can burn almost any corner in the league. I have no problem with Fredo's performance to date. That said, this team, incredibily, needs to now focus on building its offense of the future. I've seen the talk on other threads of pursuing Bolden. Won't happen, but I like the spirit of the discussion. In the next year, the Bengals need to add two, minimum, young stud receivers--one to replace Coles, who I like, but has been a disappointment and is getting older--and one to fill the Chris Henry gap. Then you have to factor in the Fredo aging reality. I'd rather spend the cash on building the young future and not throw it at a receiver that, as Ron points out, will be mid-thirties when his contract runs out. Also don't forget this off-season, the team will have to focus heavily on the tight end situation. I like Foschi, just not convinced he's the answer. Coffman will never pan out, for whatever reason. Dark horse, the team may even be looking at acquiring the QB of the future. I'm not screaming get rid of Palmer, and maybe the issues can be solved by rebuilding the receiver corps, but I'm not sure anyone is so confident in Palmer at this point that the question is beyond discussion. In short, no new deal for Fredo. If he wants to resign at 34 for less money and be a second or even slot receiver, fine. I wouldn't hand him the keys to the bank though. Sea Ray
He's making like 6 or 7 a year. I think's he's getting paid well enough.I see your point and if you pro rate his signing bonus I think you're about right but these contracts aren't that simple. Actually he's only making $4.5mill this year after making $3mill last yearThe base salaries for the balance of the deal are as follows: $3 million (for 2008), $4.5 million (2009), $5 million (2010) and $6 million (2011). There are workout bonuses of $250,000 in each of those seasons. If the Bengals do not exercise the option for the 2011 campaign, they must make Johnson a non-exercise payment of $3.5 million./>http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2415464If they renegotiate I make him drop that "non exercise payment" clause. kingwilly
No new money for Chad. His biggest complaint had been them not improving the D. Tell Chad the money they WOULD have paid him is now going toward Julius Peppers. That will shut his mouth. He is earning over what he truly brings right now, in this offense.Using money to make a run at Boldin or Marshall should be the priority. As well, cutting Bobbie and Geathers will let us go after a guy like Peppers or Kampmann. With the current renditon of this team, there is a 2-3 year window to stay on top. Spend the $ to keep improving and tit could go for 4 or 5 years.
COB
Buy him a tiara. He can put it on after every touchdown, Mike Brown springs for a dozen roses every Sunday, and Chad can parade up and down the sidelines like the prom queen every time he scores. Whatever they do, they better not extend him. I personally think he'll be a very good late-age receiver just based on the way he conditions himself and the way he plays. So far his deterioration has been very gradual. But he does have a bit of a kamikaze style when going for high balls, and I fear a shoulder or neck injury could slow him down a lot later. 34 is good, then get him reasonably or fit him for a redskins uni. Redskins maybe, too. But I'm going to say definitely Raiders.
BengalsMan3203
I think... I believe... Chad and Carson will both retire wearing only one jersey. Since they've already worn the Tiger Stripes they won't put on another jersey. Chad is here till he can't play again.
HairOnFire
Another contract extension for Chad? Sure. But only if his new team wants to give him one after the trade.
ShulaSteakhouse
No way. Let Dallas or Washington over-pay him for his last few years.

Not confident in Palmer? The guy wont put up another 4,000 yds this year, but he is at 3,094 with 21 TD's and only 12 Int's. Keep in mind that he only has 1 receiving threat, and an O-Line that looks like its built more to run-block, than pass-protect. Most of all, this team would be NOTHING this year without Palmer and his late game Heroics, 90 yard drives, game winning TD's, etc. Even if this Defense was #1 instead of #4, this team would not win more 4 games without him. So to me, yes this question should not be discussed. He is the only Leader this team has....Offense or Defense.
