HoosierCat
From P. King's MMQB column today:I think this is the most interesting thing, apropos of nothing, that I found out about football this week that I never knew before: In 1989, Tony Dungy was an unemployed coach, having left the Steelers coaching staff. He thought he was going to catch on with the Cincinnati Bengals, working under Sam Wyche as the defensive line coach, but GM Mike Brown was uncomfortable hiring a guy to coach the line who'd never done it before.Sigh... Pidge
If only Mikey had hired him, we'd have won at least 19 SBs by now.
HoosierCat
If only Mikey had hired him, we'd have won at least 19 SBs by now.Or at least avoided Dave Shula. Of course, that means "Shula Steakhouse" would now be named "Tony's Halfway House for Wayward NFL Ex-Cons" or something like that...

Tony and SoP. They could call their scouting dept. "Missionaries".It warms the heart.
DC_Bengals_Fan
If only Mikey had hired him, we'd have won at least 19 SBs by now.Or at least avoided Dave Shula.Looked at another way, that probably avoided ruining Tony Dungy's career. For all we know, Dave Shula could have had 2 SB rings by now for some other team. Just like Akili Smith could have been an All-pro.Or maybe not. walzav29
Dungy is very over rated. Wyche drafted the guts of the Tampa Bay team. He couldn't win a Super Bowl there, and he only got to 1 with Peyton Manning. He's above average, but he's not part of the holy sacred team of coaches.LombardiGibbsParcellsBelichekWalshLandryPaul Brown

Hoosier, don't you remember? We actually discussed this one back in the day. Specifically, I wrote about how Cincinnati was increasingly unable to attract proven head coaching candidates, and might be well served to be amongst the first wave of franchises hiring black head coaches. The two names I pimped hardest were Tony Dungy, then unproven but said to be very smart and of outstanding character, and Ted Cottrell, then highly respected for his history of developing defenses, but now known to be one of the worst "interviews" in the history of job searches. HoosierCat
Hoosier, don't you remember? We actually discussed this one back in the day.I honestly don't recall, but I believe you. As you say, it made sense as a strategy, given the difficulty of attracting proven coaching talent. blueridge
So what? Tony Dungy didn't coach the DL. "Oh god, if only Tony Dungy had coached the Bengals' D-line 20 years ago everything would have been different." The great Paul Brown passed over Bill Walsh for Tiger Johnson. Complain about that. He didn't do badly, but certainly never came close to the kind of success he had in Cleveland.

No denying that he was a great coach at his peak and a trendsetter and innovator for the entire game itself. Why Tiger Johnson though? Poop! Fastest expansion team to get to the Playoffs? The Bengals, coached by Paul Brown. This was before teams were given the keys to the kingdom they get nowadays. And I'm sure both of those teams and the Browns and Texans would agree they were handed no kingdom. That said, the Bengals were screwed their first year as far as trying to get players from existing teams and what Paul managed to do with this team is just short of amazing.
