I am laughing and crying. Oh what it means to be a Bengals fan. Easy to root for a winning team. Harder to root for a team that has things like this happen. I guess good franchises don't put themselves into a position where they absolutely have to depend on a rookie. They have the luxury of developing them. I hope Collins can handle the regular season pressure. And lets all hope there are no more injuries.

Problem is that playing OT isn't one of those things you can learn from a book (I'm guessing, anyway, since I'm about half the weight of your average LT). So he comes back at week 5, and it takes him another 5 weeks to play himself into shape and really get the hang of the playbook.

The Bengals have never really said what their plans for starting Smith were, so it's a little bit difficult to speculate about how much of a setback the foot injury will be. But Hokie was right, up to a point, about Smith being able to "absorb the system" while recovering. Because it isn't just conditioning drills and practice reps he's been missing during his holdout. Rather, he's missed coaches sessions on the playbook, film study, and individual coaching, some of which is still possible.

Still, it's hard to imagine a scenario that more perfectly demonstrates why the Bengals are so adamant about contract provisions that only serve to lessen the long-term damage that occurs when players bust.

Damn good thing they were not counting on him.

It will be like having an extra first round pick in 2010, which is when he will be fully able to contribute, it looks like.

Yeah, but you cant play that way. Keith Rivers was like an extra first round pick this year due to him missing the last half of his rookie year. Now Andre will be like another first rounder next year? Obviously you want first rounders to play immediately.

I also have my concerns about a 6'4" 350lb player with foot injuries. I was hoping Andre Smith could be another Willie Anderson......just not the Willie Anderson late in his career with foot problems.

Foot problems? He has gotten one foot injury taking him out 7-10 days? hardly a sign like levis & monroes bad knees.

I'm hearing 7-10 days, and I'm hearing up to a few weeks. Its a stress fracture that wont require surgery, meaning it will heal on its own, and can you honestly tell me how quick he will heal? Its a wait and see type of thing.....I VERY Seriously doubt he will be back in a week and a half, or less.

BTW hurt in non-contact drill.....hmmm

NFL Network now reporting it's a "stress fracture" and will keep him from practicing for "7-10 days."

I can't believe I'm typing this, but that almost sounds like good news.

Was that the way they were spinning it?

This is the bengals here 7-10 days equals 2 months here lol. I do hope though its only 7-10 days that would be just perfect. The guy on NFL Network reported it wasnt as bad as people are saying, so whatever that means.

The latest nugget from NFL.com

Bengals rookie Smith out two weeks with broken foot

Posted: September 1st, 2009 Bengals rookie OT Andre Smith is expected to miss two weeks with a stress fracture in his left foot, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The stress fracture, which Smith suffered Tuesday, likely will keep him off the field for seven to 10 days, and then he is scheduled to resume normal work.

Smith, a first-round draft pick who just signed a contract with the Bengals, had drawn concerns about his conditioning even before his holdout, so getting him in game shape was going to take time.

Smith's injury is very similar to the stress fracture suffered by Broncos RB LaMont Jordan, who rested his foot for a week and then returned to practice. But Smith carries considerably more weight as a tackle, so his recovery could take a little longer.

I broke my foot this summer....depending on the fracture it heals fairly quickly. As a matter of fact I was able to walk on it and still wear a shoe/runing shoe. However paid does still arise where the fracture took place and the possiblility for the foot to fracture again is still possible. According to my doctor, he said since we use the foot almost all the time, other than putting it in a cast and not walking or running on it for 6 to 8 weeks (which wasn't an option) I could possibly reinjure the foot sometime down the road. As for Andre, I am not a big dude like he is and having to move side to side or back and forth like he does. It really doesn't look like he takes care of himself so the critic in me says that this might be the start of more problems for this fellow.

I wouldn't have drafted this clown in the first place. But since the Bengals did, I wouldn't have signed him. The Bengals are now paying money for the same guy who was sitting at home last week, not getting paid.

I have the same chance of doing that by playing the lottery tonight. I better go get my ticket!

I knew you would find a way to spin this into a "look how clever Mike and Katie are" comment.

Just like I knew this would happen and got blasted for it too, as usual.

At least he will be back in 10 days. Anybody want to put the over/under on when he will be "injured" next, or is that being to "negative."

Lowball a rookie and watch him non-achieve.

Mike Brown certainly knows how to nerf a franchise, admit it.

That's the way I want to believe it.

It does feel like "here we go again" but how much impact was this guy going to have in the first 4-6 weeks? He won't be physically practicing but will be absorbing the system while rehabbing. If he's out 6 weeks, he's available in week 4 or 5. At least it's not a knee injury.

It feels like we are cursed but it could be worse. "It is what it is".

He needs the next 6 weeks to get in shape. With a foot fracture, he will not be getting off the sofa.

This set-back is serious, even if the injury is not.

Yep. 3 months to really get into shape I think. Maybe 2 months to get out there if it's going to hell in a handbasket again on the O-line. Still, it should give the fat f**k plenty of time to have learnt the playbook from cover to fricking cover. Earn your effing money bitch-tits, do that much at least.

In reality, he's a rookie tackle so next yr was the earliest we'd see the best from him anyway. I'm slightly annoyed, if you hadn't guessed, but meh in the bigger picture.

I'd be a little careful with this. Stress fractures in large people can be bad. It might have worked OK for Lamont Jordan, but then Lamont Jordan is about the size of an appetizer for Andre Smith.

In the end, if it came down to missing him for an extra week vs. screwing up his foot, I'd be careful.

Yeah, now that you mention it I wonder what the humidity level was?

Humidity level 35%

Dew Point 45 degrees

wind 2.0 mph from the NW

wind gust up to 2.0 mph

and yes, all of these along with the planets alignment factor into the injury.

How's that for sarcasm? :P

You were doing good until you actually said it's sarcasm. For sarcasm to work, you don't announce that it's......sarcasm.

I'm amazed when I read the comments on this topic.

The Bengals draft a guy with highly suspect conditioning and weight issues, then refuse to pay him what the rest of the league is willing to pay their draft picks in order to get them in on time (and consequently get/stay in shape), then COINCIDENTLY this out-of-shape, overweight player breaks his foot two days after signing IN A NON-CONTACT DRILL.

The posters on this board then proceed to say things beyond reason that suggest that this is actually a good thing. After reading these posts, I am now convinced that we should have all of our draft picks sit out an entire year to learn the playbook, and then it will be like having extra picks next year. What a great strategy.

We have all obviously become BENGALIZED.
