jonahdsage
Andre Smith fractured his foot in practice today and is out for "a few week" per the dot comI'm glad we got him in to camp on time owait...a couple of positives -- 1.) this seals the deal on him being used for the roster exemption. Could give us some good options (keeping herbert for ST comes to mind)2.) less pressure to force him on the field -- needs time to heal, gives him more time to learn3.) umm . . . our first round offensive tackle who could be a franchise right tackle for the next ten years is hurt his second day of practice in a non-contact drill . . . what? derekshank
Yep. This sounds about right. Leon Hall and Justin Smith have been the only durable 1st round picks in 10 years.
Pidge
I dunno, maybe if he'd come into camp in some kind shape, other than beach ball round, he might not have been injured. I wonder how this effects his weight though. If he can't train and goes over the 350 does he lose the half mill or whatever the figure is when wiegh-ins start or does an injury nix that clause? If it does end up costing him some change he might decide that this is no longer college and he should start acting like a professional.Or it might have happened either way and is just one of those things. mgilgris
We all know the 350 lb weight restriction in his contract is just money in mikey boy's pocket. No way that money is ever used on the team. This team never ceases to amaze.

membengal
Damn good thing they were not counting on him.It will be like having an extra first round pick in 2010, which is when he will be fully able to contribute, it looks like. Stripes
Paul Alexander recently talked about the benefits of having extra time to focus individually on Andre. Now that he'll be sidelined well into the regular season, that's out the window. He'll do nothing all year, clearly.

cincyhokie
It does feel like "here we go again" but how much impact was this guy going to have in the first 4-6 weeks? He won't be physically practicing but will be absorbing the system while rehabbing. If he's out 6 weeks, he's available in week 4 or 5. At least it's not a knee injury. It feels like we are cursed but it could be worse. "It is what it is".
cincyhokie
Like a bad joke or something.Well, Collins and Roland better have their game ready.True. Also makes you wonder if the Bengals won't get a servicable O-lineman after the major cutdowns. Smith won't be adding to the roster so we can add depth in other areas if need be as well. DC_Bengals_Fan
It does feel like "here we go again" but how much impact was this guy going to have in the first 4-6 weeks? He won't be physically practicing but will be absorbing the system while rehabbing. If he's out 6 weeks, he's available in week 4 or 5. At least it's not a knee injury. Problem is that playing OT isn't one of those things you can learn from a book (I'm guessing, anyway, since I'm about half the weight of your average LT). So he comes back at week 5, and it takes him another 5 weeks to play himself into shape and really get the hang of the playbook. At that point, it's week 10 and they're in the position of deciding what to do with him. If the season's going well and Collins is pulling his weight, there's no way they screw with it. If they start doing much with Andre that late in the season, it means it's probably already over OR there's an injury on the O-line.Hate to be cynical, but I don't see him doing much more than spot duty in goal line late in the year. Kazkal
Report: Andre Smith to miss only 7-10 daysPosted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 1, 2009 6:38 PM ETBengals rookie tackle Andre Smith reportedly broke his foot at practice Tuesday, but not all breaks are created equal.NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports that Smith will be off the field for only 7-10 days, and should be fully back in the mix within two weeks.Smith reportedly suffered a stress fracture in his left foot, according to La Canfora's sources. It sounds like Smith's status for Week One is still in serious doubt, but the Bengals have avoided a major injury.Smith's injury is reportedly similar to one suffered by Broncos running back LaMont Jordan, who missed a week of practice. Of course, Smith will have to prove when he returns that he can last more than two days without getting hurt again.Well atleast he won't miss that much but still sucks he won't get any reps before the season starts :| Justin would missed more time with his holdout and was still able start 11 games. He'll be learning as much as he can while re-habbing his foot. I can see him contributing in mid-season as opposed to week 4. It sucks and it is a set back but the real damage was done when he wasn't in camp on time. The first 5 weeks will shape this season and Smith wasn't possibly going to contribute much in those weeks even before the injury.
